Courtney Barnett got big from being a bartender and knowing heaps of people and from being artsy and just about exhausting her friend list in the two other cities she's lived in (the fact she never represents her birth town of Hobart is really poor, too – that state needs it). You just sound like an indie cindy Mootsy – like you're holding onto something that's no longer there. Madonna's last good song was ten years ago and sampled ABBA. I know Taylor Swift won't have her longevity, but that's for exploring in a Gen Y think piece, but the reality is... Swift is bigger and a better current song writer than her.

And no matter who says they're right... we both like those pop artists for themselves and their zeitgeist. We both enjoyed them and will until we die. You can't hate that mate.

You're right, I'm an indie rocker. Which means I do have a narrow view on pop music as I tend to avoid a lot of it, but it's because I don't like what I hear from modern radio stations..

So my view is warped and a bit narrow..I agree.

I don't think it's bad that I have stayed a rock/indie rock fan, it's just how I'm wired and always will be. But a great song is a great songs no matter what.

I listen to loads more indie music than pop stuff however a good song is a good song. I like me some new school tay Tay and Biebs, Beyoncé makes some super stuff and I don't mind some Calvin Harriss.

Lyrics aren't the be all and end all as to whether a song is intelligent or not. There's some amazing indie songs that don't necessarily have amazing lyrics.

I used to be narrow minded like you but you'll be better for it in allowing yourself to love pop.

PS Courtney Barnett is horrible to listen to but you are welcome to enjoy her. Don't understand the love for her personally.

That makes sense. But if you know your not going to like it your brain is closed off subconsciously. I don't need to taste different wines to know I won't like them, I hate all wine.

Yeh I am still like that with metal. It's one genre I just can't get into. I just struggle with it. I just don't understand how people find it appealing. At least with pop music, there is some melody or catchiness.

Meaningless IMO if I don't find it interesting or can even slightly relate to the song/musicians. Same as finding women attractive, I don't feel anything for the majority of so called stunners like models and actresses because its just another world to me. I like it when there is no gap between the artist and the audience, no putting people up on pedestals. I guess that comes from growing up interested in underground punk/post punk kind of stuff. I've changed quite a bit but some of those opinions remain.
