Well there's the other side... County sides are probably mixed between The Old Pros, the England Hopefuls, the promising players, Young'uns and overseas. Now the Hopefuls and the promising players will mostly benefit with and against Overseas players and will gain experience. Less overseas will probably mean more people coming in trying to qualify through residency which could wake the Promising and lagging players and get them to perform for their spot.

If a player is good enough they will make it. Im not quite sure how Clark will benefit greatly from bowling to fringe county players whereas those young guns, who are the future England players, can only benefit from facing the best bowlers in the world.

To put it bluntly Emburey is talking out of his bottom. IMO of course;)

Oh yes, someone of Clark's ablity but others like Cullen who has been touted as a future Aussie Test player can certainly benefit from bowling to the Experienced county pros along the likes of Ramps, Butcher, Crawley. C Adams.

Absolutely. The more cricket the better, but as long as that cricket is against good opposition. Mr Emburey cant have it both ways. He cant claim that County Cricket is a breeding ground for international players because of its strength when those players are part of the reason why it is strong.

Shouldnt it also improve the standard of those that are playing against these imports?

If you take the imports out of all the county sides will the competition be as strong?

Oh, I totally agree with that. I think Emburey is talking out of his arse as well.

I dont get how emburey can be so arrogant about the county system by suggesting that it has developed all these australian players and that it is the reason we have been dominant. Dont all the english players come up through the county system and have more years experience in it than most australian?
Additionally the australians playing county must already be known of for a county club to use up an international spot on them.

I think the point he might be making is that they get to play cricket all year round which will enhance their skills. Poms can do the same over here with Grade cricket, but I would suggest county is of a higher standard than grade cricket.

They are.. but hardly any do.

Sarwan had a brief stint last year but he was the first major one for a while.
This is where Emburey's argument falls apart a bit. He argues that The Windies cricket has gone down hill since they stopped playing County - but West Indians stopped playing county because their cricket had gone down hill and they were not wanted.

THis argument about the number of foreign players taking away the opportunties from locals and in the long term harming the national team comes up with the soccer too. It is just absolutely riduculous for both the cricket and soccer. The national team only needs 11 starters for both games. THere are 18 counties and 20 Prem league teams so that is 200 odd starting positions. Even if half are occupied by non Poms it still gives the Poms 100 players too choose from. If a young bloke can not crack that a spot in that 100 it is pretty unlikely he will crack a spot in the top 11.
