Does Essendon have too many Marquee games? Good Friday looks like a set fixture on top of country game, Anzac Day and dream time.
Good Friday isn’t really a set fixture til they work out who our opponent is gonna be.

Country game was originally a marquee game between Geelong and ourselves NOT Essendon.

I'm still pissed we lost that marquee game, I mean Sheedy came up with the marquee ANZAC Day game between Essendon and Collingwood just as he came up with the country game, so if we follow logic than the ANZAC Day marquee game should have been given to us.

Like Eddie said “every game Collingwood play is a marquee game” lol!!

Look at the end of the day if your team is winning does not really matter what day you play any team baring north Melbourne, Gold Coast and GWS will draw a crowd. In relation to Good Friday North will have to rely on a winning Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton or Richmond to draw a crowd over 45,000 at marvel. In terms of Good Friday north Melbourne v Carlton is the best teams to play as the royal children’s hospital is boarded between Carlton and North Melbourne. Only problem is that north can only draw 15,000 of their fans and Carlton are a few years away from being a powerhouse. What I would like to see is that Good Friday be played at the mcg between Collingwood v Carlton. Our first match ups guarantee 70,000 at the moment without any public holiday and Carlton being a bottom 4 side. If both Collingwood and Carlton are in finals contention then you will get 85-90,000 guarantee

Yeah, a brisbane lions vs St Kilda would really be a huge blockbuster.. can't believe the AFL hasn't made that one yet...
That’s the thing about marquee games as it stands only Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Carlton (will be better when they win more games)

Have the ability to attract a big enough crowd combined in a relitivly small geographic area

That’s why these teams hold the monopoly on the marquee events of the year

Adelaide, Sydney and West coast do have the members but would need to essentially still play in Melbourne to get the numbers to the game to justify marquee status

If they shared Good Friday between North and Saints/dogs then it could be built into something.

But the AFL and North Melbourne botched it, perhaps deliberately, until they got their preferred match up involving a big team.

I agree. The North v Saints/Dogs should have been given time. It wasn't hugely promoted and many still see it as a religious holiday, or a time to get away. It may have taken a few years to build. It needed to become a tradition for fans of both clubs - what they did on Good Friday - and it would no doubt have grown over five years.

Good Friday will never be a true marque game unless it was played somewhere with more than 50k seats

The country game is cute but isn’t a marquee (I wonder if there will be a petting zoo this year)

The AFL threw us into the Good Friday game to guarantee a crowd after the embarrassing 33k last year...and a terrible game too

ANZAC day and Dreamtime however are probably the two biggest events on the MCG calendar and we’ve done well to build and grow both events. It helps that no matter how bad we are our fans turn up and we’re lucky as bomber fans to be able to attend such events year on year.

One thing the Country Game has actually got is the best pre match entertainment of any game this year. Serious. Essendon vs Geelong reserves on at 11:50am.

The last time I checked Brisbane was a City so started with a capital letter as for getting offended over me saying that the games should be shared around that shows the Me Generation really is the worst yet

You're seriously going to correct grammar then vomit out that grammatical mess? Are you okay?

As for getting offended, at no point was I ever in the slightest. It's just stupid to think you can put any two teams together and try make it a special event. For example, you could put Brisbane v St Kilda on good friday but still no one would care.

You don't even know what generation i'm from, what a truly dumb post.

Carlton only have one marquee match... and people are whinging for it to be taken off them because they are so terrible and the opponents smash them every single time.
