The comment Roo's made about The Ressie's not putting enough pressure on the Senior's is an absolute joke!

Roo's said after the loss to Melbourne that he was going to give his "seniors" a chance to regain some form...yes it was a little though because it was against one of the best teams in the competition and yes they did well even though it was a 53 point loss!

But for someone like me who has seen the ressie's along with Grim, Liz and others will know first hand how hard the reserves have been pushing to put pressure on the seniors! Look at the best's for Christ Sakes I'm pretty sure you will see the same names pop up week in week out!

Maybe it was aimed at certain Reserve players who the Coach wants to see improvement from before he'll bring them into the seniors. Its one thing for a certain group of players to be making the Best list each match, but if they aren't in a position to push for senior position because they are a ruckman, KP Defender or Rookie Listed player then what good is that list for other than showing what depth we might have at certain position in the future when injuries strike.

I was pretty sure at the start of the year that this was to be a development year for some players and the team!

Smith has become one of the better lock down taggers we have, Hannerbury is on pace to win the Rising Star and we have given debuts to Jetta, Rohan, and TDL, more games to Meredith and brought in from other clubs players like McGlynn, Kennedy and Mumford who can become 8-10 year players for this club. Plus Grundy and LRT have become a force in the KP Defender slots, So I would call that a good year develoment wise when we were expected to drop way down the ladder. Yes White has been a disappointment but so has the entire forward line without Bradshaw in the team. We have been able to look at the present and the future at the same time. What has killed us has been the injuries.

But im sick off Roo's naming kids on the extended bench and then not playing them, Im pretty sure Roo's comments would be along the lines of "Well done Sam you have showed us what you can do but we want you to go back and do it again and then maybe you can play" Geeze louise just give the kid a go naming them and then dropping them has got to be such a buzz kill before you know it the kid is injured and his year is over!

If the kid gets injured in the reserves after being named on the extended bench that isn't the coaching staffs fault, thats called bad timing or even bad luck. When the team is name each Thursday they have to name 25 players and I'm betting by that stage the 22 is pretty much set, so the 3 players that miss out would be told this and told what they have to work on. Its not Paul Roos being a "buzz kill" its Paul Roos doing his job when we play on Sunday's.

You know what if Pat or Lewis did choose to move onto another club then i wish them all the best of luck because these kids have so much potential it deserves to be shown!

Not many of our Reserves players have moved on to other AFL clubs. Its our Senior players that have. So if they wanted out, we would get something in return via a trade or if they were delisted I doubt many club would give them a second look going by the history of our delistings. But I doubt this is even the case, Veszpremi is subject to a Big Footy rumour (and you know how much notice I pay to those) and LJ is a Key Position player growing and developing in his second year after missing most of his first year with a foot injury. You can kind of see why they are taking time with him.

The same goes for Currie I'm sick of people saying that we should trade him off! WHAT THE HELL we havn't even seen him play! NAB cup was so long ago he's worked hard since then! Just play him like they have done with Pyke (i do not give a crap how Pyke has come along in leaps and bounds) You have to play him to see what he's got to offer if he turns out to be a dud then move him on! Just because we have 3 ruckmen ahead of him doesn't mean he can't play! You know he can kick a bag if he goes forward and actually could be more decent than Jesse at times & FYI COACHES JESSE IS NOT A RUCKMAN!

Why do you even take notice of what is "suggested" on here. Currie has been injured twice at the wrong time when close to a senior call up and Pyke has become our second ruckman in Seaby's absence. He get a game at some point but when is the question.

The Reserves sit i think 24 points clear of the 2nd placed team Ainslie with only 2 losses and a Draw! The Ressies arn't winning these game by 10-15 points they are smashing teams by 40+ points so i guess they must be working hard! People say the Canberra comp is soft and that the Ressies should be playing in the VFL or in a Northern Comp or something and sometimes i agree, but travelling too and from canberra can be tough and some of players in the canberra comp are ex afl players and footy isn't an easy sport these kids come off spent, injured and sore!

Soph, the lack of quailty in the ACTAFL can't be question, sure the travel factor wouldn't be easy. But if we were in the VFL the travel would be harder and the amount of current AFL and ex AFL players increases. I don't question they don't try hard and that they are in the ACTAFL for the foreseeable future, but quaility wise it isn't the best comp for the Reserves.

I think that if a senior player drops off in form over a few weeks they should be dropped and have a spell in the ressies and im not talking about the Brett Meredith's and the Lewis Jetta's cause lets face the truth the "senior players" arn't going to be around forever!

No. If ANY player in the Senior 22 has their form drop off then they get dropped. So special cases.

If Currie, Vesz, Reid, Johnston, Dennis-Lane etc don't get a game among themselves ill go support the Suns coz least their club is about the development of their kids for the future!

Dumbest statement ever. Of course the Suns are about the development of their Kids because thats all they have got at the moment - KIDS.

Folks, remember that the focus especially for last month has been to win enough games to make finals. A few more bad losses, and other results, might change that? ...but they are still a chance!:thumbsu:

Sure some could cynically argue it's all about Roosy and Kirky wanting to retire that way?

But the P Roos era culture, that has taken years to develop, is win any way you can... and don't ever give up. Also only bring in youth slowly when proven ready... to grab their potential ongoing chance with both hands.

It is no good now making a suble statement ..like... 'OH well we give up we'll play the kids'. Wrong message!...to deliver to newbies

2005 Four senior players from memory Kirk Kennelly Hall? Barry all had major surgery almost immediately after GF .. they carried major injuries. BUT to win (luckily a Flag) most times a 80% right (or even less) experienced gun is better under pressure than a 100% cherry ripe newbie He might be flashy, and seem good, but rarely can immediately cope under extreme pressure.

Eg Lewis Johnson... FFS!!!... Jesse White can barely get a kick or goal. Do you REALLY reckon LJ would be playing ressies if Roos thought he could easily almost certainly do better???

It would not surprise that incompetitive training drills LJ V Jesse occurs!
Thats where he proves himself not....in the bloody ACTAFL!

Sure ...Vezs ...is a mystery to me too.

PS Bedford

Love to send you a PM with the 'mail'
But it works like this.

An insider tells an outsider a secret. The outsider inadvertantly blabs hint but not the detail. Another then wants to know. PM him with request please keep secret!. He has beer tells 'connected' mate but says keep secret. On and on the chain goes until it ends up in the HUN and on TV. Boom!

Just open mind and consider the possibility it is true;).Would that change your criticism?? Maybe slightly..but me thinks not much anyway!:o

We are 8th and have come off two bad weeks. You'd think we are 14th reading the Swans board atm.

There are 4 games left, it's not going to make or break the youngsters in the reserves if they don't play again. Getting finals experience into Hanners, Jetta could be our last chance for 5+ years. It's stupid that you want to see something that is 100% certain to happen next year (blood youngsters) over something that might not happen for a long time (finals action).

Roos picks the best 22, he has done a good job since he started, why doubt him for the last few weeks? Just accept he might not like Vez. A personality clash is all it could be.
Well if a personality clash is all it is then Roos is being unprofessional and selfish for not playing him.A coach that is going to be replaced in about 4-6 weeks has no right to hinder that player or the clubs development by taking a set against him and not playing him because of a personality clash.Personality clash my a**e.Has been a magnificent coach and advertisement not only for the club but AFL in general but make no mistake Roos has always disguised his arrogance well and and his stubborness has been on display for all to see with his refusal to change a now outdated and sometimes excruciatingly painful gameplan.Played under Eade so these traits dont surprise.Hope Longmire is his own man and has not just been a puppet during Roos jobs for the boys tenure.Less said the better about that though

Why can't it be a personality clash? Maybe it's ability or Vez isn't meeting standards in the reserves, but I wouldn't rule out Roos simply not liking him. Voss shipped out Macdonald from Brisbane even though many thought he was very good last year. Mark Williams loved Motlop, but he is probably going to be traded now that Primus has come in. Vez could play every game next year because Longmire rates him and likes him both as a player and person.

Even playing junior footy, you have coaches who like you more than others, which gives you more confidence and opportunities. It happens in every sport.

The aim for Johnston was to get one or two senior games this year... He did miss the whole of last year with that foot injury and because of this the club haven't risked him putting on more weight just in case the injury reoccurs so his ability is fantastic (AFL Level) but his body isn't quite there yet... Either way I expect him to get one or two games before the year is out...

With Reid he was drafted as a development player, He had fantastic athleticism (Ryder like leap) and his strength is decent but not AFL ready... But his football mind wasn't quite there yet, He is prone to making incredible errors and can be out smarted by opponents, Which will be exploited by the better AFL players... He has come on in leaps and bounds this year and has performed above everyone's expectations but he is not going to be a ruckman at AFL level, and I feel he has only been playing there in the reserves to get a better feel for the game, He may get one game towards the end of the year but it will be for his development only, Give him a couple more years before he can hold down that position and make it his own.

And Veszpremi he had too much weight on him at the start of the season and lost his speed and zip (not fat just too much muscle...) Not sure how long it would take for him to get back to his best... But because of this it would surely of wasted allot of his pre season and his been injury prone enough as it is... He is contracted until the end of next year so it really wouldn't surprise me if his instructions were just to run yourself into form in the reserves and look to playing 20 games next year in the seniors.

Now my turn to rant.

To all those who think they can piss on the reputation of OUR PREMIERSHIP COACH in his last year I say this.... Have some respect for a man who knows his footy and his team A BIT BETTER THAN YOU DO.

If I hear one more BF 'expert' say he or she knows better than Roos or start pissing on Horse before he's even coached a single game, I'll bloody well reach through the Internet*, rip out your gall bladder** and eat it live on webcam during half-time of the Hawks game.

Now, now ... use your "inside" voice.

I found myself wondering today at what point Cats fans will turn on Thompson once their golden era begins to wane. It'll be absolutely stupid, but it will happen.

Sorry Bedders but you'll have to insult Roos a lot worse than that before I'll consent to eat any of your organs.

Good post Soph. But it all end up in the Canberra league basket. ALL Melb clubs have affiliate clubs, and the clubs can drop senior players into this league, knowing that they will
come up against quality senior players who have been dropped from other clubs. If we drop
out of form players on our team, they end up playing in the Canberra league. No disrepect
to this league, but it is not an ideal situation. The coaching staff have a tough job trying
to decide who is ready to step up to Afl level. The remedy, get out of the Canberra league,
the reality,we cant afford it,unless the Afl comes to the party!

Difference is that we know he is going at the end of the year. So complaining about him when he has 4, maybe 5 games left is ridiculous.

I agree with AG, bungee, robbie, jmoore etc.

This year was always going to be a development year. We knows Roos is going, and we always knew this would be a transition year.

Thankfully (our luck!) we had a heap of injuries which has forced the club to give games to players that otherwise would not have had a lot of opportunities. We will see the benefits of this in the near future.

Johnston should look towards 2011. After a couple of nasty injuries (one of which was before the ankle) he needed to get himself through the season. His body looks like it is holding up now. No need to rush him, nor Reid.

I don't really understand the fuss? I knew from the start our the year we were not a realistic premiership chance. I am happy with the amount of "kids" that have been given gametime. I would still like to see us somewhat competitive.

Where did i complain, i want to make the finals and love Roos, but he has lost the edge. He always has been a great spin doctor, but arrogant, i never thought so till now and thats what happened to baldy at the Swans.

I'm not having a go at you. I don't know why I even quoted your post. Sorry.

Just on this. You were complaining about players like Nick Smith, Jesse White, Heath Grundy and Ed Barlow.

Three out of those four players are now playing regular seniors and will be a good part of the next 10 years at the club. Who's to say that the way the development is done isn't working?

Problem with supporters is it's all NOW NOW NOW. Especially for guys like Sam Reid and Lewis Johnston, who may be doing well footy wise but need to improve fitness and strength, it's going to be no good for their development to be smashed week in week out in seniors by stronger, bigger blokes.

Zac Dawson at Hawthorn would be a good example of what could happen (until he got a lucky break at St Kilda and somehow found his confidence).

I,like a lot of us knew that season 2010,was going to be tough,at least a mid table finish
We were after all in a re-building phase. We had to re-build without resorting to tanking,
which we could not afford to do. So we recruited well, with an eye on the future, and an
eye on Gws,whos presense has been thrust upon us by the Nazis at the Afl,instead of a team in Tassie. We started like a house on fire, but it ended with injuries to key players
and the wheels fell off, team structure was lost, and we had to draft in younger players
as replacements. This has given us a look at our promising ressies, although not as many
as some on here would like. What i am saying is that, i pencilled in 2 yrs mid table as the
re-build period. To make the finals this year would be a bonus, not only for us fans, but for experience for the younger players.
