I don't give a hoot about the big crowds or the fact that they are two of the biggest clubs in Melbourne. Other clubs should be allowed to play at the MCG on Anzac Day . For example next year I think Carlton-Richmond or even the Bulldogs-Geelong should play on Anzac Day. Essendon and Collingwood won't agree to change though, because like Carlton, they are arrogant money grabbing clubs who don't give a crap about other struggling clubs who could use the Anzac day game to boost their coffers.

Considering they pool all the moneys together(excepting membership)and then share it with all the clubs, Geelong are lucky.
Gee Footscray and Geelong something to stay awake waiting for - NOT

Essendon and Collingwood made the Anzac day tradition - it was never really huge untill a few years ago - if other clubs had any initiative at all, they would pounce on other days such as Mothers Day.
Then again it is normally clubs like Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood who innovate and the other clubs just go with the flow and then wonder why they are financially miserable!!!!

It turns into a bit of a circle, where the richer clubs have the resources to capitalise on opportunities. The poorer clubs may see these opportunities, but are so busy diverting resources to day-to-day issues they cannot seize the opportunity. They miss out on the money and publicity, and so the gap between rich and poor club widens.
Much the same thing can happen in general society.

Other clubs used to play at the MCG on Anzac Day. The Essendon v Collingwood tradition's only been going since 1995.
But the crowds were never anything special until they started scheduling Bombers v Pies games for Anzac Day.

In any case, it's the AFL who does the scheduling, not the clubs.

Geelong4eva,

I don't think Collingwood will make any more from this game than Essendon will form their home game against the Pies in Round 22 later this year. That game in Round 22 could attract 88,000 too !! It's just one game remember. Also, public holiday rates apply, meaning the break-even point for the crowd is higher on Anzac Day.

There are plenty of other public holidays. Quuens Birthday, Easter etc.

Essendon and Collngwood can sell out the MCG on Anzac Day which is what the AFL wants and it is good for Football. I man there is no reason why Geelong can't play the Bulldos over the Road at Colonial on the same day. There is nothing stopping that, is there ?

I think Essendon-Collingwood on Anzac Day is here to stay.

Perhaps it's not fair, but that's life.

I think it stinks that Collingwood & Essendon get to play every year on ANZAC Day. I know that they have been doing so since 1995, but the difference being, that prior to this, more than one game was scheduled in Melbourne on this day. Since these two have been scheduled they have been the only game scheduled to play on this day in Melbourne. Therefore, you are obviously going to get more people if there is only one game playing. I think a game should be played on ANZAC Day, and really believe that it should be the re-match of the previous year's Grand Final..

actually "tooser" geelong boy- from what i read, it was Sheedy's idea to make it an annual thing. He called up the collingwood ceo, and they together went and spoke to Bruce Ruxton of the RSL about it, who loved the idea. Sheedy can take all the credit he wants.
so up yours.
:p

I have read in numerous newsgroups that the reason we have such an uneven draw is because of the amount of teams in the competition. Obviously 16 does not go into 22 very well at all.

However, the reality is that we will NEVER have a fair draw when certain clubs are guaranteed two "blockbuster" matches each year. Apart from the obvious financial benefit, it is blatantly unfair for certain clubs to have the advantage of playing another of these so-called teams twice when they are struggling. ie Collingwood in 1999

In case you may have guessed, this is probably my number pet hate with the AFL.

Absolutely goddam dead-right sainter

If all clubs played each other twice then there would be no arguements about unfair draws. Every club would get to play their particular 'blockbuster' games, all Non-Victorian teams would have to come down and play in Melbourne 10 times every year, all Victorian clubs would have to play Perth and Adelaide twice and Sydney and Brisbane once each - no arguements, no ifs, buts or maybes

A 30 game H&A season is really the only fair and equitable way of solving the problems thrown up by a 22-round season.

Freo are building a tradtion on anzac day with the len hall game. they just need the fan base to make it work. i think they would like it to be against the lions each year.

You're quite right Samsgal. G4e and others are claiming Essendon and Collingwood have the monopoly on Anzac Day, but that's just not correct.
Although for Whiskas and the rest of the boys from Sleepy Hollow, if you want to play on Anzac Day, maybe a trip over the Nullabor would be your best bet.

It doesn't matter if it's fair or not because it isn't too much of a advantage or disadvantage anyway. Besides the game is great for the AFL the crowd was huge and the match was pretty good. Besides it ptomotes interest and livens AFL up a bit.

Despite My dislike for Essendon and Collingwood, you have to give them some credit for turning ANZAC Day into the tradition it has become.

I went to the game in 1995 (the draw) and to this day have never seen a better game.

(I admit, any Geelong Premiership, I would class a better game)

I think they deserve the game. If only ANZAC Day fell on a different date each year so they didn't get to play each other twice, that's the only complaint I have with it.

i think u r dead wrong. the anzac day game is a great tradition and one that i hope continues long into the future.
a game beteewn two of the leagues biggest clubs which draws crowds of 80 000 plus and always provides a good show for all footy fans not just those of essendon and coll'wood whats wrong with that? as its been said b4 its the closest thing you'll get to a grand final without it being a grand final.it wouldnt be the same if it was between two different clubs the atmosphere would be no where near as electric. so wether its fair or not its a big day on the football calender and good on sheeds for making it that way

besides Essendon don't really typify the Anzac spirit do they ? The Bombers are a pack of artifical, arrogant, morally bankrupt yuppies who have never done a hard day's work in their lives.

Bloodstained Angel,

That 30 round season wouldn't be a bad thing to introduce about now! Give those of us struggling a bit of a chance.

Seriously, I agree with you that a 30 round season is the only way to have a fair and equitable draw but whether it is feasible is another question.

If you wanna criticise another club, why don't you actually crticise something in particular instead of your usual mindless barracking ?

Because mindless trolls are not capable of rational thought :)

yeah thanks sainter - it would give us strugglers a few more chances thats for sure !

But yeah - I think it should be seriously looked at because the preasent draw is just so ridiculously unfair.

Example : Carlton have not played a game in Sydney since 1997 figure that one out, under a fair and equitable draw Carlton would have been up here playing a regular H&A game every year, no ifs or buts. Similarly the Swans would have had to make the journey to Princes Park every year, again no ifs or buts.

This is how a full H&A season could look.

1) Season starts last weekened in February and GF day is the Saturday befiore the Melbourne Cup (either late OCT or early Nov)

2) No pre-season comp at all, just a couple of trial games organised on a club by club basis

3)Rounds 11 and 22 to be split rounds to give fatigued and battle weary players two well-deserved mid season breaks.

4)Minor premier to be given much more recognition than at present (more money, better silverware, presentation ceremony)

5) Finals to be MacIntyre final 5 system (more recognition and assistance to the minor premier)

6) Early season games to be played at night, in the twilight hours, in Tasmania, New Zealand and Cairns (the wet season is ok for football)

7) Interchange bench increased from 4 to 6\

I really believe the AFL must take this suggestion seriously because it is hard for people to think of the present system as anything other than a unfair joke.

As Geelong4eva shows us all, mental illness in our society is a true tragedy. Although G4E's strain of "Essendonian Paranoia" is thankfully a rare condition.

You certainly do have "Issues" to resolve as far as the EFC is concerned G4E, I'd personaly suggest some anger management counciling.

Join me (a non crim, non yuppie, who works hard for a living, Bomber supporter) in reaffirming our support for victims of mental illness like G4E. Repeat after me "We love you Geelong4eva".

Thank you all,
Until next time..."STICK IT UP 'EM BOMBERS!"

Essendon supporters are like Man United supporters arrogant dickshits, except that United supporters have reason to be arrogant. Essendons' done nothing since 93 and sheedy roots sheep

GOOD ONE !!!! you wouldn't have been born when Geelong last did something (why does it feel i'm talking to a 10 year old?) does your mummy know what you are doing?
