I must admit I have no idea why she is so popular.

I can understand why she wouldn't appeal to everyone, her unique deadpan vocal style is bound to put some people off. Once you look past that though there's a lot to like, though I must admit her work is more than a little patchy at this point. Personally I think Avant Gardnener is sheer brilliance, it spoke to me the first time I heard it and I immediately found myself on youtube playing it repeatedly. The lyrics are fantastic and that part of her craft is definitely the strongest, she's just so clever with her words. Personally I find her more grungy songs a little harder to enjoy, Pedestrian at Best does nothing for me but songs like Deprestion, An Illustration of Loneliness and Elevator Operator show what she's capable of. She really shines when it's just her and a guitar IMO.

I'm really looking forward to what she'll produce once she matures a little as an artist.

It's natural for people to think that the 'best' era for music was the one that was current when they were in their teens/early twenties. The one that sound-tracked those first love affairs, first drug experiences, whatever. I expect for most users of this forum, that would be the 90s. For me it's the early 70s (!)

But I am firmly convinced that there's plenty of good and innovative music being made nowadays in all genres. The likes of Soundcloud and Bandcamp have been a boon to many up-and coming musicians, enabling them to get their music in front of the public.

But going back to the OP. I do tend to think that the term 'epic' songs rather puts me off. Just like 'anthems'. It does tend to bring to mind the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody or Dire Straits or Dark Side of the Moon, records I've heard so many times I'd gladly never hear them again.

I like maybe 1% of main stream music these days. I dont associate with a particular era, rather music that makes me feel something. I think m83 are pretty epic, but id say the epic of the epic is something like the 1812 overture.

Relatable, simple and at times amusing lyrics. Decent instrumentation.
She toured the double EP very hard, and has a good live show. There was a lot of anticipation coming into the album, which ended up being a better, more cohesive version of the EPs. She has then toured the album hard all across Australia, Europe and the states

She's popular because she's worked so hard to create a buzz and has been able to live up to the hype for those that wanted have wanted her to

I don't why either, but I'm actually really happy that she is. I like that her quite simple music with pretty obscure lyrics have caught over with fans across the world.
I'm a bit of both. I like the way she is down to earth at least when I met her some time ago, and that it's music that isn't soulless and commercial. But honestly, I listen to it currently and it's so boring, uninteresting and flat that it's mind boggling the mass appeal she has. Without repeating current topics here she definitely would have connections to make a mark. Her style is a dime a dozen.

Courtney's album has some great songs in it though, you can't just dismiss it like that...it's not hard to see why the album did so well..depreston and Kim's caravan are gems..

I wouldn't call her boring uninteresting or flat at all...

She seems to have influences and a musical style of the fall vocally, which is the opposite of boring. The musicianship on her latest album is exciting, very nirvana style guitars on pedestrian at best and great lyrics..

She seems to have also adapted the raw stylings of bob dylan, paul kelly, the drones and is very chill like a j mascis ....

Geez I could think of thousands of mainstream artists that I'd classify as boring, Courtney isn't one of them..

Not to mention the last two singles being as catchy as it gets!!

I love The Fall. And I wish this women the best. But just isn't my cup of tea.

I cringe when I go back over old posts.

Alt Rock, Progressive rock, Black/Death Metal all have incredible and epic songs. I think once I delved into Spotify I discovered so much new music.

Kamasi Washington, Porcupine Tree, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, A lot of prog rock stuff.

It's all out there.
