I thought the question to ask was the 'link' between nationalism and national service. I see it more as patriotism especially as part of the program is civic culture.
Isn't nationalism an extreme form of patriotism? Given Macron's recent speech don't think that is what he has in mind.
Who hasn't the fat orange snatch snatchin' lump dumped on?

He was never 2015 Justin Trudeau. Macron got in because the mainstream conservative had to quit over impropriety (or something like that) with only a few weeks and months left in the campaign, and then he won the election itself because the other candidate was a far right monster.
The popularity of the three ideological leaders (Macron of the liberals, Le Pen of the conservatives and Mélenchon of the socialists) is roughly where at was at the first round of the election. Mélenchon supporters will probably stay home at the European elections because they don't like the EU, whereas Le Pen supporters will go to the polls for the same reason.
Unsurprisingly, picking a status quo leader with a shiny new face hasn't really changed anything.

France has a very well supported and established welfare state that is the driver of French culture. The National Front supports the welfare state which includes French education because attacking that would be seen as an attack on French life and culture, and a submission to Anglo cultural norms.
