Essendon - A Danger Game?

every game is a danger game- you never know which way it will go. essendon are playing some good footy at the moment and seem to have their mid field pretty sweet.
Actually our midfield has been decimated by injury. McVeigh, Welsh, Prismall, Hille and Riemers are missing so we have plenty of players to come back and strengthen our midfield.

We need to murder the bastards.

Their structure will be all over the place - no Lucas and the need to play McPhee in the Backline will expose them across the HF.

Starting midfield of Stanton, Watson, Winderlich and ???? Not being cocky, just don't know their side that well.

I really rate Watson, Stanton and Winderlich would be brlliant to have as second stringers or 'icing on the cake', but as key ball winners I'm not so sure.

We really need Mitchell, Sewell, Bateman and Lewis to dominate these guys. Without Hille there hopefully we can at least draw level in the ruck and win the game.

Pears and Hocking are being given a Dawson-esque apprenticeship in key position defence. Hopefully Buddyrough can teach them a few things!
That ???? would be Lovett, champ.

Everyone around here seems pretty confident that we'll roll over Essendon and get 4 points, increase our percentage and be in the top 4 within a few weeks, but I'm not so confident.
...
Does anyone share my concerns?

Yep. If the Hawks go in with the attitude of a lot of bigfooty supporters... then we are going to get rolled.

Spot on mate....

After reading this thread (reminded me of some Cats fans in the week before last years GF:eek:), I assume we just need to rock up, run around the oval a couple of times and take the points??

Any game is a danger game, and sure if things all went to plan, we would expect to roll the bombers - unfortunately that word is "if"....

there is no guarentee we'll win....on paper we should collect the 4 points....though it has been proven time and time again when teams have there backs to the walls they come out firing....our biggest concern is the Bombers pace, if we nullify that factor we should bring home th ebacon..

Whenever we are presented with a 'dead certainty' I remind myself of a game we played against the Dockers at the Dome in Round 18 2001. We had them on toast and should have had them slaughtered by half time. Instead, we were only something like 5 goals up. We lost 3 players to injury and they ran over the top of us, winning by something like three goals.

Nothing is ever safe.

I am really looking forward to this game. With Ryder in the ruck, Hille out, Fletcher out, it's going be a farce. We should win the hitouts, destroy them in clearences - this is the perfect hane for our forward line to play itself into form. Not even worried about Gilly and Birch - great to have them back if they play, but Lloyd just doesn't have the face of Fev. Robbie isn't too bad of a mathup for him. With Taylor free to play, and Hille out, we don't need Robbie in the ruck, so it's all good.

As a rule (of thumb) I don't gamble, but I'm seriously considering putting some cash on this. A bit on Hawks to win, and a tidy sum on Hawks by 40+ as well. I could use the cash, and I just can't see any way that we don't blow the 'Dons out of the park. There are just so many reasons why we should kill it. Bet or not, though, I can't wait to watch the game. Gonna really enjoy this one.

I'm confident, however I feel Knights is a clever coach and in the Clarkson mould, so you never know.
I hope we smash them...we need to get some confidence into the group. We should smash them if Gilham and Birchall come back (outs???? hard to pick) and we have our best team in for some time while Essendon are missing a few and Lucas won't play (bizarre given our defense problems) and they a young, inexperienced side. We need Hodge and Buddy to stand up because they've given us very little all season by their hefty standards.
Go Hawks!

Don't bet is my advice. As in don't ever bet. It's a bad habit and can be bloody costly as I found out last week. I do agree that you should beat us by 40+ but we can be unpredictable and if you are down 1% we could surprise you.

I am a croupier, so I know well how much money people can spend on betting.

Sports betting (as well as poker) are somewhat appealing though, as with enough skill/knowledge, you can make money from it, somewhat reliably. There are some poker players I deal to regularly who make a decent living out of it.

looking forward to it too, I actually logged onto bigfooty to read a few hawk perspectives on it.

Maybe I am a bit of a masochist, but I just hope that its a high scoring match.

If franklin and roughhead kick 15+ between them, so be it. I am just hoping to see Essendon find some avenues for goals.

the last 3 games franklin and roughead have murdered the dons, this time around 2 new kids will have a crack stopping them, they surely cannot do any worse than have buddy slam through 9.

Whilst it could get ugly, i'd be disappointed if all 4 quarters end to end are one way traffic to the hawks. We have a hard working enthusiastic young team that when up play for each other. I'd say the guys will be pumped for the challenge, and will at least for some fleeting moments trouble you.

if i see a side who dips their heads and stops trying, i'll be really disappointed.(unless of course that team is hawthorn ;) )

It's true, we're boned.

One player over 26 in Lloyd, and two more who have played over 100 games in Stanton and McPhee. Even our better kids are out.

40+ would be a safe bet I would think...

With a name like nighthawk you would be forgiven to think that you followed the hawks, but as i can see you follow the dons..
in anycase i think the dons are on the way up but they need to find other avenue towards goal, Lucas wont be back to his best and loyd is far past his best if the dons can play Neagle for the rest of the season and just give him some game time things can look good for 09.

Early on in the season we were ridiculously young and inexperienced, playing a half dozen blokes who no one would have considered to be in our top 30, let alone 22.

Essendon is in an eerily similar position now.

We've inched back to something resembling a decent side on paper, though by no means at full strength. Given we're on an upward trend and the Bombers are decimated we should win.

Make no mistake, if the Bombers get up it would be a truly phenomenal effort by their kids, who to their credit, have shown plenty of heart this season.

Good thread.

I would like to think some of you will be eating your words, but i fear that the other people (such as the OP) are worried over nothing.
