Norm McDonald

Half back flank in the '49 and '50 premiership sides and B&F in 1951. Also HBF in the Indigenous Team of the Century.

McDonald was a blisteringly fast half back who Dick Reynolds used in what is quite a modern manner. In an era where defenders played on their man at all costs McDonald was given licence to use his pace to set up attacking forays to great effect where it was understood he'd occasionally get burnt on the rebound but Reynolds encouraged McDonald to continue playing his natural attacking game.

With my next pick I take the 2005 ANZAC medallist in Andrew Lovett.

I still strongly believe if St Kilda had shown him the same blind loyalty they showed the Tiprat than they'd have a 2nd flag in their cabinet.

eth-dog
Surprised he lasted this long. Would definitely have been the difference for St Kilda in 2010.

HF: D. Reynolds, B. Caracella, B. Brittingham.

With thanks to Shermy's tagging of me, I shall reveal my next 2 selections.

Don't know if I'm gonna put him in the midfield or on a half forward flank but pick 126 is this player who also happens to be a cousin of Carlton great Gary Crane.

That's Bill Brittingham lads and ladettes.

Pick 127 has me wanting someone loud for the back.

This animal alludes to his nickname.

Alec Epis, welcome aboard.

Les Gardiner

Stolen from https://australianfootball.com/ and sounds like a gun!
+++
Gardiner debuted with the Dons in 1943, winning the club's best first year player award, but he was then forced to miss the entire 1944 season with a spinal injury. He resumed as good as new in 1945, and went on to be a key member of Essendon's premiership teams in 1946, 1949 and 1950. His performance in a back pocket in the 1950 Grand Final defeat of North Melbourne was particularly noteworthy. Always the consummate team man, Gardiner was the recipient in 1951-2-3 - his last three seasons of league football - of Essendon's 'most unselfish player' award.

In true Essendon fashion, I'll grab an undersized rover in the 2X Crichton Medallist, Ernie "Ginger" Cameron Pweter

Bill Hutchinson #10 you can't be serious. Top 3 with Reynolds and Coleman by a mile. His record is second only to King Richard.

Geoff Raines

At Richmond Raines was a premiership player, B&F and All Australian in 1980, also B&F winner in 1978 and 1981, and a 2nd All Australian followed in 1985. Talented, tough and damaging with ball in hand, he adds serious class and grunt. From the australianfootball.com

"When fit, and playing at peak form, there have been few better all round footballers in recent times than Geoff Raines, who was a worthy inclusion in Richmond's official 'Team of the Twentieth Century'."

Averaging over a goal a game and playing some of his footy there, I have no issue moving Des Tuddenham to HFF to make way for Raines to come in as ruck rover.

You’re right...cant speak for others but some chose taller players for structure reasons (wish I had another tall forward/ruck in my side) and others like me chose the best player they had seen who was still on the board.

I think I gotta go Connor McKenna.

184cm, 88kg | half back.

Played 79 games for Essendon between 2015 and 2020, kicking 20 goals.

Possibly the most unique sets of attributes to ever play the game. He was the most Irish of Irish players, blisteringly quick and agile. He could turn on a dime and was the first to bring the solo to the game. Even when the opponent knew it was coming it still worked.

Unlike most Irish we see here, the O'hAilpin brothers excluded, McKenna was a brawler at heart and always seemed to embrace the physical side of the game. Who could forget the 'man bites dog' headline? It helps that he was built like the proverbial but it also makes his agilility all the more remarkable.

He should now be entering his best years as among the best half backs in the league. In 2019 he had started to add real defensive substance to his game. The murmers of him being the best Irishman to play the game should also have started by now but the pull of home was too strong and so he is another player whose prime we missed.
