Was a horrible weekend of results really. Sydney losing was bad because they have so much to play for now. Us only winning by a bit combined with Freo thumping North throws a massive spanner in the works considering if North won it was probably only going to be a matter of whether we were the home team against North or they were.

We get rolled we're off to Perth, then off to Sydney or Adelaide, then Hawthorn (more than likely) in a prelim.

Finals start Saturday for us.

5 v 8 crosses over with 1 v 4. So if we finish 8th and head to Perth, the winner of that game plays the loser of 1 v 4 in week 2, which looks like Hawthorn v. Pies. Then it would be the winner of Adelaide and Sydney on the road in the prelim.

There is a worse 'worst case scenario'. Collingwood win, WCE lose, both North and Freo have huge wins (all these are likely possibilities) and we lose and we could finish 8th.

Thus 1st week we play WCE in Perth. I'd prefer Freo in Perth over WCE thanks.

In other words, we must beat Sydney.

Worser [sic] case scenario:
Cats lose to Sydney narrowly
Hawks beat WC in Melb - likely IMO
North thump GWS - likely
Freo thump Melb in Perth - likely
Collingwood beat Essendon - likely

North and Freo leapfrog us into 6th and 7th.

We play WC in Perth in week 1

We've had a fantastic year this year all things considered. Whatever happens from here on is a bonus in my book.

I disagree with that view for the one simple reason -where the only team that can stop Hawthorn from winning the flag -none of the other teams in the 8 have a hope in hell of beating Hawthorn .

There would be nothing better than derailing Hawthorns year -however 1st things 1st -as others have said -we have to beat the Swans this week -or we will playing either West Coast or Freo in Perth -and if that happens we will probably get eliminated -and Hawks will win a very soft flag

Agree.

The only positive is that Freo's win means our destiny is in our own hands, win and we're guaranteed a home final, lose and we're more than likely off to Perth.

Must win against a tough opponent.

Yep, we shouldnt be excused for not thumping Bulldogs and a few of the other battlers this year, it could bite us.

Absolutely. It's all very well, as some have suggested, that the boys are trying to conserve energy for a big finals campaign, just doing enough for what's needed etc. All that is fine unless you get eliminated in final #1 and/or have to travel interstate to play - what's the point of "saving energy" for a big finals campaign then FFS??

As its the geelong board will only respond to this bit... Whilst you guys are the ones that would be most likely to wreck it for us sydney, and collingwood if they get their act together are big threats aswell.

I reckon you guys have form at the right end of the year... and the only thing stopping you from making the gf is if you have to travel a bit in finals... makes this weekends game massive for both you and sydney... should be a cracker

How come no-one has thought of this eventuality which is quite likely.

Cats play first on Saturday and lose to Sydney (I think they will win making this pointless but for arguments sake)

Then North play and absolutely smash GWS which has the biggest chance of happening... weather permitting.

And that leaves Fremantle with the moral dilemma of do they try to beat Melbourne by a big enough margin so that can overtake Norths percentage, finish 6th and get the home final. If they didnt overtake North then they would have to travel to Melbourne which would not be ideal. Surely they would prefer to stay in Perth for the extra week against a team in WCE they know they can beat.

So on Saturday night if Fremantle realise they have to beat Melbourne by 100 points who would no doubt make it a dogged game like they have the ability to do then they might figure it would be better to try to finish 8th. And it would be risky for them to try to get up to a margin like that if they couldn't quite get there and in the process overtook Geelong's percentage.

Very interesting

I dont think beating Sydney is as important as people think.

A lot of glass half empty types in here.

The way I look it is that we have gone from a likely home final against North to a likely home final against Freo. A big improvement.

We will beat Sydney and beat them well. I am supremely confident of this.

I'm not bothered so much about the Sydney game.
Just need to get into the groove for finals.

I don't mind the idea of beating WC in Perth, Pies in Melbourne, and then heading to Sydney for a prelim.
I'd back the cats in to win all 3 of those actually.

First of all, that shows is we lose to Sydney it's all out of our hands, so yes beating Sydney is very important, I'd much rather our fate be in our own hands.

Secondly, because Freo play last they will know exactly how many points they must win by to get 6th and should be able to do so against a Melb that will roll over, so I think there's little risk in them going for it.

Thirdly, it doesn't really matter-a small Freo win, even if they don't really gun for it, should see us into 8th and against WCE.

Either way we have to win on Sat, hopefully our 'we don't care about this game' yesterday was with that in mind.

spot on PO. If we are going to get any where it has to be by controlling our own destiny and not relying on other results or other margins.

A few close losses this year, starting with the Freo game early on, are costing us now. But importantly our fate is still in our own hands and I'm very confident the crew at the cattery know this and will show it this weekend.

Agree.

And I think with this much on the line we will win.

Let's not forget we gave Sydney a 6 goal head start last time and almost beat them, if we actually play 4 quarters this time we can.

Collingwood are no threat IMO. If Sydney get the second chance it makes them your likely opponent in the GF. I do feel Hawks are better placed than anyone else to take the flag (as much as that really shits me)

Opponent is irrelevant. Will win 4 finals and go on to confirm our status as the greatest team of all.
for some of us the glass is half full. For some half empty. For Poida the schooner is always full to the brim and over flowing!! Love you attitude :thumbsu:

Interesting comment from Bundy post-match where he said "A lot of the boys had heavy legs...". Wonder if they had a little late-season caning on the track prior to Finals?

could be, or could be after the previous weeks game.
