Neil "Nobby" Clarke

Tenacious, determined back pocket who graduated to roles such as tagging Leigh Matthews in the 84 GF. Much loved dual premiership clubman who sadly took his own life at 45.

John Williams

John Williams (born 17 July 1947) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Collingwood in the VFL. A defender, Williams played his best football in the early 1970s with Essendon. He finished second in the club's 1971 best and fairest awards and was equal third in the 1972 Brownlow Medal count. In 1972 he also represented Victoria at the Perth Carnival and earned All Australian selection.

Bob Syme - Ruckman in 49’ & ‘50 flags

A resolute, pacy, hard hitting ruckman, Bob Syme struggled initially to hold down a regular senior place but once he established himself there were few better. Originally from Moonee Ponds YCW, he made his VFL debut in 1944 and had played 116 games and kicked 60 goals by the time he hung up his boots nine years later. Perhaps his most noteworthy displays both came in grand finals: in 1949 when the Bombers overcame Carlton, and the following year when North Melbourne were put to the sword. He was also among the Dons’ best players in the losing grand finals of 1948 against Melbourne and 1951 against Geelong.

I'll take one Che Cockatoo Collins please.

181 cm, 85kg | small forward / half forward

160 AFL games between 1994 and 2003 for 215 goals. He played 85 games for Essendon kicking 105 goals between 1994 and 1998 and 75 games for Port kicking 106 goals from 1999 to 2003. Wikipedia credits him with another 45 games for Port in SANFL for 62 goals but that is from 1993 so it shouldn't count.

He is probably the forgotten man when it comes to Port stealing gun players from us.

It will be interesting to read the thoughts of other posters as I certainly didnt see Cockatoo Collins play every week in the 90s.

My recollection is that he was more than just a small forward. In reality, he didn't have the work rate that you'd look for in today's game though he did have the burst of speed, the natural forward craft and crumbing ability. He was a beautiful kick who could pull off the mercurial. He was quite powerful. If my memory serves me correctly, we used him out of the goal square almost as a full forward at times as we were searching for key forwards between 1994 and 1997 (i.e. between Salmon and Lloyd/Lucas). He certainly played as forward pocket and half forward when we had key forwards.

In today's terms he would have the physical attributes of a Jamie Elliott or Alex Fasolo with the classic indigenous flair and knack for defying time and gravity.

His record stacks up as that of a genuinely good player. His best years were 1996 when he kicked 37 goals from 24 games culminating in our preliminary final loss to Sydney (he kicked 6 goals in that campaign including 4 in a semi). In 2001 he kicked 41 goals for Port playing 22 games concluding in a semi final loss.

He played in 5 or 6 finals campaigns in his 10 year career losing 3 preliminary finals. The numbers indicate he performed solidly in finals. I don't know what his story is and why he didn't play even more. He's another of those players that I have a real sense of regret thinking he does not have his name on a locker as a 100 game player (in the number 9).

jmoo wan you're up.

Jimmy Sullivan

eth-dog

Sullivan was one of the small players in the Essendon team of the 1920s which earned them the nickname "mosquito fleet". A wingman of considerable pace, he vice captained Essendon in 1923 but was not selected in premiership side that year. He did however become a premiership player the following season in the league's new round robin finals format before finishing his career with a stint at Melbourne.

For my back up ruck I'll take the Russian Mark Jamar who in 2010 was considered the best ruck in the league.

Ill take one of the best lock down taggers of the modern era. From one of the most hated players in the league to lovable scamp:

Ryan “Pinchy” Crowley

BrunoV

Mason Redman for me.

187cm, 87kg | small defender/half back

Sitting on 60 games for Essendon from 2016 to today. He's kicked 8 goals.

One of my favourite on the current list.

He has a great combination of aggression, size, athleticism, running power, skill (absolutely beautiful and penetrating kick), footy smarts and versatility - I think he could play wing, midfield and he grew up playing playing half forward. He's an extremely well rounded player.

The size and athleticism/running power is what makes him look modern but I think, in many ways, he's a throwback to the Sheedy era. He's tough and aggressive, he's a bit mad, really. He could be a back pocket plumber but he's not because he's got the ability to be one of the best running defenders in the game.

He's not there yet. I think, freed up by the presence of Kelly, he's going to really break out in 2022 on the cusp of All Australian selection and that he'll end up as one of the premier medium defenders/half backs in the competition for the next 5 or so years.

Even on his current output I am more than happy to plug him in the back 6 of my team.

Gordon Abbott
Ruck/forward
3 x Premiership player
Two with us 1942 & 1946
133 games (total)

Gordon Abbott was a formidable footballer who could hold down key positions at both ends of the ground. He was also a highly capable ruckman. He was at centre half forward in Geelong’s 1937 VFL premiership side and later played as a ruckman in Essendon’s triumphant 1942 and 1946 combinations.

Pweter

2nd ruck is one lolnorf Syd Barker Sr.

A ruckman, Barker became an integral player in North's illustrious "invincibles" side that won premierships in 1910, 1914, 1915 and 1918. He captained the club in their last two premierships and through a record 58-game unbeaten streak from 1914 to 1919.

In 1921, North disbanded as part of a plan to merge with Essendon and join the VFL in 1922. Barker moved to Essendon's VFL side in mid-1921 in good faith that the merger would go ahead, but it ended up being blocked by the State Government, and Barker was stuck at Essendon. He became captain-coach in 1922 and led the club to back to back premierships in 1923 and 1924 before announcing his retirement.

All lolnorf's aside, anyone that gets a club B&F named after them could obviously play, and success seemed to follow him.

Paddy Shea

Taken from australianfootball.com
+++
After 13 games with Fitzroy in 1904 'Paddy' Shea followed a well-worn path westwards to the West Australian goldfields. He spent the next three seasons playing for Boulder City, carving out a reputation for himself as a cool and canny half forward with excellent goal sense. An early exponent of the 'banana', or 'checkside' punt kick, he was widely regarded as the finest player on the goldfields during his time there.

In 1908, Shea returned to Melbourne where he joined Essendon. He was an important player for the Same Old in 142 games over the next decade, including prominent performances in the 1911-12 Grand Final winning sides. He also spent a brief time back on the goldfields with Railways.

Having just realised I'm almost done with my side, I'll need to be a bit more creative here.

Once again, thanks for the tag Shermy.

My last player in the forward group will be Max Crow.

Plugging the holes on one half back flank will be Elton Plummer.
