Dodo should make a play for Reid. McKay is all but gone.

Up the offer to 800k to trigger band 1 if the Roos agree to trade 1.

Ess offer BZT (we need anyone at this stage) their pick 9 and F1.

We end up with BZT, 2, 9, 16 (ports) and a F1 and get an awesome death ride.

Ess get Reid and McKay
North - BZT, Curtain, O’Sullivan, Reid (the other one) and hopefully Sanders.

3 key backs a key forward and gun mid.
I would do this
And funnily enough feels win win

Roos have some great talent already with sheezel, wardlaw, george

Dons more than anything just need a player who can wrangle a game and show the side some hunger

I think zerk wants to go home though

Lord - delist
Phillips - retired
Tippa - retire (will stay on staff with vfl coaching role)
BTZ - trade (not quite a 1st choice key back - currency will never be higher)
Mcbride - delist (was a cat b rookie so not absorbing a list spot)
Parish - lose to FA (always been a fan but on balance we have hobbs coming into this role)
Jones - 2 year contract extension
Hunter - 1 year extension on rookie list
Menzie - 1 year extension on rookie list
Baldwin - 2 year extension and upgrade to snr list
D'ambrosio - 1 year extension on rookie list
Bryan - 2 year extension (if willing to stay)
Voss - delist
Montgomerie - delist
Snelling - delist (unlucky but need the list spot)

Leaves 5 x snr list spots and 2 x rookie spots.

Now I might be dreaming but.....

- BTZ is worth a selection somewhere between 25-35. Ideally swap for adelaide's 2nd pick in the 20's, happy to send our pick in the 40's back their way.

- Parish will activate band 1 compo. Leaves us with picks around 7-8 or 8-9 and picks around 23-25 and 27-28, 1 leftover pick in the late 60's.

- If McKay decides to go elsewhere, so be it. We pick up 4 kids in the first two rounds of the draft, a back up ruckman late, a rookie and leave a list spot open over summer

- If McKay chooses Essendon we will need to broker a trade. My hunch is the AFL will allow North NGA access to Sander's, making their pick attached to Port in the late teens a little useless as it gets absorbs as points.

- Offer North our future 1st (probably lands anywhere between 8-12 next year) and our pick in the late 20's for McKay and their pick attached to port. On the open market I think Mckay is worth a pick in the first half of the teens, so that's the best your gonna get.

- From here we're taking 4 kids within the first 30 picks and a back up ruckman with a rookie selection... or 3 kids in the first 30 picks and trade the other into the first or (more likely) second round of the draft next year. Brisbane might be the perfect partner here, they'd love ports pick and would probably trade their future 1st for it.

Best 22 Round 1 2024 if squad fully fit

B McGrath, McKay, Kelly
HB Redmond, Reid, Ridley
C Martin, Setterfield, Tsatas
HF Caldwell, Jones, Langford
F Menzie, Wright, Stringer
Foll Draper, Merrett, Hobbs
Int Bryan, Cox, Perkins, Shiel
Emerg Laverde, Durham, Heppell, A Davey

James Stewart cut despite having a year on his contract, good move seeing as you’ve got the cap space, cleared up an extra spot on the list going into the silly season.

Anticipating a pantsing tomorrow and GCS will beat the Roos (who won't risk pick 1). so we'll have pick 7 before bids and such.

Extensions: Baldwin, Bryan, D'Ambrosio, Menzie, Jones, Hunter (had him delisted previously, but list spots are open)
Retire: Tippa & phillips already announced
Delist: stewart (announced), voss, lord, mcbride, montgomerie, snelling
Trade:
Zerk to Port for 37
Parish to Cats for 1st rd (pick 8)
Cap space to who wants it for F1
F1 we pick up + 28 + 37 to GCS for Pick 5

FA in;
McKay (i guess)
Gresham
Jordon
M.Crouch (Parish coverage)

Picks 5, 7 & 8 in draft to target some quality depth coming through (Curtin, Caddy and Duursma ideally)

Hope they don't get Vertigo and look back at their Rear Window and regret letting him go because he was The Man Who Knew Too Much ...

i'd be wary Duursma looks like the best need and becomes out of reach.
iim not so much concerned about the pick number after bids, because those academy kids aren't available anyway.
But FA comp takes an active kid off the board.

I'd think the assistance package would need to be in place pre FA/trade period. It's best for North to know what they have going into that period i'd have thought. And the comp to know what picks they truly hold. So the AFL should be ironing that out outside of what McKay gets them.

Unless it's the AFL saying we'll give you 3 if McKay doesn't get you that via FA.
In any event, i'm hoping it's limited to pre-listing Sanders (as BS as that is). 3x top 10 kids to GCS, a top 10 kid + a top 3 pick to North.
There's uncompetitive teams, yes. But there's also sides trying to rebuild.

If the outcome is the AFL gives them 3 one way or another, then sure. Sign McKay for overs. But i'm rather hoping it's not that package.
The AFL will pony up the Swans so they offer enought to North to justify the AFL gifting Pick Two as Compo for McKay.

Geelong are not trading for parish.

Trades I would hope we are in on;

Gold Coast first round pick
Brisbane first round pick 2024
Nick Haynes (buy cap and pick)
Lachie Whitfield (see above)

Any other guys who can free up space for them, we should be right up in on it.

We have ample space, even with a contracted player delisted.

Let Parish go for for Band 1 compensation, allows us an opportunity to re balance the list.

Brissy won't trade their F1 this year. They'd be dumb to do so.

I wonder if there'd be the temptation from Brisbane to move that F1 into the first round this year, and take a first round pick this year and then Levi Ashcroft next year.

It's not something we've typically done in the past though; as we saw last trade period with Dunkley, having a first even if you've got a F/S can lead to dividends.

This was my thinking. Levi looks like he could be another top 5 pick in 2024. Get on the front foot early and get in the Lions ear.

You never know what could happen, but I think you're more likely to trade it next year.

So you're saying Essendon are planning on clogging up the trades untl the last day again this year?

I have zero confidence in anything good happening this offseason because the people involved don’t seem to want to implement the changes needed.

Scott’s talking about needing leaders to set the standard for younger players but the thing is these leaders have to be able to perform on the weekend to be respected enough to set those standards.

At minimum you should be able to run with your opponent and consistently hit the open man by hand and foot.

Heppell and McGrath can’t do that. So as your standard setters everyone else can see that level of skill and effort isn’t required. It creates a culture of “why should I try if X is good enough”.

This year's draft is s**t it falls away pretty quickly after the top 10 with 3 of those going to GC via their acadmey. I would be trying to bank picks for next year

Given the need for more talent on the roster, if there’s enough of a gap trading our first to the bulldogs for their 2 firsts this year and helping them get in front of their F/S pick might be the way to go.

Play the odds that one of those players works out

He didn't just re-sign Heppell when he was talking about leaders and call it a day.

He was saying we need MORE leaders, including the ones we already have.

Reading between the lines the ones we have aren't good enough and need more help.

You gotta listen to the whole thing, not just a soundbite here and there (or worse, a half-arsed quote on foxfooty).
