The bloke is also a dime a dozen for his freakishly athletic abilities. He is an incredible athlete and Naitanui/buddy like with his movements.

'dime a dozen' suggests that his abilities are quite common - I think you mean the opposite! Rare as hen's teeth!

He really isn't, Rioli takes that mantle with Bontempelli not far behind him.

Definitive.
Once he's lost the guys that allow him to front run he can't even keep pace with Murdoch.

Coaching staff need to be smarter with his workload during games, when the game has been there to be won he's been out there absolutely stuffed both games, bench him more often early in games so he can win it for us when it counts in last quarters.

He shows some real promise once he builds endurance he could be a good player. But please stop playing him in the ruck.

Nuh Scott will keep throwing him to the ruck till he gets injured, for goodness sake bring back Smithy and balance the team.
Sav's a big talent worth protecting.

I was very happy that he kicked the setshot in front ... he is kicking it better this year than last..it shows that he put some work into it which is great. And I think we looked better with him in the ruck , than when Blitz was in there. Perhaps we should let Blitz settle somewhere.. and let Sav give or ruck a rest. Still raw but more potential than a lot we have had recently

Thoughts on his potential long term role?
I think we may have a real chance at a star ruck with Sav. He has the leap, he has the body and the height and he has the reach, he also seems to be an ok tap considering his experience.
Someone similar (but at the same time completely different) to Ottens in that he could play ruck and rest forward to genuinely contribute on the scoreboard.
I wouldn't at all be surprised if by this time next year he's taken over as number 1 ruck.

His ruck work is only good when he uses his vertical leap to get over the top of the opposing ruck, when it's body on body he gets absolutely destroyed at the moment, first ruck within a year is a huge call.

I agree but it's hard to look passed Nic Nat who was very similar at the same stage of his career, Sav doesn't have the experience or strength yet but as you said he has that leap already, that you can't teach, the rest you can.
It is a huge call, it just seems to me the MC aren't sold on Smith as ruck (I reckon he's a bit soft, goes up against a physical ruck and goes to water far too easily) and Stanley is nowhere near it, they might bite the bullet with an eye on long term.

For the love of god keep him in the forwards to support Hawkins and Menzel

Finally find our answer and you want to throw him in the ruck, he’s a good resting ruckman but he will be a better forward imo

Impressive kid - seems to relish the contest and hurt two eagles - one in a marking contest and one in a tackle in quick succession.
Whilst his leap is huge he's too short at 197cm to be a first ruck.
However his positioning as a forward was impressive , he was out of position a couple of times but largely was there right at the contest. - great start.
Definitely something to work with , love his athleticism and enthusiasm

Smith needs to take more marks and have an influence around the ground, when he's first Ruck the opposition Ruck ends up with 20 possies and a couple goals far too often.

This.. I cringed every time Hawkins spent time in the ruck and now do the same with Rat.

I have no objection to him taking some ball ins in F50 but only as a chop out.

His leap and leading skills/marking must be preserved for F50 - Hawkins must be FIRM seeing him take opposition defenders attention away.

GO Catters

The club just need to pumping quality coaching into him and lets just see what we have. I quite like the little runs he is having in the ruck atm but really looks all over the shop at times. He would seem to fit what the clubs wants a competitive mobile athletic strong body who could add marking power around the ground. The counter for this role is he needs to keep developing as mostly a forward , and while Hawk is there to take the number 1 guy he should be able to have an influence. Either or both roles ..we should be spending the money and having an expert coach him. Im not sure who id get him ..Nick Riewoldt or DermieB etc. someone who has a great deal of knowledge playing that KPF role.

Id also like the club to find out what North have done with MakakDaw .. and not do that.

Didn't Richo spend some time with Hawkins a couple of seasons back?

Don't understand all this talk about him being a ruck. Everything i've seen of him that's jumped out at me of him being a special player have all been him playing as a key forward. Lets not stuff him around and play him out of position. We've done it a number of times over the years. Hawkins in the ruck, Ryan Gamble in defense, Mitch Brown in defense, Motlop in the middle. Just play them in their natural position FFS. If I see him starting to look more like a Ruck than a Key Forward I'll change my tune but at this stage he looks to have a heap of potential as a Forwad.

That being said what is the more crucial position in current day footy? Ruck or Key Forward?

We had those super skilled players that could play anywhere. None moreso than Bartel. Our players today don't have the same skills. But we persevere, and it looks ugly.
