I think it was more that Essendon, without any high or even known expectations last year, actually had that new coach/new challenge feeling and showed some short term fight.

This year feels more realistic, and they need a serious overhaul of personal, and mindset. There is a predictability about them that needs to be addressed.

There are issues throughout the club.

Brasher is all talk.
Campbell is a huge issue.
I'm not big on the Dodoro hysteria either way but it's time for him to go.
Certain leaders don't adhere to defensive standards.

All of which are bigger issues than Ben Rutten.

Wholesale changes required.

Bring in Choco or Yze or Simon Lloyd or to help Truck out and get the coaching sorted

Dodo needs to **** off and let RFK take the wheel

At board/CEO/President level a few heads need rolling

The most Essendon thing ever is to sign Clarkson and sack Rutten to continue this dumb tradition of changing coaches every 3 years.

2008 miss finals under Knights
2009 make finals
2010 miss finals and sack knights for the ‘dream team’
2011 make finals under Hird
2012 miss finals
2013 make finals but get kicked out due to supplement saga
2014 Make finals under Bomber as Hird is banned
2015 Hird comes back, miss finals and sack coach. The decision to keep Hird as coach meant Bomber was also technically removed as a coaching option.
2016 Woosha ‘caretaker’ coach comes. Miss finals due to bans
2017 make finals
2018 miss finals
2019 make finals and announce ‘brilliant’ coaching succession plan, essentially sacking Woosha
2020 miss finals with succession plan in effect
2021 Rutten takes over and make finals
2022 miss finals and we’re already talking about sacking him

No long term coach and no coach given the opportunity to build their list. It’s pathetic how badly run as a football club Essendon is. We go through coaches like an EPL side. Miss finals one year and it’s time for a new coach.

Rutten is far from the biggest issue when a couple of people (like Dodoro and Campbell) were at the club for most or all of that period. If you have the same issues under 5 different coaches in 12 years, then maybe it isn’t the coaches.

The head coach isn't the obvious obstacle, and focusing on him is dangerous and short-sighted, considering the club's recent history. There needs to be a thorough examination.

I don't want Robert Foster Knight taking over he was groomed by Dodoro. We need a new recruitment team from outside the club I would be looking at poaching recruitment staff from top 4 teams we go and hire the best recruiter/draft guru in the buisness.

Adrian reviewed himself and concluded that he was doing a fantastic job.

Sheeds agreed and concluded Josh Mahoney was the problem.

No chance of us sacking Rutten this year I don't think - nor do I want us to.

There's too much self-interest and too much at stake from the likes of Campbell etc for this to ever happen this year.

The timeline checks out as such:

Early 2018: Woosha's contract was out at the end of 2018. He'd had a good first two seasons at the club, but there wasn't any need to extend his contract so early into the piece. Why not just let 2018 play out a bit before making a decision? Campbell ends up extending his contract until the end of 2020, and next thing you know, we start the season 2-6 and have an underwhelming season.

2019: Another underwhelming season. Making finals, but no chance of ever doing much once we got there. There seemed a general feeling with many Dons fans that they had seen enough of Woosha, and the talk was that the original plan was to sack him. But of course, sacking him after extending his contract would be a horrible look on Campbell and co, so what do we do? Announce the succession plan, ensuring Woosha sees out the remainder of his contract until the end of 2020.

The succession plan - involved us choosing Rutten, with no real particularly thorough process interviewing a pool of candidates etc. Campbell and co had laid their eyes on Rutten and chosen their man. Same token - if we sack Truck so early into the piece, the repercussions would fall on Campbell etc, for not going through a proper process, their chosen man failing at the task etc.

And what happens then? A heap of pressure being put on Campbell.

Of course, the irony being that we've also re-signed Campbell for a further two years...

Fox reporting Rutten in firing line :(

Expect it to go something like - Rutten sacked, Clarkson hired (process....who needs a process), Brasher falls on his sword as symbolic taking of responsibility....despite his term being close to up anyway.

Bombers really need an enormous dose of reality- they're just not good enough. And won't be for a long time. For all the talk about their youth it's the senior players who are their better performers. Plus so many clubs have better young talent that are contributing more. So they'll fall further behind.

They haven't bottomed out yet but they desperately need to.

Not much fun playing 3 sides who finished top 4 on the ladder in the first 3 rounds, they never had a chance
First 9 weeks we played all of the current top 6 which we lost to and Bulldogs (who might make the 8) and won the other two (Hawks and Crows). Plus some key injuries. Was a very hard draw...

But we have no defensive gameplan.
