Well us Sydney fans would LIKE to think we are at least a chance on Sunday at Colonial.
But the recent history is pretty bleak for the Red and Whites ...
Not counting Ansett Cup and practice games, the last time Sydney beat Essendon in Melbourne was in 1989.
Round 12 at Windy Hill (yes it really was a long, long time ago) Sydney won a low scoring slog 55 to 50.
The last time Sydney beat Essendon at all was Round 15 1997 at the SCG when a Mark Bayes soccer kick from out of a dense pack secured a late goal and the Swans got up in a thriller 79-78.
Before that was the 1996 Preliminary Final and previously that season Essendon beat Sydney by a handy 3 goals in front of nearly 70,000 at the MCG and that followed on from a thrilling 90-90 draw at the SCG.
So, in a nutshell, Sydney have not beaten Essendon in Melbourne for 12 years and have not beaten Essendon at all for 4 years.
These are bluddy long droughts I must say, and I think the Swans are at least an outside chance on Sunday - but geez history is certainly against us.
cheers
