Elite or Not? Sam Mitchell

Mitchell is a gun no doubt.

Is he Elite??? That's a hard question and a great topic for debate as everyone has different version's and ideas of what actually constitutes elite! For mine i think he is just below elite but an excellent player none the less and easily in the best 15 Mids in the AFL.

Mitchell is a beautifull kick, excellent clearance gatherer, tough as nails, very durable injury wise considering the role he plays and can easily be the difference between beating the Hawks and them smashing you. I cant recall many games where Mitchell has been best on ground and the Hawks have been beat.

Very consistent elite clearance player who constantly racked up possessions for years despite wearing the best tag week in week out.

Now the best tag goes to Hodge, but Mitchell wore it for years and performed.

Definitely elite.

I personally feel he is elite as i dont rate him in top 10 players in the game and i feel that is the level for elite. For the record i dont rate Joel Selwood elite either.

Most non Hawk fans have said no, while most hawk fans have said yes. Admittedly they see him more than anyone else so maybe the best to judge?

Not elite, very VERY good player and I love the fact that he's a Hawk. Arguably the best clearance player in the league, but his disposal at times can let him down. Tends to just lob it out in front of team-mates, like the Jordan Lewis incident. Had that been a worm burner he wouldn't have been in any sort of danger.

A-Grade clearance player, and a much needed Hawk. Love you, Sammy.

Very, very close. Just needs that one standout year, where he is able to seperate himself from being bunched with guys like Sewell, Lewis and Hodge. So it's Mitchell, then the other guys that are on the selection team.

Would make my team though.

Well elite for me is the best of the best, or close to it. I can't see myself looking back at the Hawks in 20 years time and thinking, "Man, Mitchell was a great player." Hodge and Franklin on the other hand, definetly.

overall i would say he is Elite when compared to "footballers" like Watson, Black, Selwood etc but is a touch below the "footballing athlete" like Goodes (on his day), Ablett etc.

He has been topp 10 brownlow fav a few times and i would say brownlow fav= approx brownlow. For example i would rate Swans "non brownlow year" last year as high as Cooneys charlie
