Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads here! What better way to celebrate than to soak up that incredible win again on replay this morning! And to two Dads in particular - Blake Hardwick and Jarman Impey, you were immense!!

Was at the game yesterday. First time watching hawks live for the year and what a great game. Very well supported by the hawks faithful.

Pat ourselves on the back for a terrific turn out fellow hawkers.

Nice, homely ground to watch footy and I must say, GWS fans are not bad sports either.

Gagf he lighted us up in the first in the ruck, enormous in the last and Taylor had zero impact.

It's a solid 7/10 game in anyone's book.
Bit harsh as it was obvious Bedi was having a go at poster(s) who had questioned Chol in the preview thread.

I thought the laughing emoji in his post made that obvious but perhaps sarcasm needs be in orange font so that it's clear to everyone.

Edit: Just reading through the rest of the thread and the above has already been addressed. Move on...

GWS sub in Kelly and he turns the game in the Giants favour.

HFC sub in Jiath and he also turns the game in the Giants favour.

A great win, but some hard, and permanent selection calls need to be made.

How many chances can one player get, repeat the same mistakes, show he isn't remotely anywhere near being AFL standard and get yet another chance.

There is some real selection bias being shown to certain players, to the detriment of others.

Hopefully this transfer window resolves some of those issues.
There have been games this season when CJ has provided the spark the team needed when he has come on as sub.

Why would you not read through the rest of the thread before commenting? This is how we end up repeating the same shit.

Terrific win. Watched replay. The stand out features:

1. Newcombe is built for finals and needs to be. We rely so heavily on him in the midfield that if he is not the best player on the ground, we will always struggle to beat the best sides. It’s so much pressure on him. Fortunately he’s been our best in all 3 finals he’s ever played. He’s the best player at the club but needs Day fit and we need another gun in there.

2. Backline is as good as any in the comp. Hardwick, Sicily and Scrimshaw were amazing in the 4th, Barass,
Battle and Impey throughout. The backline is our strength and the way it held up in 1st quarter under siege allowed us the position to win the game.

3. Took chances with accurate goalkicking in first half. We had a bit of luck re-watching it in the first term. Some decisions went our way and we took those chances. That’s critical.

4. Fitness prevailed. Giants had numbers down on the bench by the end and brought in underdone players. They ran out of legs. Our sides fitness held up.

5. The third quarter was really terrible. Too many became panicky and lacked composure. Thought needs to be given to a few of those who have struggled with finals pressure - CJ, Moore (he’s been the opposite of Newk - 3 truly dreadful finals. Trying too hard?). A lot of fumbles and dropped chest marks in the third. I did think we’d botched the game and went early on that and got it wrong, but that loss of composure needs to be addressed. Hopefully the lesson of digging deep with guts and getting up exorcises some panicky nerves in the future. Hardwick and Sicily led the way with keeping their heads and calming things down. But it helped that Giants were gassed and could not sustain the onslaught.

6. Forward line is working well. Ginnivan was incredible. I loved Chol’s game - he was excellent in the ruck and kicked those two late goals. Gunston was Gunston.

7. Selections were bang on. Ability to apply pressure and keep composure under pressure is everything in finals. Butler should stay in as he showed both. I’d keep Dear in over Lewis because he can pressure. Where changes are considered for Adelaide it should be with pressure and composure under pressure in mind.

Winning interstate in a final is massive.

When Hawthorn score 100 points, they win the majority of the time. Now one might argue "so do most teams" but in Hawthorn's case today's win extends the steak to the last 98 games we've scored 100 points, we've won.

The last game we lost scoring 100 points was the Tom Hawkins after the siren kick.

Excluding that game, you have to go all the way back to 2009 to find a Hawthorn 100-point game where we lost.

I was having such a good morning Grumble guts until you mentioned that Tomahawk game! 🥴 But you’re right, I felt pretty confident once we reached the ton

Defence wins premierships.
When presented with this proposition on First Crack a few weeks ago, David King suggested the Bulldogs, the No.1 offensive side, might disprove it in 2025.

That was around the time I stopped wasting my time with that show.

CMac best game in a month.
Worpel best game in I dont know how long. He had been overthinking too much and getting caught or forced to rush, but yesterday he trusted his instincts and played so much better.

Newk is Newk. He just Newks. Yes its an adjective and means hugely dominant. He really is made for finals.

Gunston and Ginni. The 2 smartest forwards in the game? They just know where to be at all times. And use the ball so well.

Hardwick and Barrass. Oh my. Sicily and Scrimshaw. Impey and Amon. Battle and Weddle. 72 I50 and GWS manage 13 goals. They just straight up destroyed the GWS forwards.

I have all fingers and toes crossed for clear medicals for everyone. Weddle was ok at BoxHill last week but did everything we would have hoped for yesterday. Now rest and recover and step up a notch next week !!

There is always talk of the bottom six winning finals. I think only one player would be disappointed in their output. But I dont know who we bring in for him. Selection will be a real challenge. But with BoxHill still in finals as well, its a great position to be in.

On the I50 count. I’m not sure just how accurate the numbers are. I paid attention from the beginning of the 3rd. I think it was Jobe Watson who made a comment of how it was in the giants favour 9-1 for the quarter which was not long before Ginni kicked his first of the two he kicked in a row. The thing was by my count it was 5-4 giants favour. Am I missing something in how an I50 is counted. I honestly think the better measure would be to count them when they result in shot on goal. The Giants did obviously go forward a hell of a lot, but it was cut off at the knees by the defensive unit so often it was almost a pointless stat.

Id say it is any time it goes inside the 50m arc. We repelled them over and over and over.

Our defenders were all just huge. Hogan kicked 3 which sounds good, but it would have been kicked to him 30 times.

Gunston kicked 3 being kicked to maybe 10 times.

So, and try to put recency bias aside for a moment, which was the better win, this year or last year's EF?

Two very different wins. '24 was pure, we were in unstoppable form and in an irresistible mood that night.

Yesterday was a gritty, guts-it-out win against a surging tsunami.

For me, it's still last year. Maybe it was partly because I was there with 98,000 others, but I maintain that was the best I've seen us play since the threepeat. We would have beaten anyone else in the league that night.

What about you?

What a win! I thought we had choked we looked out of tickets late in the third. Absolutely meritorious win to fight back especially after they kicked the first of the last quarter so quickly.
So many great performances covered already, 3 additional comments from me:
1. For weddle to do that off that prep is mind blowing what an all time trade Sleepy!
2. At 3 qtr time I said it’s time for our leaders who had been poor to stand up. Sicily really did, Moore not so much. We need more from Dylan when it matters if he is truly to become a leader of the club in the future
3. Chol is terrible.😉 (I’m 50 I can’t do orange font)
