Surprisingly dour game with both teams with a more cautious approach. Felt all it would take was one goal either way.

Phenomenal to finally defeat City after all this time. Lovely time for Martinelli to come back into the team. Controlled those last few minutes very well and thankfully now the Oliver bottle job in the first half won’t dominate the narrative coming out of this match.

City live an incredibly charmed life. How Kovacic wasnt sent off is anyones guess.

He was a very lucky boy. I reckon the first foul was somewhere between a yellow and red. But not enough there for VAR to say to Oliver to have a look at the monitor. The second foul should have been another yellow. I can only assume that Oliver didn't have a good view of it. VAR can't rule on yellow cards unless it's an upgrade to a direct red.

Oliver either didnt have a good view of it or his back pocket was stuffed full of cash so it was difficult for him to move to get into a good position to "view" it. ;)

It was referred to VAR and they didnt do anything. I think because VVD blocks it with his thigh and it bounces up and hits his hand so accidental.

A deflection clearly makes no difference to the ball touching a hand/arm that is clearly extended away from the body and/or above the shoulder.

No idea with the constant changing of the handball rule but common sense prevailed. Nobody wants to see pens given for accidental contact with a hand.

Please don't go down the Zidane98 conspiracy theory rabbit hole. Not every bad decision against Liverpool means the officials have been paid and there should be a replay.

Liverpool?

Common sense doesn't come into it. The rules of the game determine that an accidental handball inside the box is a penalty if the arm is clearly away from the body, even if there has been a deflection off the player's body.

Did you even read the link you posted?

In this case the deflection made a massive difference.

Yes. Did you?

It's handball if the arm is extended outside the body. It doesn't matter if the ball makes a deflection and touches that extending arm.

a player will be penalised for handball if:
  • The hand/arm is clearly away from the body and outside the "body line".
  • The player clearly leans into the path of the ball.
  • The ball travels some distance.
  • The ball touches a hand/arm that is clearly raised above the shoulder.
  • The player falls and the hand/arm is extended laterally or vertically away from the body.
  • A deflection clearly makes no difference to the ball touching a hand/arm that is clearly extended away from the body and/or above the shoulder.
  • Immediately after touching the ball with the arm, even accidentally, the player scores a goal or creates a goal-scoring opportunity.

Yeah I remember in our first game back in the Prem Pool were awarded a penalty when the ball deflected off Koch’s thigh (not to be confused with Koch off the thigh …boom-tish!) into his arm which was just away from his body. Wondered then why it was awarded as it was kicked quite close to Koch.

He was reaching to get to it before Gross pulled him down, there was nothing that said he was going to get a shot off on goal, especially with the right back coming in.

Liverpool fans and knowing the rules, like Diaz and scoring sitters. It's the same all over the internet like normal with the moronic Pool fans diving off the deep end into conspiracies like always. Only team that ever has 50/50s go against them.
Gross pulled him down = penalty EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Are you seriously proposing that referees should adjudicate if a player was likely to score or not when awarding a penalty? How likely do they need to be? 80%? 90%?

Do you understand what 'makes no difference' means? The ball changed direction. So the deflection made a difference.
