As a backup ruck he has to be better than Cloke, Jong and Dunkley....

Longer had quite literally 0 kicks and 5 handballs last week with 82% time on ground.

I'd suggest that English might get out muscled in the ruck contests but English's natural midfielder traits in winning the ball and clean skills below his knees and calm decision making whilst under pressure would be even more effective than they already are when coming up against an opposition ruckman who has already shown little ability in areas outside of the ruck contest itself.

Combine that with the fact that Boyd has also turned himself into something like a possession-getting-ruckman (touching 20 possessions a game at times, which for ruckmen standards is like a midfielder getting 35+), and the fact that English and Boyd can rotate through the ruck for 50/50 of the time and remain fresh and give Longer something new to think about each time they rotate, you can sort of get a feel for the strategic advantage that we're going for.

English on a wing might be a bit of a joke, but in relation to competing up against a ruckman who only had 5 disposals for an entire match, it's almost as if we will be playing him on the wing.

The only time Longer will see English is when he looks up to watch the ball being tapped over his head at ruck contests.

The rest of the time he will be breathing Timmy's dust from his spring heels.

Didnt set the house on fire but did ok. No clangers. Used it well when he did get it. Competed well and was rarely beaten in the ruck. Didn't get a lot of the ball but many times he was in perfect position and the boys didn't kick to him. Seemed to spend a lot of time on the bench too.

Is it just a coincidence that when Beveridge finally uses one of my strategies we have our MOST COMPREHENSIVE victory so far this year? Our most CONSISTENT performance?
We must persist with this strategy. Opposition wingmen will DREAD coming up against us, knowing whom their direct opponent is going to be.
