But what does 'pretty good' mean?
10-12th?
8th-10th?
Top 8?

'Pretty good' with the apparent trajectory of being very good in the next 1-2 years? 2-3 years?

Being 'pretty good' is almost the worst place to be if the pieces aren't already in place to become very good.

I don't think Essendon have the pieces in place to be very good.
10th-12th. Maybe a year where they'll push to 8th, maybe the next year they'll slip to 13th. That's their current talent profile unless the kids turnout to be amazing or terrible.

If a top shelf mid gets numbers like that - their team usually wins.

Not sure that’s true. Cripps and Daicos were the two highest Brownlow vote getters and both players teams missed the 8 last season.

It’s a team game and any team is only as good as their fringe players and list bottlenecks allow you to be as that’s what other clubs take advantage of.

one player can’t beat 18 by themselves

Edit: I’ve been informed that Carlton did make the 8 last year. I just didn’t remember them having an impact on the finals

Carlton did play finals last year.
True, their finals campaign was over about five minutes into the game, but they did get the chance to completely embarrass themselves in a final.

Playing the kids. We had a younger average age than Richmond. On the build, have two first round picks this year.

We were okay for periods, unlike Richmond we didn’t get to play Carlton so had a tougher task.
holy ****ing shit you're right

And we had 6 games more than the Tigers to.. that's crazy

NOTE: even the rebuilding Kangas had a more experienced team yesterday

I thought they were good, if the game went for another quarter I think they would have came over the top. They need to work on making the most of their inside 50s and a what to do when the opposition is on top.

The game was really lost in the 1st quarter when they had no answers, was also won in the 4th when we did just enough to answer back each time they got on a roll.

If they can manage to correct that they will win enough games this year to be their abouts.

Reckon the first quarter jump had a lot to do with Hawks being able to blow the cobwebs off last week

Pretty clear the club embarked on a rebuild at the end of last year.

They can’t say it as people would lose their shit at “rebuilding” after 20 years of being rubbish. But it is what it is, and it is required.

Caddy and Reid were our key planks on Friday. They’ve played 11 and 10 games.

when I looked deeper, it blew my mind that we had 17/23 with less than 100 games

There is sometimes a bit in this but I think in this case its a bit of a stretch because Essendon started the game better...

They scored the first goal (and behind) and Hawthorn didn't score until the 12th minute

Yeah I agree but on the flip side, the shift in momentum for the next 3 quarters could have bit to do with getting a week to plan after having a look at how we go about it. Think there's pros and cons both sides but its an entirely avoidable quirk in the fixture that should be fixed.

Have two first rounders this year and st kildas second is looking like an early 20s as well.

Draper is another first rounder if we let him walk, which we should but we won't.

Should be going after the next Witts or Meek not keeping an inconsistent player who does Hollywood plays on big money for 6 years.

I thought they showed a fair bit of promise this week. Against the premiership favourite who has opened the season already in top form.

Yep, lost to the current flag favs by 26 points while having the youngest team of the round

versus

Carlton losing to a team tipped to not even win a game after being up by 41 points
Top 4 contender Fremantle losing to another Top 4 contender in Geelong by 78 points
Swans only lost by 4 to last years winners (who had a very interrupted preparation) but are now 0-2 after two home games and now go to play a dockers side that will be better than this week... can easily be 0-3.
Port crumbled against the Magpies again by 91 points
North Melbourne need another 10 top ten picks to beat the bulldogs vfl side.
Saints smacked by 63 points.

i'll take this loss over the asskicking the Magpies got by the giants last week as well....

Actually thought they played well on Friday. Just beat by a better side who were able to keep them away at arms length but weren't blown away or embarrassed.

They play like a solid Brad Scott side, although IMO this current Essendon list has worse cattle than the North list had so we'll see how they go.

I can see them finishing anywhere from 8th-12th this season.

I agree with him. He's a quality player, but he's not a rip the throat out of the opposition type. Martin, Dangerfield, Petracca, Bontempelli, Daicos level players is what is required.
Or Harley Reid perhaps?

Bombers were pretty good Friday night. A year or 2 more of development plus Reid minus Dodoro and anything’s possible.

Would be nice but who knows. Great if he manifests if not two first and second rounders in Rosas hands will be good anyway. Rosa has a better grasp of what is required.

I think there is a good chance that a bunch of the kids we’ve taken last year will be getting games soon. Zac Johnson, Clarke, SEH, Wicks all offer so much more in the way of skill and balance than some of the remaining senior players.

We'd be lucky if we have 5 players on our list with high footy IQ.
We were lucky we scrounged enough goals from rubbish play to make the scoreboard look respectable.
