Ian "Bluey" Shelton

Switching Fitzmaurice to his Team of the Century position of back pocket, and putting Bluey at CHB. Missed the 64 season due to a serious eye injury sustained on the farm but returned in 65 and played on with vision in only one eye in an injury interupted final season, but a final season as vice captain in a premiership side.

Strong, courageous, dual sided, tough as old boot laces and would run through a brick wall to clear the ball from defence, Bluey is a welcome addition.

Sporno 4 Pyros

He exists because of Ned Kelly.

In the interest of ticking this over, [PLAYERCARD]Jason Winderlich[/PLAYERCARD].

Schpiel to come.

188cm, 182 kg | 129 games with Essendon between 2003 to 2015 for 83 goals.

half/mid-sized forward and midfielder

At his height with electrifying speed Winderlich was, in many respects, one of the early prototypes of 'that midfielder' that every club is looking for in almost every draft but which, in reality, appears only every few years. As with all early prototypes, there were kinks and, I am sad to say, Winderlich's level of raw ability seemed to be matched only by a constitutional weakness that prevented him from ever realising his potential.

What should have been a glittering career was ruined by the toll of at least 2 back surgeries, an ACL and the constant presence of hamstring injuries.

Still, we got to see what he could do when he played 19 games in each of 2009 and 2010 mainly through the middle of the ground. The results were bloody good. He had both the ability to accumulate and the pace to break the game open from stoppages (though I would not say he was particularly strong inside) and certainly in space.

Just as it looked like Winderlich had finally put his injury problems behind him, he tore his ACL a few games in to 2011 and the rest is basically history.

His size and speed allowed him to fill in at full forward on many occasions where he could beat just about anyone on the lead but also played with a defensive substance.

He's perfect for this game as, if we are just concerned with his best, we are talking about one of the top players to play for Essendon post 2000 era. On what we saw he could have been anything.

With my next pick I take the 2005 ANZAC medallist in Andrew Lovett.

I still strongly believe if St Kilda had shown him the same blind loyalty they showed the Tiprat than they'd have a 2nd flag in their cabinet.

Shit, I never thought about the loyalty point.

Lovett streaming through the middle of the ground in Q4 in 2009 and 2010 GFs? I think you're right.

Lovett would've been more 2010 considering he was an Essendon player in 2009.

2009 he was busy zipping through the middle to get us over the line ANZAC day. ;)

But yes, a genuine quick line breaker is what they needed in 2010. Put him on a wing instead of Ray or the HFF instead of Peake and they win that game.

I misread, it was second flag in the cabinet.

Was gonna pick Lovett but Murphy at his peak for Carlton was a pretty handy player on a wing/half forward. Needed the second ruck and 2013 Bellcho kicked 28 goals so pretty reasonable.

I strongly believe if he was still here this bloke would've gone much much earlier.

Yep. I was tempted to go for him but thought everyone would pass on him twice again and I'd get him with my next set.

Saad, Lovett, Cupido and Rioli. Dunno how many games we'd win but shit it'd be fun to watch.

2018 to 2019 was so far and away the best small defending I've seen. Throw in his ability to rebound and he's the best small defender in my view.

A few choice words from Voss and I suspect he'll be back.

I suspect I've nicked a couple blokes along the way you'd been hoping would slide.

Saad, Goddard and Cupido are the ones.

Cupido was an outrageously talented individual. Much, much too good to be the caricature he has become but it is not like his career backs that up.

The Cupido of 2003 was Wingard good.

Sorry about the delay.

I have to go with my man, [PLAYERCARD]Jayden Laverde[/PLAYERCARD].

191/91 | key defender / third tall / half forward

69 games for Essendon from 2015 to date. 37 goals.

I need someone to run on the lead with the likes of Lloyd and the other dynamic forwards. Just when it seemed that injury had claimed the career of another stupidly gifted footballer, Laverde found his niche at full back dominating the opposition's key forwards.

Out of superstition I am not going to say anything else about my one true love.
