Unfortunately the fact of the matter is that men will continue to commit suicide. I am not actually sure if preventative programs will have much impact if the decision is made within, i mean it’s 2025 and what went wrong with Troy Selwood? I’d suggest there’d be a lot of support available now, however it has clearly not been utilised or accessed. Why? The answers will lie close to Troy Selwood and his closest friends or family members.

I think sometimes when the decisions are made to commit suicide then there’s no going back. Stopping and preventing is incredibly difficult.

Mental health of ex players and concussion issues post career.

Brad Sheppard has to sue the Eagles to get support.... Its absolutely ridiculous

The game has the money to help, just too self-indulgent to do it.

The AFL needs to get its priorities right. Who in their right mind would want their son to play AFL after this week? You cant grow the game when your game has nothing to grow with.

If im a parent as of this week im pulling my son out of AFL immediately. The game isnt up to it right now. Im not committing my child to this life as wouldnt most parents im afraid

Whether anyone can admit it this is the worst week in AFL history. Its a absolute black stain on the game that needs to be fixed. We cant ignore it anymore

You have no information at all on what happened and just jump to conclusions.

All clubs have these problems but its pretty clear the Eagles are the clear club house leader so tidy up your own house and stop projecting onto the entire code.

Players are better looked after than most people in society, whilst playing and post career.

AFL refusing to provide information on what they do isn’t my fault. They can tell us more words than varying but they don’t. In the end if they were doing an adequate job why all the law suits. The evidence doesn’t stack up to the logic that they do a great job unfortunately

I’m not sure what job you have. Do you throw yourself head first into other people? End up with concussions which does bring on depression and have a job that endangers your health at such a level ? I doubt it . Different people have different responsibilities. If AFL want people to put their bodies on the line for them, they need to protect those bodies….

OP can tend to jump the gun and get carried away, recall a few months back on the club board trying to organise a fan protest for club training after the Liam Baker trade.
Fantastic stuff.

I'd feel the same way if my club tried to get Richmond spuds over, but then I wouldn't know if they did because I've been boycotting them since halfway through 2022.

They’re not refusing to provide information. You’re just not willing to look for it. And when others provide anything to you you act like it’s the entirety of the information on the subject and say it’s proof they’re doing bugger all.

As always, you’ve made up your mind and that’s it.

Please don't shut him down. It's great if you haven't experienced this but it isn't social media. Men are reaching out in massive numbers about this.
It's a footy site, the help is not here. There's links to help they can follow, but an unhealthy mind doesnt need to be sorting sensible stuff (such as you have posted) from trash like the OP offers , or the nitwits trying to make it about indigenous issues.

I'm not shutting him down, I'm offering meaningful advice. "I don't ask friends for help and women are the problem" is idiotic and it's wildly off topic. No place for it here and a person believing it should get real help not anonymous football opinions.

I gave you what I found after a brief search, twice. Each time it wasn’t enough. So I stopped. I’m not a complete mug.

I could write a 25,000 word treatise on the availability of support for former football players in Australia and you’d pick out one paragraph, act like it was the entire story and say it’s woefully inadequate.

I’m not here to play your game. I’m just here to point out how irrational you (always) are.

Not sure that Hunter’s in this category, for what it’s worth.

Definitely needs to be more awareness and advocacy by the AFL. Expanding the Spud game to a full round would be a good start.
Regardless of how Adam died, if you own a crack pipe in your 40's then you're probably not mentally sound. It is 💯 a mental health issue.

You gave no evidence. Just unquantifiable pamphlets you are pretending are a grand effort.

To me it seems like you care more about one upping me then well mental health and the subject at hand.

Sad effort really. Stop trying to justify a failing system cos you wanna one up me.

As opposed to your “evidence” which is basically “well if the system’s so great why are two players suing?”

We can’t all live in a lane where we hope and believe the best rather then the evidence in front of our eyes

I think I’ve said three times that more can be done. I’ll say it a fourth if you like: more can be done.

It's not just the afl. It's the whole of society. Governments underfund and poorly design mental health care systems and people fall through the cracks.

It’ll bury the game if a report is conducted that shows the impact of CTE contributing to suicide. If and when it comes out there will be a drop off in kids participating until the AFL totally reinvents the game to minimise head contact. It’ll literally take the AFL losing commercial benefit for them to change it. In 10 years there’ll be more players that have passed away, CTE should be front and centre of the game, and prevention should be prioritised at all costs. This could mean;

Backing into a pack - gone
Speccie / Hanger - gone
Bumping - gone

Absolutely riveted to see where this goes.
MMA is growing at a rapid rate and no one gives a shit about CTE.

Not the fans, not the people running it.

If you pursue a career in the AFL, you should do so expecting that you will get concussed 15-20 across the course of your career.

People don't have to pursue a career in the AFL if they don't want to.

Just like they don't have to in MMA.

Removing some of the unnecessary concussions like the Byron Pickett running past the ball and whacking blokes is a good move, but stuff like speccies to the head, even a lot of the tackles recently, is just over sanitising, watering down the product, all so it can remain on-brand as being as woke and presentable as possible.

Lost me at woke…..nothing to do with it at all

What a joke, AFL players already recieve 1000 % better support than anyone else who loses their job. If only it were front page news everytime Mike the former labourer committed suicide but no one cares. AFL players are our betters and deserve everything handed to them forever

One mind blowing fact is that Hunter was living with his mum in Withers, probably top 5 worst suburbs in all WA. I know cause I lived there from 18 to 22. Maybe the AFL could implement a rule that once you get a contract above a certain amount if you don't already own a house half of your salary has to go into paying off a house somewhere less drug addled than Withers.

The average price of a house in Withers is approximately what Hunter made every 3 months during his AFL days

I thought most if not all players had managers where financial advice was one of their responsibilities. In the end I guess people will forever be out there making not the greatest life choices
