Steve Waugh was kissed on the dick by the selectors more than any player in history.

May not have been dropped and recalled 8 times, but it took 8 years in his protected species undroppable career for his test average to bid farewell to the 20s.
Before I was properly paying attention to cricket, I'll have to take your word for it.

Your letting emotion cloud your judgement.

Shaun Marsh has a far better record than Steve Waugh after the same number of Tests. Marsh averages 36, which is not far under the low 40s expected of an adequate Test level player.

Waugh was not just an under contributor, he was dead weight. In his first 8 years he played in 17 series. He averaged 25 or less in 9 of them. He averaged less than 20 in 6 of the 17.

And yet he was the golden child of the NSW mafia and could not be dropped.

Went Ok at the back end of his career, though. But any other player in the history of the game would have had his cards stamped long before.

Too bad Marsh is 34 and would have to play until his early 40’s to replicate Tugga. By that time having been dropped about 20 times.

At the end of Waugh's first 8 years as a Test bat he averaged 41, and in that same period he averaged 50 outside of Australia.

Aided by an inordinate proportion of not outs.

For example. 86-87 in India. Waugh averaged 59 over 3 tests. Sounds good. Until you notice how many runs that contributed to the team's fortunes. 59.

Try to name any player, ever, who was so protected. Waugh's first 3 series, over 8 tests, he scored the amazing total of 173 runs. Amazing because he was allowed to remain in the side. I can't think of another player who goes even close to that.

Wow what a sad indictment on the state of Australian Cricket that the best options include a Bloke who has had 8 failed cracks at it and another who doesn’t even keep for his State and has only ever made one First Class century…

He was a pretty handy bowler and fielder too which helped keep him in the side and Australia was short of quality players back then, NZ thrashed Australia in the 1985/86 test series along with the Poms in the 1986/87 Ashes series so it's not like Steve Waugh was the only problem in that side.
