Im sorry but this needs its own thread and needs one ASAP

Enough is enough

If AFL can find 600 million for ****ing Gold Coast they can find some for well the actual players

We as fans need to demand better. This is just not on. Its a black stain on the game right now. It cannot contimue for even 1 day more. The top brass need to have some class and announce some funding for supporting current and ex players NOW.

Dancing around the subject and losing 1 more life cant happen.

FIX IT NOW!!!!

Mental health of ex players and concussion issues post career.

Brad Sheppard has to sue the Eagles to get support.... Its absolutely ridiculous

The game has the money to help, just too self-indulgent to do it.

The AFL needs to get its priorities right. Who in their right mind would want their son to play AFL after this week? You cant grow the game when your game has nothing to grow with.

If im a parent as of this week im pulling my son out of AFL immediately. The game isnt up to it right now. Im not committing my child to this life as wouldnt most parents im afraid

Whether anyone can admit it this is the worst week in AFL history. Its a absolute black stain on the game that needs to be fixed. We cant ignore it anymore

Is the suicide rate among ex afl players less or more than that of general males in society?

Seems that it’s definitely less for current players than the general population among males of ages 18-35.

Will we be happy if ex players suicide rates drop to 0 but it’s still rife in society
Not that simple as AFL never been honest about it... Its only last 5 years its been truly acknowledged.

Im certain its above normal society levels... It simply cannot be the case with the concussion issues the game has.

I think the wakeup call should have been in 2019. Why its 2025 and we dont have a exact source of whats spent, what isnt and then law suits to actually get support isnt on. We should demand better.

A class action suit is 100% unnecessary given the money the game has. Spend it on the right thing

In 2022 around 2,300 Aussie men committed suicide

I acknowledge I’m not keeping track but I know of 3 former afl players that have committed suicide ever.

Frawley plus 2 from the last few days

What you read in the news isnt some form of total count im afraid.

OP can tend to jump the gun and get carried away, recall a few months back on the club board trying to organise a fan protest for club training after the Liam Baker trade. But in essence I agree that more should be done in player welfare.

I think this issue of past players and their mental health would be best as a sports wide initiative. The tennis player Todd Reid is a haunting case I still think about a fair bit. NRL Coach Paul Green was also a big story recently, seemingly CTE-related.

Veteran suicides and adjustment to civilian life isn’t dissimilar either, some linked issues there.

I find it wild the AFL has a round for just about everything you can think of but then has pretty low awareness for things like mens health, mens mental health, prostate cancer, etc

Spud’s Game in Round 2 is about mental health and the Danny Frawley Centre has been setup to tackle some of the issues.

Would be nice to see the comp get around it a bit more, it’s definitely needed.

**** off. Dont bring your personal opinion on me to such a subject to downgrade its importance

Dangerfield needs to worry less about trying to extend his own career with shorter quarters and more about looking after players post career.

Is AFL unique with having so many issues with mental health post career, so many players come out of the game with no understanding how to manage life out of the bubble.. Perhaps in US sport they dont become pro until after college so have lived a bit and more able to manage, although in Euro Soccer many players are pro at 16.

You're assuming that the support isn't there already? The AFLPA has in-house psychologists and they work full-time hours in house to help both current and former players. Current players are also, obviously, covered by the provision of club psychologists. The AFL has also made significant rule changes - to the point of upsetting old-timers - to try and counter CTE.

That is, to my mind, exactly the kind of help I would want and expect if I were a player or an ex-player. I'm not sure what more you want.

Sometimes, unfortunately, you can't save everyone. At least make sure that the AFL and AFLPA aren't doing what you think they should before suggesting that they aren't looking after players.

I mean that just isnt true but ok. Ex players have no in house psychologists.

A half assed effort is completed. That we know of. A actual proper system. Nope. That we know of. The lawsuits state this.

Yes, they do. The AFLPA has in-house psychologists and they are freely available to ex-players.

This is literally from their website:
