Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

Look at these Carlton conspiracy theorists. Such a sad state of affairs for their club that they spend their February's obsessing about Essendon's leadership group.

Not a conspiracy, plenty of clubs doing it.. We did it with Kruezar. AFL set the rules and allow these loopholes, clubs would be crazy not to exploit them.

Are you suggesting that Carlton pumped Kreuzer full of “unknown” substances and then when discovered, agreed to payments made after his playing career under the guise of some kind of coaching appointment ?

ZMerrett strikes me as a Marc Murphy type of pick for captaincy, reward for being the best player, not the best leader. I know there are some decent young leaders coming through but Redman or similar effort player would have been a better call imo until hobbs etc are ready.

I've been wrong before though, Cotchin was that sort of pick too and it ended up ok
Redman is an odd cat, off-field seems to march to the beat of his own drum or something. I hoped he'd at least be LG this year but we don't have a leadership group o_O

Problem Essendon has is remember those picks we lost in 2013/2014? Well that was right on the back of two awful drafts in 2011/2012 that produced Jackson Merrett (brother of Zach, 50 games & injuries), Mark Baguley (mature age rookie, 134 games, retired), and then Daniher and Gleeson as long-term players, both of whom had pretty bad injury issues (Daniher is the only one still playing, he was traded of course and isn't really leadership material in any case).

Sum result is that the players who have played more than 50 games at Essendon, who were originally drafted by Essendon, are:
Heppell 30 years old, 213 games
Merrett 27, 184 games
Parish 25, 132 games
McDonald-Tipungwuti 29, 126 games
McGrath 24, 111 games
Langford 26, 107 games
Laverde 26, 91 games
Guelfi 25, 83 games
Redman 25, 80 games
Ridley 24, 68 games

Only a couple over 25, and none bar Heppell, Merrett and McGrath have ever been in the leadership group. It's not exactly inspiring...

Why would Essendon need to do that? All of the players had court settlements for damages/loss of wages which were paid outside the cap at the time, all transparent and above board.

Maybe don't answer that since it's a completely stupid tangent that has nothing to do with anything that belongs on this board. Take it to the Carlton board or something

Seems that a dedicated thread on their own board isn't quite enough to contain the obsession.

I see. So you think Essendon is trying to be sneaky and hide going further under the cap?
What would Essendon be trying to exploit here, making our players frugal?

Banking that cap space so you can use it to sign a FA or out of contract player next year.. If I was Brad Scott & Dodoro I would be looking very closely at Ben McKay.

We've been restructuring other players just to meet the floor... XD We've already been banking it for the maximum allowable time, any more and we just lose it.

Convenient way of manipulating the salary cap..

what the.

Essendon are barely spending the minimum amount required. Why would we need to manipulate anything.

Did you even check this before you took this pot shot?

I have no problem with Merrett as captain, He Is a quality/AA player and obviously his teammates voted him in as leader.

Going to be a bit of unfair pressure on Tjastas to perform straight away given some of the kids taken after him in the draft

Apparently some smoke around footy manager Josh Mahoney.
Dons don’t need this kind of distraction whilst trying to plot their path …

This is the trade board. Last I checked you can't trade off-field staff. Main board probably has several threads to choose from that would be more appropriate... or you could make another one.

Fair enough.
Just wondered if Mahoney is at loggerheads with GM List and Recruiting Adrian Dodoro, what effect that might have on planning for upcoming trades and acquisitions.
A lot of groundwork a long way out goes into these things and you’d imagine a united front would be desirable …

Speaking of which,
The dons have just brought back Merve Keane to the list and recruiting team.
Soon to be 70yo, Merv was a teammate of Sheedy at Richmond in the early 70’s.
Guess he has plenty of experience and might provide a steadying hand in troubled waters …
