That truly is gobsmacking considering they were unbeaten until a few weeks ago.
To be fair if you look only at their Melbourne home games they slot in above Carlton.

Can someone who doesn't have an exam coming up, Fly (?) work out a table of crowds as a percentage of the stadiums capacity. If not, I'll do it next week, but that might show it better?

I can do a quick average attendance now for Essendon, but a full spreadsheet would be more Fly's go.

Round 1 vs GC: 65% of capacity
Round 2 vs Melbourne: 50%
Round 3 vs Port Adelaide: 89%
Round 4 vs Geelong: 43%
Round 5 vs Collingwood: 85%
Round 6 vs Carlton: 44%
Round 7 vs Sydney: 68%
Round 8 vs North Melbourne: 57%
Round 9 vs St. Kilda: 54%
Round 10 vs Richmond: 57%
Round 11 vs Fremantle: 72%

Total so far: 60%

People still have to turn up, regardless of the stadium. Great effort.

Hawthorn's 14k back in 2004...which stadium was that at again?
York Park, which they still filled to, wait for it, 69%

Would you argue that with evidence to back you up?
Its up 4.9-ish% since the send them to Gold Coast push so maybe significant improvement is pushing it.

Improved none the less.

My question would be more wtf happened to Carlton.

Wikipedia, I know, but it says that Hawthorn's home game (at the MCG) against the eventual premiers of that 2004 season (Port) was a whopping 11,682 people.

I would seriously like to know the last time Essendon had a Melbourne-based game with a crowd lower than that. I'm guessing a couple of decades back when we still played a few games at Princes Park?

Richmond and Pies not really travelling much better than us so a solid effort from the filthy dogs that follow those sides too.

I believe the last time we had a crowd below 20k against a fellow Victorian side was against poor old Fitzroy at PP in their death year of 1996- crowd of 12,748.

Or in fact the last time we had a crowd below 20k against anyone in Melbourne.

I can have a go at it, but I'm not sure how much information is available to work with - anyone know of a reliable website that would have information about stadium capacities and crowd numbers for all games?

If I can get all the raw information for capacities and crowd numbers then I can do a few different things with averages per club/venue/round/home vs. away.
