End compulsory voting

Nothing more typifies the decline of the West than slobs claiming moral superiority as an excuse not to get off the couch and vote.
Just go in, get your papers and stuff them in the ballot box untouched.

I've postal voted every year apart from when I first voted at 18. Can't be bothered with crowds and queues at the best of times. And because I am not rushed I take my time to research the independants and fill out the form completely. Nothing is warmer than the feeling of numbering 0-70ish and saving the last few numbers for The Greens

well if we have to do one important thing in our lives... why not make it a vote for your country even if you don't want to vote.. if you don't like the policies.
and if you don't like your current member. or the pm.. just do that one thing...

Just one thing just one important thing... it makes you feel that you have done something relevant in this world..

Now it is over.. for another three years... thanks people...

You only had to do a minimum of 12 for below the line. I left The Greens and Labor (among others) blank.

Yeh I know but its all about the vibe, the Mabo if you will.
I am a spiritual terrorist, I like to send out negative energy because it suits my political ideaology.

In the modern Australian version of a Democracy where people and organisations buy votes (elections) they should just remove the middle people (the voters) and just add up the cash.

Yikes.

At the very least, mandatory voting takes away the ability to claim nonsense like this.

'Voting rights....no wait privilege'

But you do not have the right to vote if you are not registered.

In Australia you still have to get your name on the electoral role to be able to vote.

Agree that opt-in electoral roll is an issue. Big and unnecessary barrier to youth participation.

Filling in one form is a big and unnecessary burden, I know this is the laziest weakest generation in history but surely even they can fill in a form.

If people don't want to vote they shouldn't be made to.

If you have the position of not wanting or not being motivated to vote you clearly have little interest in politics or the nation as a whole. Less disinterested people making uninformed votes the better. Might weed out some people manipulated by newspaper and free to air TV news headlines.

Except we run the risk of some of the dodgy tricks played by both parties in the states happening here where the party in power in an area or a business/union makes it as inconvenient as possible to get to a voting centre in areas where the opposition vote is concentrated.

Your point is a good one, which is why pre polling and postal voting has to be protected here.

That describes a significant proportion of the voting population, regardless of ideology, age or voting plans.

Also, no.
People consistently show a failure to necessarily undertake rational decisions in their long term interest. Eg. Poor diet, sedentary lifestyle etc.

By that logic let’s make voting only available in cities, for 3 hours on a Wednesday morning. If rural people care enough they’ll come to the big smoke, and people will skip work / University / child care duties.

agreed!

Introducing a policy knowledge test before voting would add more value to democracy

this seems like a way to discourage those with less money and less education from participating. So no.

Would likely significantly increase minor party voting, especially Greens.

I don't get how this is remotely comparable to lack of political knowledge or being informed about who you are voting for.

How many people do you see and hear of who opening brag about donkey voting, ticking random boxes and who state they have no idea who the PM is and have no idea which party the PM belongs to? It is scary how common this is, and often it is from otherwise reasonably intelligent people. We have a substantial amount of uninformed voters, many of them willingly so, who only vote to avoid being fined.

Schools do not do enough work educating kids on politics (and many other real world things.) and adults are too quickly influenced by headlines.
