Emerging spinners in Australia

That's why our spinners are average or handy.

Can't wait for a leg spinner.
You do not get it do you. I'd rather have an average spinner than cheat.
Chucking is cheating, encouraging young bowlers to bend the arm should be admonished.

We do not cheat, we do not chuck.

We do not cheat, we do not chuck.
Plus no nation in the world carries a chucker as their main spinner now

It'd be nice to have a left arm wrist spinner.

Or at least left arm orthodox.

Zampa should be banned from t20 and one day stuff and Warney should mentor him. He has talent but needs to get the short form habbits out of his game. I have no doubt he can make it at test level.

Swepson looks a better FC prospect than Zampa to me.

A bit over a year on, I decided to look at the domestic records of our top spinners - the best from each state, and the Test incumbent:

Sheffield Shield
Lyon - 33 matches, 39.48 average, 83.61 strike rate, 2.83 economy rate
O'Keefe - 56 matches, 25.08 average, 60.99 strike rate, 2.47 economy rate
Zampa - 34 matches, 45.93 average, 69.81 strike rate, 3.95 economy rate
Agar - 36 matches, 39.28 average, 77.06 strike rate, 3.06 economy rate
Holland - 45 matches, 31.48 average, 64.18 strike rate, 2.94 economy rate
Swepson - 15 matches, 38.63 average, 56.33 strike rate, 4.11 economy rate
Boyce - 44 matches, 49.86 average, 79.69 strike rate, 3.75 economy rate

Domestic One-Dayers
Lyon - 36 matches, 37.69 average, 47.31 strike rate, 4.78 economy rate
O'Keefe - 43 matches, 58.00 average, 70.80 strike rate, 4.92 economy rate
Zampa - 25 matches, 31.78 average, 37.61 strike rate, 5.07 economy rate
Agar - 20 matches, 38.85 average, 45.65 strike rate, 5.11 economy rate
Holland - 47 matches, 31.71 average, 39.90 strike rate, 4.77 economy rate
Swepson - 13 matches, 51.50 average, 54.10 strike rate, 5.71 conomy rate
Boyce - 28 matches, 35.06 average, 37.45 strike rate, 5.62 economy rate

Domestic T20s
Lyon - 31 matches, 17.07 average, 14.83 strike rate, 6.91 economy rate
O'Keefe - 55 matches, 32.06 average, 28.56 strike rate, 6.74 economy rate
Zampa - 38 matches, 27.77 average, 22.97 strike rate, 7.25 economy rate
Agar - 41 matches, 35.45 average, 28.90 strike rate, 7.36 economy rate
Holland - 24 matches, 36.66 average, 28.00 strike rate, 7.86 economy rate
Swepson - 20 matches, 26.60 average, 21.60 strike rate, 7.39 economy rate
Boyce - 45 matches, 25.04 average, 18.31 strike rate, 8.20 economy rate

Interesting to see that our Test incumbent is actually our best-performed T20 bowler as well.

That's a pretty decent start for Swepson. Best Shield strike rate out of all those spinners

Worst economy rate too.

Geez, the number of FC matches that Boyce has played, with the record he's got, shows how desperate we have been for "the next Warne".

Given Lyon got his start in the short form stuff it shouldn't be that surprising should it?

Well, his best T20 bowling has come over the last couple of years, and he's apparently not suited to represent the country in that format of the game, so yeah, it is a little surprising TBH.

Swepson going at 4 an over is ok when his average is ~30, not 38

Agar averages 39 but goes at 3 an over, I'd rather take Agar based on that.

Interestingly Nair's been chucking the whole big bash and only just got banned

Very timely bump too.
Got to see that even looking back at this LPno1 is completely full of s**t.

Especially now that finger spinner Lyon has cemented himself as the best spinner in the world. 450+ test wickets should beckon.

But.. but.. but.. we need a leggie:drunk:

I'm shocked to be sitting here.

Unless he's trying for a doosra I'm interested to see how...

SLA's rarely have a chucking problem for that reason.
Nair's a right arm offie, the Fox Sports article has a decent video of a dodgy looking delivery

Great research!

How do the selectors in all formats go? Do they go for the best average or the best economy or the best strike rate?

Been a very good point on FB recently about how England continually pick Adil Rashid (in ODI cricket) even if he isn't picking up wickets as a front line spinner. Every good team in the world has a very good front line spinner. Australia doesnt and has duly struggled.
