How is it misleading? Do we not trust those bringing lawsuits to the AFL saying not enough is being done?

Not like its my own opinion that has no support from AFL players. Ex AFL players have mentioned it plenty of times. People just keep ignoring them... Maybe we should stop and telling them they have enough support? I think they know the truth more then you and I
So you opened with "the AFL must spend" and "not one one more". When it was posted there's psychs available you disparaged them as corporate EAP. That seems at best emotive.

Now you say we're ignoring players and we should listen to them, but you know I reckon the AFLPA does that, and I was already listening. Bit emotional again.

Maybe calm down, no need to respond, just have a think.

A half assed effort isnt a effort id live by

They are being ignored.... Why sue if you are happy? At what point do results matter too?

Calm down on people dieing? What the hell are you on about... Its a bit more serious then what you are suggesting here

I'm not sure getting angry and blaming the AFL, AFLPA or governments is particularly helpful.

The growth in funding and services related to mental health has been astronomical in recent years. It's very easy to go to a GP and get a mental health plan which gives significant funding for psychologist appointments. I'd bet the AFL and AFLPA have extra support for former players than the regular public has too.

The real challenge is getting people in need to use those services. Part of the issue for many people suffering from depression is that they internalise the problems and don't seek external help. Coming from a traditionally very blokey area like professional sport likely exacerbates that issue.

It isnt always enough but we kind of know they arnt even close to being near enough

The lawsuits speak for themselves. Perhaps on the evidence and the words of actual AFL players today we can just admit the big wigs are not doing enough? Why people want to pretend otherwise is beyond me

At the risk of trying to fact-check someone I know reacts badly to that…

The lawsuits relate to the treatment of concussion.

This thread seems to relate generally to the mental health and welfare of past players. Previous concussions may well be a factor in a lot of instances, but not always and not the only factor.

You’re conflating the two issues here. What do you want addressed by the AFL and the AFLPA exactly?

They are both in the same area isnt it? Medical support post retirement... Not only psychological also id say.

If the AFL is supporting the players post retirement in a proper way , why have a court case?

The court cases (Sheppard and Venables at least) relate to treatment of injuries suffered while playing. Without having seen the indorsements of claim, I assume they’re claiming lost earnings because their careers were shortened. Particularly Venables.

I doubt the AFL’s existing post-career welfare program covers that sort of thing.

Sheps includes medical bills. Venables got covered

It should cover that sort of thing...... No reason at all not too

Exactly...

If a consistent policy exists, why are there different situations?

People told me a program exists... yet 2 people get 2 different results....

Hard to comment without knowing the details. Maybe some were agreed between the parties in negotiations? Maybe there’s some disagreement about which medical expenses are covered?

Society doesn't care about your well-being if you're a Heterosexual Caucasian Male society only cares about what you can provide.
Not true, I was talking to society the other day and they specifically stated they care for you by name.

There are programs that exist already supported by the AFL and AFLPA.

Things that are available to past players that aren’t available to the wider community.

When it boils down to it, they are former employees - exactly what more do you want the league to do?

These things happen in life, it’s sad and when it happens close to together it can be alarming but ultimately, it’s a social problem, not an AFL problem - beyond the fact that it can be tough for young guys to adjust to life after football.

Here’s one program that exists

That hasnt been followed at all when it comes to Venables. Im 100% sure he got more then 8,000 bucks (what a stupid number)

This program exists but its inadequate and not always followed.... so probably needs changing as the law suits are basically requesting.

I wonder how much that program costs per year. Karmichael Hunt probably got paid more then that program

Im sorry but this needs its own thread and needs one ASAP

Enough is enough

If AFL can find 600 million for ****ing Gold Coast they can find some for well the actual players

We as fans need to demand better. This is just not on. Its a black stain on the game right now. It cannot contimue for even 1 day more. The top brass need to have some class and announce some funding for supporting current and ex players NOW.

Dancing around the subject and losing 1 more life cant happen.

FIX IT NOW!!!!

Not difficult to do. Make it like super guarantee. AFL takes 10% of player wages and puts that into a welfare fund. That way, it's money from players, for players
