I agree, popin, there are plenty of ways to commemorate ANZAC Day. But you don't belong to the only family that needs to commemorate lives lost or sacrifices made. We all do it in our own way.

The ANZAC day game has always been an excuse to catch up with my Uncle, a talented footballer who missed out on making his mark at Collingwood because his life was permanently disjointed by the Vietnam war. It was also a time to remember my Grandfather, who fought in New Guinea but returned to Alphington to spawn his own army of Collingwood supporters.

Sadly we lost my Uncle just before the start of the 2010 season. He was a ruckman, so that first centre bounce that follows the minutes silence will always be infused with an exhilarating mix of joy, sadness and raw emotion.

As much as I despise Hird, he and the administrators of the Essendon Football Club don't come into the equation.
