Thanks Shermy.

I need some midfield class and some left-footed composure.

He'd compare with Gary O'Donnell the best but looks like Bomber Thompson.

36 = Zac Merrett making him the 2nd current Don to be picked.

Pick 37 will be in a separate post as this one needs thinking time.

Unless I'm mistaken, Shermy you're on the clock. Given you weren't tagged earlier it starts now.

Bipolarbear you can jump in quick. I just want videos of the fight if you steal shermy's pick
Ah * I was gonna pick Boris.
Legit had him on my short-list. Thought we were waiting for Boncer still when I checked in this morning.

So BPB and I have come to an understanding.

With his pick 34 I'm taking Paddy Ryder.

197cm / 94kg | ruck / tall forward

Sitting on 269 AFL games with 189 goals (170 (70) with Essendon, 73(54) with Port and 26(15) with St Kilda).

I read someone here describe a player as a 'cheat code' and that basically sums up Ryder. An unfair, and possibly unnatural, combination of the speed, agility and ball handling skills you'd associate with an indigenous small forward at 6'5 and about 95kgs, with the ability to leap tall buildings. He was also one of the best kicks up to 60m going around (seriously people, remember the snap from the boundary 45-50m on a wet night against GC?), a natural follower and one of the best pure tap ruckman, likely of all time.

I guess nature balanced its creation, to make it fairer for the competition, by not giving Ryder the psychology of a champion, certainly not the belief in his extraordinary ability. Sheedy coached Ryder for 1 year and almost issued a warning that the difficulty with Ryder would be getting him to believe. He needed to be taught to demand the ball with the attitude of someone who knows he is as good as Ryder was.

Ultimately we didn't provide him with the environment in his formative years, 2006 to 2010 was a dark time, to draw the absolute best out of him, to create the champion. Then as he emerged as one of our best and most important players ASAGA struck and made 2006 to 2010 look like a good period by comparison.

So instead of writing this at a point at which he's a 300 game champion of Essendon, possibly a Simon Madden calibre ruck, he's another ultimately unfulfilled potential who left the home where he belonged, in circumstances that do no credit to him and which otherwise shamed Essendon.

Port didn't want to consistently use him as a first choice ruck and his time there ended prematurely. While it's a bit sickening watching him play at St Kilda, as a 3 club player, he is at least respected for his ability and has garnered the AFL-wide recognition of the reality that he has consistently been one of the most influential players in the league.

I'm picking him because I get him at his absolute best. That's a guy who forward was basically unstoppable on the lead, someone who could float up above any pack to take a massive mark, a hard working physical presence around the ball and sublime tap ruck. To top it off he could kick with touch over 60m as well as anyone could.

Had he been recruited to Essendon in the early 90s instead of 2005 I genuinely believe we'd be having heated arguments about whether he is as good as Madden.

BPB takes my 42 and my next pick after that.

I don't need to think long with this one.

Darren "Daisy" Williams. A true rover in every sense of the word. Tough, skilled, fearless, courageous. He'd only play half a season per year in todays footy due to the number of head knocks he received. Dual premiership player in the all conquering 84/85 sides and Victorian representative

This is one of my first vague memories of supporting the Dons. Watch from about 5.30 onwards where we come back from 4+ goals down in time on at Princess Park to win the match with Neale leading the way with a great pack mark and 2 goals. Pweter Vanders takes a classic mark too.

Can still remember going to the shop to buy a number for my jumper...mum wasn’t going to sew on two numbers (32) so we chose 6/9 and then I watched the replays for a couple of weeks to see which player I preferred. Neale has done his knee by then and wasn’t playing so No.9 Shane Heard it was 😆😆

Thanks for posting the video. 1980's Essendon was peak football to me. Neale was an absolute star of the game and the footballing community in general was robbed of seeing a player who would have dominated footy if not for injury.

This comeback match was the part of an 11 game? (memory fading) winning streak over those bitches in the early 80's.

Ahhh, memories! Also...* Carlton!!!
