Competitions Essendon Board Mock Draft 2019

No, honestly thought he was worth it. The guy is top 20 on my board.

Pick 27: Sam de Koning

For me the Dogs need three things, a big key defender is one of them because whilst Alex Keath is good, he's also 28 and SDK can fill his shoes in a few years time. With the flexibility of his potential to play forward or ruck as well, it seems too good to pass up here. I like his athleticism and his hands.

Pick 28: Kyasiah Pickett

Pickett fills the second of the three needs, a good small forward who puts on pressure and kicks goals. He's a safer pick than the other player I had in mind but still just as good.

You're up again
Like the picks, didn't love the trade down

I thought McAsey would get picked before 13 so I went with two picks where I thought SDK might slide to and pick up small forward.

He is a wingman/half back. Can play as a pure wingman easily
If Bianco and, say, the player who's still on the board that we discussed last night, available I'm taking the latter every time.

Pick 35 - Collingwood

Jake Riccardi - Werribee Tigers
key Forward - 196cm 90kg

Rumours are Collingwood are big into Riccardi, and he isn't lasting to their next pick at 60-odd so here he goes.
At 19 years old, he is young enough that being a 'VFL' player wont hurt his draft stock. A Fothergill medalist from the VFL who kicked 38 goals in 20 games. Athletic with strong hands, Riccardi is a likely KPF product who I imagine many teams will be interested in starting from around this pick.

For Collingwood, Reid is on his last legs, Cox has played 1.5 good games in 2 years and is 28 anyway, whilst Mihocek is a handy 2nd or 3rd tall option as opposed to a genuine number one KPF.
Riccardi won't step into this team straight away, but a spot opening up is not too far away, and he has already shown he can play against men.

Pick 36: Brock Smith.

Smith is a guy you can rely upon. Whilst he's not the most fleet of foot he's shown that he can shut down medium's and smalls and has a very reliable hoof on his right. I'd make a comparison to former Cat Josh Hunt.

Mitch georgiades- Subiaco

191cm / 81kg

Suffered a badly corked quad (similar to the Jarryd geary injury) in the futures match on grand final day 2018. Constant set backs didn’t allow this kid to get on the park this season. He looked like a 1st round prospect after a strong under age year where he displayed a strong set of hands on the lead/ contested marking and ability up around the contest. He showed recruiters that his nagging quad troubles are in the past with a strong combine where he posted the 4th fasted spring time 2.925 and a 20.8 yoyo. Very impressive for a kid coming off a long term injury. Has a huge amount of upside and could be the steal of the draft.

Pick 31 Essendon

Jay Rantall - GWV Rebels

184cm / 82kg

Still a raw prospect with heaps of upside. Has a huge tank which showed at the combine where he broke the 2km record. Jay excels defensively in the midfield, on one occasion recording 18 tackles in a game during the nab league this year. Comes from an elite basketball background and represented Australia last year in the same team as Luke Jackson. Showed he has more strings to his bow than just an inside bull when he played more or an outside role for vic country during the champs. He’s a goal kicking mid ( 11 goals from 12 nab league games) which I’m sure essendon fans will love. Needs to become a more consistent kick but the right coaching in an afl system he will definitely improve.
I'm quietly hoping this guy is on Dodoro's list. Twomey's article (?) speaks glowingly.

Pick 43 - Geelong

Sam Philp - Northern Knights
Midfielder - 185cm 86kg

Geelong take best player available in Philp for mine and pick up a another cog for their future midfield. Philp is an stoppage specialist with undervalued speed away from the contest. I say undervalued because he should actually use it more than he does. Dominated for the knights this year, regardless of by he fact that he didn't play at the National champs for Metro, which isn't a indictment when you look at the guys who did (I.e Rowell, Anderson, Bianco, Maginess etc).

Will need a bit of development to his body but Geelong can afford that with their current midfield. A future midfield of Philp, Constable, Fogarty, Parfitt, Clark, Narkle is a great succession plan
