Just wondering if there are any epic songs out there since 2000. I couldn't think of any that remind me of the brutal epicness of these from pre 2000s

November Rain
In the Air Tonight
Stairway to Heaven
Evie
Bohemian Rhapsody.

Exadctly; music has lost its way, like a lost puppy
I disagree. I think music's in a great place. The ease with which people can record and release these days has meant lots more talented musicians and songwriters have been able to get their stuff out there than they would have previously. It's great.

But music today is merely thrown upon the vacuous souls who listen to whatever they're told to listen to. Why is it, that Coldplay now produce crap in contrast to their earlier stuff.

Music has become more about performance, and less about what music actually represents, and thats to produce sound.

That's all opinion, not fact. You say that like up until ~15 years ago every band got better as they went on. It's not the case. Gunners, the Stones just to name two. Their early (relative in regards to the Stones) stuff was great but then fell away. Sometimes that happens nowadays too. Only these days we're exposed to MUCH more music than we would've been back then. It's the nature of the beast.

There's always been some artists more interested in the performance side, and there's always been some more interested in the songwriting/sound aspect.

I simply find now that I don't have time to explore new stuff. There is so much out there. Old stuff is easy - there are lists, bands have reputations, really easy to hone in on what you like.

When I was younger I could go to concerts, listen to radio, read magazines and stay in touch with all the current acts. Can't now. It's a bit like good tv series. I won't watch them when they're on. No time. Just wait until they're finished and then binge watch the whole thing when I get some free time. I'll catch up on this decade's music next decade.

Plenty of great music around, just not in the "mainstream"
Taylor Swift
Muse
Arctic Monkeys
QOTSA
Black Keys
Arcade Fire (they're probably mainstream now)
Slash

That's just off the top of my head

Problem is the mainstream don't play the good Sh!t at all these days, giving people the impression that music is bad. It's just the mainstream that went bad, music has always been great..

LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
Queens of the Stone Age - I Think I Lost my Headache
Walkmen - The Rat
Outkast - Roses
Tame Impala - Desire Be, Desire Go
Super Furry Animals - Receptacle for the Respectable
The Strokes - Reptillia
The Killers - Spaceman
The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love
The Shins - Turn on Me
Interpol - Slow Hands
The Dandy Warhols - Talk Radio
Manic Street Preachers - 1985
Spoon - Don't make me a Target

Taylor swift, Carly Rae Jepson, Bieber for example have all made albums that have seemed to cross over into the "indie" scene now.

Intelligence is probably the wrong word but I'd say pop music has definitely improved.

People change, and I've tried hard to soften you...

But really, of course there'll be kids born in 2000s jealous of the things we've seen.

Be thankful and excited regarding the things you hear and experience. It'll seem naff now, and some might seem naff in the future, but the good stuff will be still be good. Pop music is going through a change but there are still so many melodic tunes since 2000 – Nelly Furtado, Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone, Mr. Brightside, Taylor Swift, and about a hundred good indie artists will make up the bedrooms and club floors of the future. You can't help being where you are – but one day people will give anything to be where you were.

You could argue pop music has also become more intelligent in some ways too.

I don't think this is true. Certainly producing music has become more sophisticated, but not more intelligent and lyrics in a marketing sense are still cheesy and predictable..

80s/90s had way more hits that were at least raw and organic sounding in almost every genre, better guitar playing, better vocalists, better songs!!

But the 80s/90s didn't have genres crossing into each other like these days. However what's the use of trying to innovate crossing over genres if the songs are bad??

I don't think you can say that Bieber releasing a new album that contains a few songs that kinda sound indie inspired means all that much of anything.

Sighting Taylor Swift is also a bit redundant, she has an ok album with 1989 but really she was chosen to be marketed to the stratosphere..has some catchy tunes, but she's not Madonna.

Technically Courtney Barnett's latest album is better than both Justin Bieber and Taylor Swifts albums. Courtney is from Melbourne and crosses from REM, Nirvana, The Fall and indie rock, but the album is a gem.

Why not market that album instead??

It has lots of catchy tunes, potential hits..

The problem is that grass roots bands no longer are promoted, that's a real problem.

I'm listening to The Fall as I read this....interesting.

Yeah, good band, Courtney Barnetts albums kinda sounds a bit like The Fall...

Anyway, her album is still one of the best of the year, easily..a huge seller worldwide as well.

I will drink to her and celebrate her rather than Bieber or swift..
