This thread will be a comedy gold mine.

Non Essendon supporter “you suck, you lost. Being on 7,000 days of not winning a final”

Essendon supporter “you are right. We exceeded expectation and are happy just making finals”

I mean, who wins in that debate?

did you enjoy the season?
I did, therefore i win :)

From last week…

This thread will remain dead until after the Elimination Final (if we get there) when it will suddenly find a lot of life.

All the attention will then shift to Essendon’s finals drought as a ‘save face’ despite that many of the people ridiculing would have tipped the Dons to finish bottom 2 or 3 this year. Watch this space.

Wait for it…

This time next week it will be like attracting flies to shit.

They're waiting for the finals result first.

But it's over. We exceeded expectations and our rebuild is on the right track with a finals appearance adding to the development.

Those quick to stick the boot in prematurely were taught a lesson, they'll think twice next time. Thread is done.

Yup, got this one wrong. Reckon most people did, including Essendon fans.

Good luck next week. Don't disappear if it goes pear shaped.
What's pear shaped? You mean if the 8th placed team loses to 5th who was top 3 weeks ago? No result next week changes how good a year we've had.

You just said it. Addressing the clubs culture is the main necessary difference.

Essendon’s culture had been a weight on the clubs performances for 15 years. The supplements saga inadvertently created a soft and complicit club with poor standards and lack of accountability. This fed across the entire club, from the President down. Whilst not conducive to high performance, we can see how and why it emerged as the club went to enormous lengths to heal itself and reintegrate a playing list into a broken club. It needed to be understanding, considerate, complicit, all of which worked against a hard edged, ruthless high performance operation with the highest standards and accountability.

It’s much less about the playing list and more about the culture, quality of assistant coaches and development coaches. A key appointment to facilitate this cultural shift was the appointment of Josh Mahoney who prioritised the clubs culture and its related tentacles as a necessary action. President Brashers review recognised The club needed to distance itself from the soft culture and the poor standards and lack of accountability that marred the club out of the supplements saga era. It needed a harder edge, more ruthless environment and higher standards. Mahoney and Rutten have driven this shift..

There are lots of things that form the sum of parts (EG: game plan execution, player position shifts) however Essendon was never going to realise the talent on its list and become successful until it addressed the cultural issue.

Pleasingly it appears to have done this and now it’s about staying the course to allow the rest to come to fruition over the next 2-3 years.
completely agree with that timewframe and I feel that it's also worth noting that with the retirement of veteran Cale Hooker; there are now just four individuals at Essendon who were at the club during the infamous 2011 season. David Zaharakis, Micheal Hurley, Dyson Heppell and Adrian Dodoro are all that is left it from that dark year.might be time to move on from it all eh? :thumbsu:

Pear shaped?

How can it go wrong when we have made finals against everybodies expectations? Even losing by 100 is still better than the spoon many suggested.

Really?

Hawks and Roos would have been in 95% of people's picks (or even 99%). Collingwood and Adelaide in the next few. With Essendon above that. So in the 14th-ish range.

So coming 8th is a good performance. But I would think that if you lose to the Dogs then the mocking for "x-thousand days without a finals win" will continue for another year. Ladder position wont matter.

Win the final and then obviously that goes away.

Oh no. 😱

The winning a final thing is a bit silly really. I mean, if you're not winning flags does it matter how many finals you've won? And our last flag was more recently than a lot of other clubs.

Look at the 2021 wooden spoon thread. We were comfortably the second choice behind North.

So we enter the finals with no pressure on us whatsoever.
Except from the haters on BF of course mate, the ones that cannot acknowledge the improvement of this club on the back of youngsters and a first year coach. But you know the x number of days since we won a final and all that is what they cling to these days.

I have already posted this but you guys need reminding
Bombers win this year
round 3 St kilda - finishing position 10th - traveling very ordinary at the time
Round 6 Collingwood 17th
Round 9 - Freo 11th
Round 10 - Norf - 18th
Round 11 - West Coast 9th - when they started being terrible
Round 14 Hawthorn 14th
Round 17 Adelaide 15th
Round 18 - Norf 18th
Round 21 Bulldogs 5th when they started falling off a cliff
Round 22 - Gold coast 16th
Round 23 - Collingwood 17th

Congrats on your season guys. but don't think this year is a defining year, lets see how you go next year with a harder draw (and none of this we lost a few games by less than 2 goals. every side has)

So we made the 8 without beating 6 of the other 7 finalists, look out then when the natural improvement comes from the 2nd least experienced list in the comp 😊

We will have to request to the AFL next year to play 22 games against the yet to be determined Top 4 for 2022. Roughly 5 or 6 games against each then.

Wins in a fixture against teams finishing 9th or lower are now irrelevant because it doesn't suit the narrative. Thanks for the heads up.

7 of their 11 wins from bottom 5 sides, only defeated one top 8 side. Truly an amazing effort only North record is worse this year.

We could quite as easily split our 4 losses to Swans & Giants, 1 of which was our home game switched to a neutral venue.

The 11 point loss to the Demons could easily have been a win.
We've only been opened up by Port & Bris on their grounds, and the Cats put a gap on us late at GMHBA.

As has been mentioned by other posters, we played interstate more than any other Victorian team.

Sure, we may receive a tougher draw next year, but may only need marginal incremental improvement to achieve the same wins or better.
