There lies the problem. If your midfield does become more accountable that is great and it will help your defence. But then pretty much every game you have won in the last 2 years has been a shoot out with your midfield running forward of the ball at every oportunity. If they are not doing this then how does essendon kick a winning score?

Yeah well thats what im hoping for. Hopefully skills improve as well as turnovers cost us pretty badly last year.

Who knows where the goals are going to come from, im excited to find out whos gonna step up and how our new style of footy will be played.

Maybe, maybe not. As you can see below Sam Mitchells season wasn't bad. Wasn't his best season by any stretch, but stacks up nicely next to Watsons. You would also think if Burgoyne get's back anywhere near his best when he was a top 10 player in the competition a few years back, he would be a much more valuable player than Jobe as well.

As crap as we may be, a reason I think we could finish higher than many think is that there are a lot of other crap teams out there.

Really i'd only fear a belting against the Pies or possibly the Cats, simply because their mids would destroy our mids.

We match up well against Dogs and Saints.

I'd fancy our chances against any other team any day of the week.

There also lies the problem, the Hawks are batting pretty deep in the midfield all the way down to 6 or 7 or more as are the pies, saints, dogs, cats, etc. and the bombers dont have much after Watson.

For the bombers to progress pretty massive improvement has to come from somewhere.

For the record I would have at least Mitchell, Hodge and Burgoyne above Watson. There is no way I would swap Cyril for Watson although I cannot argue that Cyril is a better midfielder.

I'd take Stanton or Winderlich easily over Bateman the last 2 years and I'd go Watson over Mitchell too, tho that's arguable.

You're right in general though: We need more guys to step up into those solid, weekly support roles.
If we get 3 or 4 of Pris, Melksham, Heppell, Myers, Colyer, Jetta, Howlett Pris & so on putting in solid 20 touch efforts every week; we'll be a much, much better side. They've all done it at times.
I'm unsure whether Winderlich - who has the talents - will ever really keep it together body-wise; and Stanton's just not cut out to be more than a 3rd or 4th string.

Oh yeah easily. There are probably only Franklin and Hodge who are clearly better. Blokes like Mitchell, Burgoyne, Rioli would all be pretty close with Watson. Watson would be somewhere between 3rd and 6th as far as our best players go I would think

The thing is I would expect all 16 teams would fancy their chance against Essendon and most would have a W next to the game.

I would be surprised if your start was better than 1-4. Dogs, Saints, Pies, Blues and Syd in Syd in a nightmare start. Past performance does not guarantee future results and with a new game plan you may find your season over very quickly.

Yes, our list as a rule is very young. Knights probably won't get enough praise for the list culling he managed to do over the last 3 years, yet was still able to produce a side that was competitive. I had a look at the list in 2007 compared to now - how many on the list still remain? 18 players, plus Neagle as a rookie. So 19 in all. That's a lot of change in 3 years.

But, the major of the list has now played together for 2-3 years. Familiarity and experience are under-rated qualities.

I actually don't think you need a star or a few stars to be a success. They are just cream on top of the cake as it were. If you have a list that is even across it, then you are more likely to be successful - as it means the contributions to it are even and there are no passengers, a risk in relying on too few (Judd at Carlton the prime example).

I don't think there is a more overrated player, by it's own group of supporters, than Watson. He is a solid B Grader, nothing more, nothing else. Essendon fans try to talk him up as elite.

How come everytime Essendon beat a side, they have had an off day or its the worst they have played in years etc..

Such a cop out, just take it on the chin, when our side was on last year (which wasn't very often) we were actually hard to beat.

I dont think every side fancies playing Essendon. Carlton dont thats for sure and i'd doubt that Hawks and Saints supporters would pencil the match in.
