He's more than just a tagger. At 190cm he isn't exactly short, can take a contested mark, shows courage, lots of skill with hand or foot, and can play centre, wing or the flanks easily.
I think he has been under-utilised at the Crows as a tagger, the Coasters and Freo recognise this and that is why there is so much interest. He would be on the 'must keep' list but if he wants to go home then it should be for a reasonable amount.

Stinger is a better player than 1 year wonder Chick who you gave up 1 1st rounder for. ;)

wow, im sorry for causing such a stire. i didnt think a claim "that taggers arnt worth early picks" would hit such a heart string. to be honest, i would consider giving up our first round pick for him, but only late in the trade period after we have sounded out other options.

while looking for my waters article, i saw in the advertiser that he only wants to come to the eagles next year.

"Young (manager) laughed off suggestions Stenglein would be prepared to join Fremantle, saying if he did return to Perth it would only be with the Eagles, where he has several close mates".

that does make things alittle bit more interesting.

u have probly seen the article, but here it is anyway.

if he returns to Perth, it will depend on the trade as to where he goes! if Freo offer a better deal to the Crows then thats where he will go...of course if he doesnt like that scenario, then he can always stay! ;)

what Stinger and his manager need to realise, is the AFC hold the aces in this trade, in that Stinger can say "only trade with West Coast" but if Freo came up with a better deal thats the one the AFC will take...obviously pending Stingers approval! After all, Freo are in Perth, and thats where mummy is! :D

Chick's been pretty outstanding this last year actually. Injured early on, but over the last 10 rounds he's been consistently amongst our best afield.

There's no doubt Stenglein would be of some value to both WA clubs, he's a decent player, hence the interest. Exactly how much value would be debateable.

Some things which will influence what you get for him and where he ends up.

- Firstly, I don't think there is any real prospect of him being scratched to the PS draft. FWIW, I think Port were idiots to do what they did with Stevens- people say it would make other players think twice about leaving the club, even if that were true, is it really productive to keep your list together on the basis of fear? If he definitely wants to go to WA then the deal will happen no matter what.
If he's lukewarm about it and a satisfactory trade can't be done he might stay at Adelaide. I don't think anyone on the outside can say how definite he is about leaving, but that has huge bearing on what kind of deal will come out/

- The respective situation of the two WA clubs is that Fremantle are in desperate need of a tough, hard at it clearance player or 3, West Coast would like him probably on the basis that getting a decent player with fine leadership skills is never a bad move. If it were 2 teams going for the one player, Fremantle will make a harder play for him, they also have a bit more to offer in the way of draft picks because of their ladder position.

- His trade value largely depends on whether Josh Carr is also on the market. Both are similar in that they're defensively oriented midfielders, there is no way a WA club could take both Carr and Stenglein because of salary cap issues. If they are both on the market suddenly it is 2 players looking to go to two teams which rather precludes the possibility of a bidding war.

-There's no doubt that Carr would be Fremantle's first choice and that they'd have the inside running to get him because of the family connection. I don't think West Coast will have a serious look a Carr. If Freo get Carr (and on past form they'd probably pay through the nose for him.) then it leaves Adelaide to deal with West Coast. Thats might be the happier result for Stenglein given that the rumor was that he wanted to come West to play with his mate Chad Fletcher.

-West Coast would probably offer their 2nd round pick given they have a great F/S pickup with their 3rd rounder. If Adelaide flat out refused I dare say its possible we might on trade a fringe player + 2nd round pick to a melbourne club for a higher 2nd round pick. Thats as far as it goes I think, if Adelaide weren't happy with that deal we'd leave it on the table and let them try and explain to Stenglein why they wanted to screw him.

-Of course the scenario changes if Josh Carr decides to stay at Port. Then it's Freo wanting Stenglein quite badly and West Coast probably making a play half because we want him and half out of sheer bloody mindedness to make Freo pay through through the nose. Under those circumstances, I think he might end up going for something as high as either WA team's first rounder or possibly someone like Troy Simmonds.

So yeah, in summary,
If Josh Carr wants to come back to WA
-WC's 2nd rounder for Stenglein.

If Josh Carr stays put
-Probably end up being Freo's 1st Round pick or Troy Simmonds for Stenglein.

In The Advertiser today Stenglein's manager claimed he was not interested in going to Fremantle. He claimed it will be Adelaide or West Coast.

****

Oh wow! He chose a preference club! My God! And Mead claimed that no player would do that, to jeopardise their trip home!

Woops!

Because he was sooo specific,

I think that increases the chances he stays. He doesn't just want to go home, he wants to go WC if he leaves.

none of that suggests 'I won't play for you', in the same way as 'I'm going home' does.

we will have to see. Of course it could be just his manager proving to WC just how keen he is.

I'm sure a whole heap of other people on here saw this too but it was reported on Channel 9 News tonight that Stenglein was clearing out his locker today and that he wants to go to West Coast-no mention of Fremantle.

The clearing out the locker made it seem/sound so final, I like Stenglein-I'll be sad to see him go.

I should have taunted him and called him a slimy traitor when I saw him in the supermarket a few weeks ago.

That'd get him!

Ha ha and maybe I should have used my feminine wiles on him when he was eyeing me out and then tried to pick me up a few weeks ago when I saw him out ;)

Well no, its quite a simple chain of logic really, hopefully even for someone as 'special' as your good self.

If a player is desperately home sick, ie, definitely wants to get back to his home state no matter what, then that would be his number 1 priority, yes?

Now they might have a personal preference like Stenglein but if they are so home sick that they feel they really have to go to their original state for family reasons etc, there's no way that preference is going to override homesickness.

If someone says 'oh god, I'm dreadfully homesick, i want to go back to state X, but only to play for club Y, otherwise I'm staying put', they obviously aren't that homesick at all. Actually, from the sounds of that article, I think it reads more like rather than being hugely homesick, Stenglein has seen the writing on the walls and just wants to get as far away as he possibly can from the rabble that Adelaide are becoming. Not sure West Coast can accomodate him, but good luck to him.

Lets get one thing straight here. Stenglein is NOT homesick and is going home for some personal reason of serious nature. Nothing to do with homesickness at all.

He is a top bloke and has stated a number of times that he absolutely loves the crows and his team mates. Moving back to Perth has nothing to do with homesickness.

And no I won't reveal those reasons. If anyone wants to dig deep they can find out.
