Decided to watch the game again last night after being there live.
Few things I noticed again
Overall we were the better team the entire night. There was a period we went 1 goal 9 behinds, the rate of inside 50s didn’t change … we just started missing, our inaccuracy is bad and if you’re an opposition supporter or whatever you’re going to sense a mental fragility from it. But even if that was 4.6 it would’ve been dead and buried.
You could say that with Payne off, they got slightly more contested and uncontested marks up in the wing inside 50m but that’s the only change.

Next hippy. I like Hipwood and I stand up for him when my mates criticise him but even I couldn’t make any excuses for Saturday night.
His ball use was pathetic and he stopped our chains multiple times. Usually leading to a turnover and Carlton inside 50m and score. When he got the ball I reckon I counted 4 unpressured clangers that resulted in Carlton scores. Not saying we drop him or anything …. Just my observation of the game. Unsure what to do with him and at this point of the finals what can you do ?

Joey was great defensively! Bailey actually played well. Good to see Ashcroft again just play quality football.
I think if we can just sort out the misses patch. Then we are complete. Banking on Payne playing.
Hippy has to be playing injured, he was in terrific form in the middle of the season kicking 6 and 5 goals hauls v Port and Bulldogs in a 2 out of 3 game stretch, looked to have really "arrived". We have no one else who can play in his stead though.

Since he has got into the groove post his ACL Ashcroft looks a more damaging player by foot, must have worked on it during rehab, before I thought his kicking while quite good was not damaging, IMO he will continue to improve this facet of his game.

Agree, I thought Bailey was good live on the night.

Payne, scans today 🤞 🤞

Hipwood had a shocker for clangers but it didn't really matter did it. He'll know. So injured or not I'm not expecting anything similar this week.

Re our inaccuracy it's just something infectious that seems to run through the lot of them from time to time. It's mental . If we get into a situation in the next week or two where we actually need to nail them to win games then I guess it'll be called mental fragility if we start missing.

I'm wondering whether Fages saying Payne could've come back on and that he could be right for this week was just a mental ploy to downplay the injury in case we decide to play him.

I watched the first half again yesterday and was watching Hippy. It was weird he didnt look like he had an issue with the distance on his kicks which I usually see as a lower injury not letting you connect properly. So he was connecting ok but half the time I had no idea where he was trying to kick to. His radar seemed more off than anything.

He did also have at least one or two moments where he didnt seem able to bend to pick the ball up properly though. He definitely wasnt 100% right though.

Also it so clear when our forwards put the defensive effort in, we play so much better. Seeing Daniher and Charlie put in multiple chases and intercepts was massive. Actually seeing Daniher run past his man to intercept the ball in the middle for one of our early goals was massive. It wasnt just his last minute tackle, he did it all game

Payne was definitely ready to come back on, I was sitting above the interchange bench, he was in the interchange area with his knee strapped looking like he was going to be interchanged on.

I thought he was lacking some depth on his kicks. A few of his turnovers were from kicks where he was trying to kick over an opponent and just couldn't get there. The most telling one for me though, highlighting that he's struggling in this area, was his failure to make the distance from that shot from around 50m pretty much from in front. He may not necessarily always be accurate, but you'd trust him to make the distance from there if he was fully fit.

We don't have any other options though, and FWIW even though his kicking was below average on Saturday night, I thought he was still running & competing OK, carrying what I can only assume would be a pretty painful injury.

Even if we don’t make the GF, it’s the reason why I want two non-Victorian teams to make it. The VIC media, with the exception of Sydney at the minute, can’t stand the interstates and I’ve already heard on SEN VIC this morning the clear desire for a Geelong v Hawthorn GF because that hasn’t been done before.
How old are they ?

Geelong and Hawthorn played on of the greatest GF's of all time in 1989 . And again in 2008.

Massive shoutout to Starcevich for mine.

We know he's slightly tailed off the past couple of years, but since his return after that calf, he's been absolutely rock solid, and for mine, has added some clean and attacking disposal into the mix too. Love when the ball goes near him at the moment - you just know he'll make the right decision. It's just about career best form - let's hope it continues.

Seems to be better giving us an attacking option when he doesn't have a strong opponent

Hopefully he towels up Toby again

I love him.

Right mix of aggression ,judgement and skill.

He's getting better, imo on the cusp of an A Grader.

Made the mistake of watching that and they really don’t rate us at all .

Hopefully we prove them wrong and hopefully it’s a non Victorian GF .

That would really upset the pro Vic media .
I'm comfortable with commentators not rating us, and given the season we've had it's not unfair. It's up to our boys to prove them wrong, and we've seen our boys seem to like having a challenge.

Will Ashcroft is going to be incredibly good in his prime. We have another Lachie Neale in terms of drive and commitment to consistently improving and adding more strings to their bow.

Guys like Neale & Will are on a different level in terms of their professionalism to being the best athletes they possibly can.

And we're getting a second one in this draft !

Let's hope so.

Really liked Starcevich's game again. He's a key player for us.

Froggy is just undersized to play on the big dogs but he tried his guts out and made some great saves tonight.

Payne in just allows Harris and these smaller guys more freedom. It was just so apparent in that first quarter how big an influence Payne could be . In fact his foot injury last year probably cost us a flag.
Lester’s come from behind spoil late in the third was SENSATIONAL. The recognition from his teammates was testament to how important that action was. He applies that pressure every week.

Catching up on some footy programs and Sunday Footy Show again demonstrates its biased. Barrett defends Newman and says it’s Lachies fault and Newman just defended himself. No mention or footage of Cripps cheap shit and Lloyd again saying we are the only team that can’t win it. Maybe true but Lloyd just loves getting stuck into us. He’s one of love to stick it up.

Absolutely incredible, man is still harbouring a 23 year grudge. Which is funny because Bucks has clearly moved on to his credit, and he had way more of a reason to hate us.

I dont always agree with Buckley but he comes across as one of the most adjusted of all the former players. Seems to be fairly balanced with minimal bias against various teams.

You can absolutely play with a partial MCL tear, main issue is it can be a bit unstable medially which leaves you vulnerable to other injuries if you land awkwardly.

GWS don’t have a huge forward line, would prefer Payne at 60% than Joyce tbh
KPD over 100kg, jumps off his left leg no way I would play him unless it was a minor MCL strain.

Payne is a serious unit. Nickname should be Reacher.
I was looking at him coming off the ground and thought whoaa , look at the shoulders and arms on that guy.

If we can get his confidence up to the level it looked to be in the first quarter on Saturday he's going to end up one helluva weapon.

i might be wrong, i thought it was his right leg he injured?

I am skeptical of him being right BUT the fact the club is talking about him training on tuesday seems like a positive. when players do zero work and just front up for thursday training, that's when you know it's a genuine roll of the dice

I'm in the skeptical camp as well but really hopping that's wrong
