I see the club finances totally linked to team sucess, in both directions.

We face two problems:

1) Team failure

2) Financial Disaster

One leads to the other.

We need to rebuild both finances and sucess.

How?

Sell the expensive players that are not going to get us to a premiership now anyway. Gasper, Richo for sure, then take your pick of Campbell and any other expensive but going nowhere player.

This gives us draft picks, and massive financial relief. We then wont lose the club, and can over a few years, re-stock with young players at our ease.

Why lose with great expenses for a few years, with only a few new players each year, rather than lose cheaply, and be rebuilding massively?

That would be my way of rebuilding.

Gas and Richo are both signed up til 2006. For another club to take them off our hands would require them to take on their existing contracts (that's not going to happen) or we would have to make up the shortfall (a la Holland).

That's why you should only sign the average player to 2 years at most and stars to 3. Not 5! One bad injury in the early-to-mid period of the contract and it becomes costly in more ways than one.

It depends on if they are on contracts or not. I think Miller said in an interview that nobody wanted to pickup their big name players as they would inherit their contracts.

Richmond just needs to tough it out, wait for the contracts to expire and either trade them then or put them on more realistic contracts for their ability.

You can't draft a whole bunch of players in one year, there is only so much talent going around in the draft in any given year. You just need to pick up 2 good players per year over say three years and that gives you the basis for a strong team.

Coughlan, Johsnon and Brown are good quality players that have come into the team but its the key position players that are struggling and the fringe players have not really stepped up to the level of they were expected to.

Tigers need to trim the fat and keep going with recruitment. Draft is like russian roulette, some big names do not make the grade and some nobodies turn into gold.

There should be nobody at the tigers earning mega bucks though, nobody is playing well enough to justify an excessive pay packet.

I think the AFL has allowed clubs to now pay less than 92.5% if they want, Richmond should just drop it back until you get players that are worth the extra amount. You could even pick up players who just nominate in the draft for an excess first year contract if you have a ton of room in your salary cap.

To ease the financial burden, I think the players should take a voluntary pay cut this year which is linked to where they end up on the ladder at the end of the season. If it is in the last four, it should be flat rate cut down to 92.5%. Performances like the last four weeks (Collingwood included - where they should have won by 70+ pts) do not deserve a 100% payment of the salary cap. If the paying patrons suffer, the players should also feel it in their hip pocket.

Here is my Tigers solution and answers regading some players already mentioned:

Dump Frawley, hire Wallace (3 year contract)

Trading:

You wont even get a pair of new footy boots for Richo these days were stuck with him.

Gaspar, well the eagles are after a backman, maybe we could get something for him but I doubt they would give us much. Eagles arent stupid when it comes to trading but to play with his brother on the injury bench could entice gaspar back to perth.

Campbell, who knows, last time he put himself on the market no one wanted him, possibly the kangaroos did, yet we still paid him more $$$$ to stay. I doubt we would get anything for him anymore, plus he is on the vet's list, keep him for 1 more season.

Bowden, again maybe Collingwood might be fooled into snaring him to bolster their midfield.

Hall to Sydney, let him go, hell I'd give him away for a 3rd round pick (father son pick could be used for this)

Rodan, Im a bit disappointed with him, Essendon maybe, if anyone can make an underachiever into a player its Sheedy. I think they would be willing to pay a price for him too could be a steal for the tigers.

Most importantly, keep all our draft picks DO NOT trade any of them away!!!!

Dump:

Houlihan, Hilton, Hyde, Nicholls & Pettifer

Retire: D Kellaway, Rogers

So the 2 players we are stuck with is Richo and Campbell IMO, they are not worth trade bait anymore.

There was a rumour on SEN the other day that Greg Miller isn't too keen on Terry Wallace after the way he left Footscray, and is leaning towards Rodney Eade instead. I'd rather have Eade if it came down to it, but they'll both have been out of football for a while if we chase them at the end of the year.
