Autopsy Embarrassing Dogs smashed by Collingwood

Reduced game time though means direct comparisons to other years needs an adjustment of 20% for most statistics.
Yeah that's fair. It still is close to an all time low. 22 is good for 4th place. Adjusted, it would've been around 27, which is still concerningly low

If Dickson comes in, it has to be at the expense of Lloyd or Wallis. My god we are so slow up there.
At least with Wallis and Dickson you know what you are going to get. For me they play in best 22. There is half a dozen others - Suckling, Hunter, JJ, Lloyd, McLean, Dale - it literally depends on how the wind is blowing.

I think if you rewatch the game, Gardner was easily not the worst player (although that turn over kick was woeful) but the question for me is why so many players were down.

Besides Bailey Smith, Wood early, Hunter, and English busting his guts (and he was soundly beaten) not a single other player stood up. To blame a 3rd game player for that effort is not just stupid but also ignorant. At least he tried every contest he was involved in.

Edit: actually in retrospect Crozier & Bailey Williams was good too.

You’ve rewatched it?

It was disappointing in that I was looking forward to footy to take my mind off what is currently happening.

A couple of random thoughts:

We have been the media darling all preseason, some of us were uneasy about this, other teams would have taken note....and might have been pissed off.
The prelim, gave teams a blue print how to beat us, take out Bont and put the pressure on and our structure collapse.
We had made a statement in the North game, that targeting one of our players would see a response, that was before the current unease around CROVID-19.
The umpires, seemed to love awarding free kicks to Collingwood in their forward fifty, at least two goals were wrongly paid free kicks.
Bont, talk about being set up by the media, give the kid a break let him settle into the Captain role, no other young player has had so much pressure put on him with the exception of Boyd.
As excited as I was with the addition of Josh and Alex, it takes longer than a preseason to get the hang of our team.
As for Bevo, I am pondering a comment that was said to me yesterday, he is a great manager of people, but not a good coach.

Personally, I don’t think we will see the season out, whoever plays to win a premiership this year, will either be gifted it, or it won’t happen, either way the 2020 premiership will always have an asterix next to it.

Can’t entertain the idea that Bevo is not a good coach. When this team is playing at its best, it is a well drilled unit and a pleasure to watch. Players don’t want to play for bad coaches irrespective of whether they’re good managers of people.

While I would put this performance as a "room for improvement"

I would really ask doggie posters tom have a minute or two seconds thought time before smashing the players with a baseball bat.

Consider the fact that all week Australian citizens all week have been ordered by the prime ministers to keep your distance from fellow Australians for the good of the country. And yet the players(from both sides would have asked to gang tackle, hunt in numbers etc etc). A bit of a contradiction yes.

The bulldog players I love and are always proud of them. But first and foremost they are human beings with family, could be parents, could be partner and father. And who knows for certain how badly they wanted to play given what is happening in the world and on our shores. I don't. No matter the teams if you have one team fully commited, and one team a bit reluctant to play, you are going to get a result like this everytime. And we all don't know what is going through their mind.

Yes we were sloppy, heistant and looked lacklustre on the field. But given what is happening in the world and what everybody else would/should be doing I give our players plaudits for just turning up. Don't think I have ever thought that before but last night I did. I didn't take anything out of the result.

Wow, professional footballers get credit for just turning up (not sure many even did that). So glad my "contribution" (their word) to the club as a member is so valued. We were the centre of attention on Friday night football with everyone aching to get some football and they served that up. A proud club like Collingwood wouldn't lay down and just accept what we were happy to.

Peter and Ameet assured us on Friday that "The boys are fit, firing and ready to go". It didn't appear that way to me. It was insipid and if they were "a bit reluctant to play" and don't want to show some pride in their performance, better hurry up and find 22 players who will.

Speak to most people and they will tell you that footy is 90% psychological, if you have belief instilled in you you can play. 2016 is proof, not the most talented team they did the extraordinary, they had huge belief. Anyway not saying I necessarily agree with it, but just another thing to throw in the mix, worth pondering as I said.

In what way was Hunter good? So sick of him sending the ball into orbit.

I loved the time he hurried a kick across his body to no one while Wallis is running free slightly ahead of him screaming for the ball. Probably couldn't hear him over the crowd.

Both sides were playing under the exact same duress.

Blaming conditions is an absolute cop out, we were pathetic.
I can't work these people out. Its like our side has been sheltered and forced to endure the last two-three weeks themselves. The rest of civilization remains in the pre-covid world.

Im perplexed. Do all the players get a participation trophy and a pat on the back also?

Full house at marvel and a normal season- we don’t throw up that performance imo. Bravo to the pies for keeping focused and switched on.

Sorry, but no.

I understand everyone is adjusting to a new normal but that was park footy from the dogs. Embarrassing doesn’t do justice to it.

Plus many of us are expected to do our job in this unique set of circumstances - surely footy clubs can too, at least to a certain extent.

I feel like we have a real problem with coaching arrogance, physical attitude and team selection. If COVID-19 didn’t exist my guess is we’d have similar problems.

Does anyone else think that our reluctance to tackle could come down to fear of infection? Could have been a strategic move by Collingwood to have Pendles tested mid-week to spook us?

It's a shame they didn't have infectious enthusiasm.

You criminally left out Wallis and Caleb Daniel. Best two for us last night

Here's a relatively newbie-to-the-game question; how are Rucks developed? Are they drafted as Rucks and specifically trained or are tall forwards or defenders moved there and if they're good, they stay.

Certainly there has to be an option on the ground other than English who would be more effective at the position, right?
Rucking is a specialist position , a ruck is drafted as a ruck. It takes time to develop the strength and experience to become a consistent top performer.
English came up against a generational Top Ruck, a tough lesson but hopefully he learns from it!!

Nah Cavarra deserves a chance. He chased and provided a spark. Bevo also usually gives a newbie a few consecutive games to have a crack.
Thought Cavarra showed a few signs on a tough night that he may have enough tricks to keep a spot. A really rugged time to be a forward in that game

Hunter doesn't take any time to assess any options, just bangs it on the boot. That's where our trouble starts because everyone is out of position streaming forward.
And we get cut up on the rebound as their forwards have tons of space

Thanks mate - I was mostly a lurker last year but I'm trying to be more active in the conversation this year, even as a relatively newbie.

Yeah, I hate playing Collingwood - Grundy always dominates English. He plays well in stretches but doesn't matchup well with the big boys yet. Hoping he grows fast into a reliable ruck.
It’s really hard for young ruckmen to develop in the position as They come up against the toughest biggest player in every team. Luke Darcy was sh1t when he started as well. Scott Wynd was better earlier. The one ruckman we’ve had that dominated from his debut game was Minson. He came in and absolutely smashed Barnaby French if my memory serves me. He got named in the best and later developed into an All Australian ruckman. He was a huge specimen from day 1. I see a bit of that in Sweet.
English reminds me a bit of Darcy but he just lacks that killer instinct. Hopefully he can put on a bit more upper body muscle and live up to the hype.
