Toast Esava

Aliir was a factor in the first quarter when some aspects of our game were alright but the entry inside 50 was horrible. Then after quarter time everything was horrible. Bringing in someone to play the Shane Kersten role is not a priority. Best way to deal with an intercepting defender is to not kick it straight to him. Hawkins, Cameron, Rohan and occasionally Dangerfield and Duncan is plenty in terms of threats.

Don't agree. Since GWS beat us the template is set, flood back super hard and run the ball out of defence. Geelong don't have anyone to break a pack and the midfield won't follow you out that hard.

To deal with flooding we need someone who can create some chaos.

They weren't the first team to play that way against us. If teams try that without pressure up the field we usually pick our way through, however boring it is to watch. Yes if we attack with aimless high balls all game we won't win but with Geelong that's usually a secondary symptom. The issue against Port wasn't getting bounced out of defence so much as getting overwhelmed and outworked though the corridor and losing control of the ball on half back. Again Aliir's most influential quarter was the first, which was also our best. Of his intercepts at least two that I can think of were just uncontested marks from horrible kicks. And as good as he was in that quarter we still got some decent looks (three marks inside 50 to Hawkins and Cameron a quarter is a return you'll usually be happy with).

Esava makes the high ball inside 50 a bit more effective but we don't want to play that way anyway. Against a flood I'm just hoping for some better ball use.

2022 in my eye is make or brake for Esava... will be 24 next year, 6 years in the system.... I really really really hope he becomes the player we all want him to, but he can't play 1 good game in 8 matches... We can't keep making excuses for him, it's time Esava becomes more of a consistent player...

I hope he proves me wrong but I don't think he will...

Problem is if you get rid of him who do you replacevhim with? We have virtually no talent under 28.

I think he'll repay the faith. Can't expect a breakout year. But gradual improvement - yes. Once Hawkins retires, maybe in another 2 years?, I'd be looking for him to step up into the key forward role and grab it with two hands.

As long as he improves by at least 10% that'll be a pass for me.
A goal a game average, 3-4 marks a game. Get to another 2-3 contests and make a difference.
More importantly for me, is to play more in the ruck. He's gotta get a bigger tank.
I'll take 1 in 4 good games TBH. With more improvement the following years.
*FWIW I think that leg break cost him 18 months of development.

This.
I think he's currently caught between a rock and a hard place. If he could fix up his disposal use, he could be a very good key defender but so far throughout his career, he's looked comfortable forward. Obviously can't happen with Hawkins and Cameron there for the meantime.

I would like him to play all of the year in the VFL. He needs development and the VFL is his best option to gain the experience.

If he plays AFL, he is forced into bit roles like a decoy, or just there to compete, or crash a pack, or get smashed in the ruck etc.

He is our replacement for Hawkins so not needed for another 12 months so the focus should be on his development, getting him ready to go once Hawkins retires. Ceglar/Stanley are better ruck combo for this year.

If he can learn to dominate in VFL, that’s great. Otherwise delist may be the outcome.

Contracted until end of 2023. He is going nowhere

Surely with the great Wells at the helm of our recruiting this statement is incorrect.

The man picks diamonds out of the rough, he finds the needle in the haystack. He finds the vacant car park at the local aldi on a Saturday morning. He finds honesty in the Victorian government. The guy is a genius.

The players that are around the key 28 year old mark like Murdoch, Kersten, Hambling, Thurlow, Lang, these guys should all be playing at their peak now.

In Wells I trust.

Go catters.

I would think we will replace Hawkins with Dangerfield FF, play the last 2 or 3 years as a Full Forward

You must have more faith in him than me

I agree Danger makes a good deep forward, but at this point I'm not even convinced he'll play on longer than Hawkins will, especially if the run of injuries continues. Hawkins is still in almost career best form.
