Neale Daniher.

half back / half forward

188cm, 84kg.

82 games, 32 goals
  • VFL Recruit of the Year 1978
  • Victorian representative (2 games)
  • New South Wales representative (1 game)
  • Essendon Best and Fairest 1981
  • Essendon captain 1982

A man for who the accolades will say almost nothing. According to folklore he was better than Terry. That’s a claim that should be treated with a bit of scepticism because Terry was a superstar, and the legend of players who cannot fulfil their potential can sometimes grow out of proportion to their actual ability. Having said that, and thankfully, Neale did get a three year uninterrupted run between 1979 and 1981 when he showed the footy world what he could do (alongside Terry). This run resulted in Neale being appointed club captain in 1982 at 21/22yo and four years younger than Terry (who assumed the captaincy after injury struck Neale). It would seem the claims of Neale being at least as good as Terry have to be taken seriously.

Unfortunately 1982 was basically where it ended for Neale as his career was ruined by a string of injuries, limiting him to a total of 16 games between 1982 and his retirement in 1990 (5 games in 1985, 4 games in 1989 and 7 games in 1990). Despite his career spanning one of the most successful eras in the club's history he played a single elimination final in 1979.

I am sure there are others out there who are better placed to comment on Neale's ability.

3 x Premiership player
B&F 1992
Insanely courageous
Leading goal kicker and All Australian 85 but I will probably be playing him at CHB where he played in the 93 granny.
To get into the all conquering 84-85 side at just 19yo is an amazing achievement...then he had to survive some of the off the ball stuff (does his jaw still click from a hit he copped from Brereton in one of those gf”s?)

Highlights and yarn telling kick in around 26.45 mark.

Fwiw BrunoV I grew up with my old man telling me Neale was our greatest if only player, he was the James Hird of the 80s.

He's also always been adamant one of Sheeds biggest mistakes was not playing him in the 1990 finals series, so there was a certain amount of vindication when Sheedy himself admitted that recently.

Scott Lucas. The 2nd Twin Tower alongside Matthew Lloyd, Lucas was a mainstay at CHF including the all conquering 2000 premiership side. A raking left foot you always felt he was in with a chance on the run from 60 odd, and set shot from outside 50. Lucas played a small amount of football at CHB and proved a very useful defender, however CHF was his trade which he performed with aplomb. He kicked 7 last quarter goals to almost steal an unlikely victory in Sheedy and Hird's last game when coming from almost 50 points down in one of the more remarkable individual bursts of football you'll ever see.

Most notable career achievement was the only time anyone in the history of ever can recall him using his right foot to set up Gary Moorcroft's 2001 mark of the year.

Games: 270
Goals: 471
Premiership: 2000
Best and Fairest: 2003, 2006
Leading Goalkicker: 2006

Already taken at 17, Pweter.

What a wasted write up!

In that case, the Flying Dutchman, Paul Vander Haar.

Can't be screwed with another writeup other than to say beer, smokes and burgers gave this man super powers. Fearless in the air and a key pillar in our premiership years of 84/85. Was having a purple patch of late career form when Dermie hammered him into the next century on the centre wing during the 1989 2nd semi.

Legend.

Pweter For what it's worth Lucas won a B&F at CHB so I think very useful defender undersells him. ;)
I thought he did but when my detailed research (Wikipedia) didn't back my thoughts I decided to leave it out less I make a fool of myself. As it turns out I made an even bigger fool of myself for not being able to read the stickied post.

Another great pick. One of those early 80s players that helped me fall in love with the club. Used to take huge pack marks/hangers every week.
I think it is actually Bipolarbear ’s pick

Same here. Old man insists that Neale was Hird level good.

This is one of my first vague memories of supporting the Dons. Watch from about 5.30 onwards where we come back from 4+ goals down in time on at Princess Park to win the match with Neale leading the way with a great pack mark and 2 goals. Pweter Vanders takes a classic mark too.

Can still remember going to the shop to buy a number for my jumper...mum wasn’t going to sew on two numbers (32) so we chose 6/9 and then I watched the replays for a couple of weeks to see which player I preferred. Neale has done his knee by then and wasn’t playing so No.9 Shane Heard it was 😆😆

This is a great pick. I was going to grab him with my next pick if still available.

By the end of 81, Neale was better than Terry would ever be, and that is no disrespect to Terry.

But for his knees, Neale would have ended up on the same level of Watson/Hird. Crichton Medal at 20 tells you how good he was - with guys like Madden/Watson/Neagle (at his peak) & TD in the team.

His story is one tragedy after another.

Supremely talented all round athlete. His NSW boarding school (from before he went to Assumption) rugby union coach said he had what it took to go a long way (the Australian side was mentioned), and he made a few tons playing in the Assumption 1st XI
