Any of you guys rememebr Round 4 1998 at Waverley. It was the day Freo beat us, believe it or not. An absloute shocker. Who was there?

Do you guys rememebr 1997 at Subi, when they beat us by 97 points?

Given that they are our next opponent, I just thought it would be appropriate to start up a thread about past matches between our up-coming opposition.

In our first couple of matches against them, they fired this bloody big canon before the match, which scared the sh*t out of everybody at the ground!! :p

I was there. My Mum & dad had been travelling the year before and it was the first game they'd seen since the '96 semi against the Eagles. What a contrast. When Freo scored a goal after the siren at half time with the ball going over Wellman's head & bouncing through I knew we'd lose. Great games by Ryan O'Conner, Scotty Lucas and James Clement (the one now at Collingwood?).

Yeah, i was there. What a shocker. Dan, i remember the cannon bein' fired at the 'G in our first match v Shockers in '95. Nobody knew (at least in our crew) anything about it. Settlin' in before the game...then...BANG!!!.....Wally and associates...What the f*ck was that !!!????"
Frightenend sh!t outta us!

where's wally?

What 'cup' do Essendon and Fremantle play for again? And why did they get rid of the cannon firing tradition? Anyway, If you want a bit of a laugh, Dockerbabe is feeling fairly confident about Freo's chances on the Dockers board against you guys in 2 weeks time.

Wally,

I also rememeber the first match we played against Fremantle at the WACA in Round 2 1995. We fell over the line by five points, and they fired the canon before that match too.

Apparently, it was done in memory of Albert Thurgood, who was a great Essendon champion from the late 1890s and early 1900s. He was a Western Australia who had some kind of tenous link with Fremantle. By all reports, however, he was an absolute champion.

I remember the cannon, everyone shat themselves when it was fired.
As for Albert Thrugood Dan, I thought you'd know this, but he holds the record for the longest kick in a game, 90 or 100 metres. He was also the first real Essendon spear head and the First Best and Fairest 1901.

I think he also captained a fremantle side as well.

Essendon-Fremantle always interests me a little bit because the 1999 game was my introduction to Australian football as a spectator.

It was a pretty lousy game to watch; Essendon kicked 13 or 14 in the first half and ran out by 70-80 points. I would guess that this year's result won't differ too much from that one.

Thanks for reminding me about that debacle in 1997.
I was at the waca to witness it & to make matters worse, some bastard stole my Bombers flag from the wall at the after match funtion. Grrrhh.
