End compulsory voting

As a Kiwi there is no way I'm renouncing my New Zealand citizenship.

My ancestors fought at Gallipoli.

Aotearoa would never ask you Australians to renounce your citizenship.

Not sure why you expect us to.
Fine, go back to NZ then. Bye.

You can't do that;
https://www.aec.gov.au/FAQs/Electoral_Roll.htm#remove

Hence, this is why is shouldn't be compulsory in the first place.

The electoral office do lie about how easy it is to be removed from the electoral roll.

They give one example being moving overseas but that example alone highlights mischievousness. Surely death is another example, mental and physical incapacitation another.....so that’s four. Religion another etc etc

Fine.

Don't commemorate ANZAC Day then mate.
I'll commemorate AAC day then.

Seriously, your reasoning is spurious at best and your apathy is what is wrong with the country at the moment. Too much "I don't like it" with absolutely no solutions, just putting up shop and running away. If we do away with compulsory voting, do we just do electorates per people registered?

I'm actually a member of a political party... are you?

So I'm hardly apathetic.

My local member (a female) was replaced by a party hack. I don't feel like voting for him.

But you'd still force me to vote?

Nah mate. I went to my first meeting of the Young Nats when I was 15 and have been politically engaged ever since.

Of course, vote for someone else? That's what you do when you dont want that person to win. It's pretty simple logic.

Young nats says it all. Oh boy.

I'm a member of the LNP.

There is no one else on the ballot I feel like voting for.

Surely it should be my democratic right to 'sit this one out'?

In most other countries I'd be able to...

I know you are. You said Young Nats - not hard to work that one out.

You can also put in a blank ballot, but you're basically thumbing your nose at everyone. You are voting for a person and a party. Your democratic right is to chose the person you think best to fulfill the needs of your community. You're being selfish. Voting for yourself, not voting for Australians. That is why you want to sit it out. Selfish, lazy and apathetic. The modern generation.

I'd be breaking the law if I put in a blank ballot.

You should know that.

'Selfish, lazy and apathetic.'

Learn the rules mate.

No you aren't. It is ruled informal.

According to section 268 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act (1918), a vote is informal if:

  • the ballot paper is not marked at all

NZ it is.

Except I wouldn't be fulfilling my legal obligation if I put in a blank ballot wouldn't I?

You actually have to mark the ballot... It's first year politics...

Did you go to uni or nah?
No, you don't. Read the AEC website. All you have to do is attend the polling booth. After that you can draw a donkey on there if you want, leave it blank etc. It is then tossed out as an informal vote.

Go back to NZ if you love it so much.

NO. You can't leave it blank...

I'm a Kiwi and even I know that... technically you have to mark the paper...

Have you ever studied Australian politics or nah?

You seem to be amiss on some basic tenets...
You can't be removed from the roll unless you are living overseas or have a mental impairment (like dementia etc).

Just read the AEC website for once in your life. You don't have to. They can't find out who did what on any paper..

True... but technically you still have to mark the paper.

That's the law...

I'm surprised you weren't aware of this...

I learnt this decades ago at uni...

YOU HAVE TO MARK THE PAPER...

A blank ballot is technically illegal...
