Ending congestion

I think the key is reducing the time for prior. If you can take a step, you've had your prior opportunity. Turns a lot of ball ups into frees and gets the footy moving.

So, in congestion, a player grabs the ball and is immediately tackled and is caught for holding the ball?
Not sure that is fair and under your suggestion won’t everybody in a pack situation just sit off the ball and wait for someone else to take possession? Then wrap their arms around them waiting for the free kick?

Why don't coaches instruct players to hack the ball off the ground to get the ball forward quicker rather than create numerous stoppages

Allow 3rd man up and the ump needs to throw it up as soon an they receive it.

Third man up definitely needs to come back. You take the risk that your player will impact the contest and leave yourself at an outnumber if they don't.

It's a great risk/reward play that the AFL removed for reasons that no one even remembers.

They’ve just got to pay what’s there. So many throws go unnoticed, and another thing that happens a lot is a player ducking a bit/getting taken high and it’s a ball up. If there’s high contact, it’s either a free for high or the player ducked and it’s HTB.

yep 6 guys standing around the ball waiting for the other team to pick it up and get the easy free kick would great watching.

4 subs, and you immediately reduce congestion, while also improving the standard of player on the field.

That's the point though - you don't have to pick it up - punch/kick it forward and clear the congestion until you have time and space to pick it up.

I was generally against this rule but the way the game has degenerated over the last couple of years I'd be seriously in favour of giving it a pre season trial just to see what it looks like.

Not sure why people think it’d mean players standing around waiting for opponents to take possession.

Go and watch some play. Watch any 10 minutes of play.. players always attack it and get rid of it quickly via handball or kick, and the game moves quickly. However there are situations where players blatantly take possession knowing they’re about to be mauled to the ground. In that instance, they should also keep the game moving... or be penalised if they don’t.

It depends a lot on the player too. Some basically do it already, their first instinct is always to keep the ball moving.

Others just sit on it. They should be penalised for causing rugby.

You can still attempt to bullock your way through a pack... just keep the ball in front of you, don’t grab it. If you’re tackled then, you’ll get a free.

As for ruckwork, well it may revive it with ruckman actually attempting to win a clear tap and hit it to advantage or space. “Ruckwork” these days is largely just dropping the ball at your feet and letting 6 midfielders dive on it.

It might even cause some offensive set ups at stoppages rather than both sides sitting defensively off the stoppage, s**t scared the other side might break through (there’s another rugby term...)

The game moves on when players take possession, get clear and get a quality possession, without prior it will either be waiting on the opposition to pick it up or scrappy rubbish rushed play until a free for ball is called and then the ball is kicked 50m to the next flog of seagulls fighting over a chip.

the issue its 36 players within 40m of the ball, you need to stop that. that's the disease, the rest is the symptoms.

It’s the constant stoppages that allow that. If the game keeps moving, 36 players can’t and don’t keep up with it.

Only one team on the ground at a time start in the middle then the ball has to be carried back to the full back and then taken down the ground with kicks and marks only until you score, then swap teams, no congestion the apparent tackling problem is solved lots of marks and kicks etc.

Australian rules basketball the AFL's dream.

Make racing the same...

The biggest problem is free kicks. When you pay a free kick all the players immediately run into a huddle in one little spot and the player with the free will kick it straight into that spot of 30ish players. Happens every time. That is why free kicks cause congestion. You can even hear it in the instructions. "When our backs get the ball, huddle up! Bunch up in a huddle!" That is the mantra drilled into the players. If you look at the era of free flowing football in the 70s there are hardly any frees paid.

Oh wait a minute...

No they don't! The instructions are run and spread! When your team gets the ball, you run and spread.... Now I remember! Congestion is the natural result of play and it is the whistle that keeps things flowing.

Here’s a perfect example from today’s game from Twitter.

It’s a stoppage and look what happens.

Players grab the ball knowing they can try to charge through without risk.

Result?

Rugby.

Another stoppage.

So it’d be holding the ball. The behaviour would change... keep the game moving.

Would rather that be paid in the back to be honest. Would prefer the onus to be on tacklers to not land in opponents back to complete the tackle.

So having the players knock, soccer and push the ball around the ground in a huge mauling scrum is much better than what we currently have.....

The ball is going to be knocked and kicked clear of the scrum faster than it can move - you are massively underestimating how quickly the ball will be cleared into open space where someone can pick it up.

This idea is literally the antithesis of what good football is. You remove prior opportunity you remove the incentive to go for the ball. Then you'lkl have two players waiting for the other to go for the ball first just so they can tackle them.

*Insert Billy Maddison meme... *

“Prior opportunity” is a relatively new concept. It didn’t used to exist. It’s laughable people think the game would be a totally different sport.

Players would always take possession whenever possible because having possession of the ball means a more effective disposal. It’s much easier to kick or handball accurately than it is to tap or soccer the ball.

Watch any passage of play. Players grab the footy constantly and either dispose of it extremely quickly before being wrapped up, or even as they’re being tackled. That’s fine and will continue.

But there’s no doubt there’s instances when players take possession of the ball - usually around stoppages - knowing full well they’ll be mauled to the ground. And the rules protect them.

It’s not good for the game. It causes repeat stoppages which allow players to take a break (offsetting the fatigue the AFL is so intent on creating anyway) and put in place more defensive zones to further slow the game down.

Players shouldn’t have a god-given right to take possession. The key to a flowing game, and everything that everybody wants (higher scoring, a more attractive game) is to keep it moving.

That needs to be the number 1 priority: keep it moving. Not “take possession”. That’s the way the game was designed and what made it what it was. It’s one of the major differences to rugby which is all about protection of the ball.

This obsession with allowing possession and protection of the ball has been the biggest cause of congestion.

Keep it moving... keep it moving... keep it moving

I have no doubt part of the issue is we’ve become obsessed with possession. The ability to “win the ball” is lauded like it never was. Win possession! “Inside mids!”

What differentiated the game and made us all love it was the speed, unpredictability, high marking contests and goals. The athletic feats... not wrestling in a pack like rugby.

Now we’re obsessed with trying to get it back, but not recognising the real issue and true causes.
