I think England and Australia could survive as the only Test playing nations- then you would see the calendar filled with IPL type leagues and tournaments all over the world, but particularly in the sub continent. Not sure how the Windies would go with that- if the elephant in the closet of US sports might wipe out the sport if Test cricket disappeared there.
As for the South Africa Boxing Day issue, would it not make some sense for the two nations to reach agreement on sharing the date? I know- Melbourne without a boxing Day test- horrible! But one year, the Aussie team goes to South Africa, another year they come here. I could see Australia putting on (horror of horrors) a big one day tournament while the Tests were on in South Africa, obviously using the key non-Test players and perhaps having an overseas side provide opposition. Maybe even make it an invitational match, with top players from around the world.
I hope it doesn't go that route, however- thoroughly enjoy Test cricket still, and had a marvelous day at Trent Bridge this past summer.
