I will try not to make you look like an idiot by ridiculing you, but all of Essendons premeirships count.

Overall, the EFC has won 20 premierships. 4 in the VFA and 16 in the VFL/AFL

Only the last 16 count. The VFL/AFL is the same competition. Ask the AFL, they will tell you.

Did you know that in 1996, we celebrated the CENTENARY of the VFL/AFL. This was not centenary of the game itself (which was formed in 1858), but it was a centenary of the VFL/AFL competition, which began in 1897.

Grab any media book, and look at past statistics. If you look at Essendon's or Carltons win-loss records, it will show them from 1897 onwards. it doesn't just show them from 1987, or 1990. It shows them back in the 1800's.

It's official. You can't argue it. the AFL as is is right now, is the SAME competition as the VFL. It has just been expanded to be national (which makes it better by the way).

How do you explain te AFL's centenary year then ? I'd like to see you explain that. How do you explain the stats in the footy record which shows Essendon vs Carlton, played 210 times. It doesn't say "played 25 times, from 1987". It takes into account all matches from when the VFL/AFL began. The AFL was just a name change. It is still the same competition.

Ok kids, you can look at this 2 ways:

1) The AFL is just the extended version of the former VFL, where all records on clubs performances count (eg, premierships). This is how all records are kept, and what I think should still be held and counted.

OR

2) The AFL is just that. This competition started in 1990 and therefore had only 11 seasons (this is what sabre was trying to say I think). And in those 11 seasons, the double premierships have been won by West Coast Eagles (Oh yeah!), Adelaide, Essendon & North Melbourne.

If you counted the VFL premierships with the AFL premierships - would South Fremantle and East Fremantle's Grand final titles count towards Fremantle. And Port Adelaide in the SANFL competition stand for the AFL version of the club?

PJC...Essendon's 2000 side was as good as the 85' team.

Don't know why you cited Hawthorn's 85 GF side. Dunstall was just starting his career, Lucas and Brereton played CHF differently and Langford played in the ruck, as Hawthorn were struggling for ruckmen that day. From memory they played O'Holloran on Salmon.

So really, I think this years Essendon would've flogged the 85'Hawthorn team as well.

If anything, you should be comparing both Essendon sides. Both had similar season's in that they flogged sides from one week to the next. Current side has that little more flexibility..especially from the bench. Tough call though.

SUCCESSFUL clubs have these qualities in abundance. I would say that over the last 18 years, Richmond has lacked moral strength (unquestionably), they have certainly lacked backbone (although that improved when Noethey arrived) and their previous good reputation has been tarnished. Now, I certainly beleive that Essendon has these 3 qualities in abundance. This character we have shown is part of the reason we have bene able to obtain so many victories.

But anyway, back to my point. Please explain why Richmond is the greatest "club" ? (with the emphasis on club)

We have played the Blues in 6 Grand Finals (same as Collngwood). We first played you in a Grand Final in 1908. In the Herald-Sun survey this year, Carlton nominated Essendn as their most hated club. The only reason Carlton like to claim Collingwood is still their main rival is because they can beat Collingwood. Carlton can't beat Essendon and are threatened by them (eg most premierships, 1993 GF, 2000 PF), so they naturally say Collingwood. Carlton supporters can't hack losing.

Carlton ARE obviously a great club (in all seriousnes). The fact they havn't won a wooden spoon is something they are very proud about. We have "won" three. It all depends on how you measure success. We have won 16 flags in 102 complted seasons (we didn't compete in 1916-17), while Carlton have taken all 104 season to win their 16 flags. So our strike rate is a bit better. Having said that, they have made the finals 6 more times (63 to 57), yet we have won more finals matches than them. In fact, we have won more finals matches than any other club (64 finals wins). Their overall winning percentage (62%) is slightly better than ours. Many people think (including me), that overall winning percentage over 104 yars is the best indicator of how successful a club is.

So, if Carlton supporters claim to be the best, they have a vaild point. But if they are so successful on the field, where are their supporters. Their pathetic supporter bsae (relative to their success) is a joke. They should have as many supporters as us, but they don't come within a bulls roar

As anyone who knows anything about the operation of share ownership and companies will tell you that holding 20% of the shares will normally give you the right to appoint a director onto the board of the company. The last time I looked, Carlton had appointed exactly zero directors to the North board. So much for power then, hey?
