Autopsy Elimination Final 2025 : Hawks crush Giants

Just finished reading the game day thread. I was in the car for the entire 7 goal run by GWS, so wasn't following the thread. (If anyone is interested, I got out of the car and left it on the side of the road, once I realised I was the problem.)

I must say, there were several dummy-spitting, teddy-throwing, toddler tantrums in the game day thread, and we were actually winning for the entire duration of that period but for a few seconds where the plastic fantastics got a point up.

maybe take a chill pill next time and cry in the foetal position if we actually lose. That was pretty embarrassing. We aren't Carlton/Melbourne/Essendon/etc etc

That win was huge for the club, winning an away final after a year of losing away games we should have won is huge. Love to see that growth.

No matter what happens next week, I think I will reflect in this as a good season for the club.

Having said that I don't rate the Crows (particularly without Rankine/Rachell) and will be bitterly dissapointed if we don’t beat them next week.

So, and try to put recency bias aside for a moment, which was the better win, this year or last year's EF?

Two very different wins. '24 was pure, we were in unstoppable form and in an irresistible mood that night.

Yesterday was a gritty, guts-it-out win against a surging tsunami.

For me, it's still last year. Maybe it was partly because I was there with 98,000 others, but I maintain that was the best I've seen us play since the threepeat. We would have beaten anyone else in the league that night.

What about you?
THe euphoria that followed last year's game was just something else, as was the build up to the following week. There was just the feeling that we could achieve anything.

Yesterday it was celebrating a gutsy closing out of a team wed never beaten on their own dump. But some of the issues that have troubled us all year were still evident and we're riding a different wave of emotions.

We're a harder team than last year.

Disagree, let people vent in the match day thread. Get rid of the frustrations in the heat of the moment. Most people get a clear head once the game is over and post accordingly in the Autopsy.

Remember kids, what happens in the Match Day thread stays in the Match Day thread.

We had to win this game twice and the 2nd time was so much harder coz GWS were flying.
They have a dynamic game when they get going. Gee, 70 odd inside 50s. Need to look at this maybe. But they have some top class players.
To take back the momentum and win at a winless ground....well coz its a final as well.....i feel like this will be a win our players draw strength from for every away game.

Chol was electric in the Ruck 1st qtr. Like an extra huge midfielder. And I love how he Fricken hunts the ball. He really wants it in his hands. Luv the guy.

Which is why it annoys me when the commentators say 'he's been quiet until the last quarter', and ignore he is an impact 2nd ruck/around the ground player. To be able to impact in the ruck like does, and chip in regularly for goals and probably end with 40+ for the season is elite.

He's going to become a quicker, more potent and all-round better player than Kouta.

He's just 21 and I'll be very surprised if he isn't a Top 5 and perhaps even best player in the AFL in 2-3 years.

I agree with this - one of the great things about being a passionate supporter is you get emotionally invested in your team. Let people have their emotional reactions.

I'm generally an analytical observer and don't often lose my cool watching but I had to turn the TV off for five minutes and walk around the block to help manage watching the last quarter - others write angry messages on the gan
me day thread. Each to their own.

I do tend to stay off the game day thread though.

Also woke up with a bit of a sore Father’s Day head and off to a winery lunch today. I was a bit foggy so forgot to take credit for the win, I did the hard yards yesterday for the team…Carn’ the Hawkers!!! IMG_5881.jpeg

When Hawthorn score 100 points, they win the majority of the time. Now one might argue "so do most teams" but in Hawthorn's case today's win extends the steak to the last 98 games we've scored 100 points, we've won.

The last game we lost scoring 100 points was the Tom Hawkins after the siren kick.

Excluding that game, you have to go all the way back to 2009 to find a Hawthorn 100-point game where we lost.
Seriously did you have to remind me of that Geelong game. Sigh

and he had 7 tackles for the match. Not bad for a 200cm player. His last 6 or so minutes were huge, not just the goals but a couple of really important spoils over the boundary near the wing. Stopped GWS momentum. Very smart and calm under pressure.

I really hope the Worpel haters are choking on a big fat baguette this morning. He was great
Worpel and Nash both have limitations that are well known and understood. But they both cracked in hard offensively and defensively so that we effectively broke even in the clearances against a pretty strong midfield. They both made an important contribution to our win and did some excellent work when the chips were down in the final quarter.

Credit to Howie for how he commentates Hawks games. I'd be a message at that job
A bloke called Whateley could learn a lot about professional impartiality from proper professionsals like Howie - and Dunstall, for that matter.

I remember one instance yesterday when Sic (I think?) kicked out from full back long to Wedds on the wing and he had two players against him and I thought that’s a brain fade from Sic.

But then Wedds just brushed aside the two GWS players and marked it overhead anyway and I said to myself that Sic has that much confidence in Wedds he backs him to win a two v one marking contest!

His contested marking this year has gone to a whole new level, his hands are so good overhead.

All of our defenders absolutely killed it yesterday - all had massive moments and I’ve already (rightly) gushed about Dimma. However Scrimshaw’s game was beyond massive also. He was an absolute colossus last night and when Barrass was stuck on the bench in the last he dropped to fullback and went full 2013 GF Q4 Brian Lake mode. He was brilliant all game. I don’t get why anybody can talk even hypothetically about trading him - you can’t easily replace what he’s got and he’s easily in our top echelon of players. Any talk of him leaving makes me genuinely sad.

When we're 42 points down ad losing epically vent all you want, but putting shit on a team that's actually still ahead is just petulance.

Agreed - I love the transformation he's had over the last 18 months. His attack on the ball and the man and intensity are now elite - add that to elite judgement in the air and neat skills makes for a very valuable player.

In addition to all of the above that makes it three finals in a row where he has been in our top ten players (remember the demolition job he did on JUH in last years EM?).

He is a big game player made for finals.

He’s an undervalued player across the league (he hardly gets any press or hype) so even if we did trade him (god forbid) we would not get fair value.

Thought I'd watch a replay with Seven's commentary.

Heard BT call Wardy as Macdonald, not once but twice within the first 30 seconds.

Cancelling Seven's replay and will watch a repeat of Fox Footy's coverage instead.
