Roast Essendon in no mans land

You quite literally had Sheedy on your board.
I think part of that is the nuffy name recognition factor that you see everywhere - i.e. past players always get on over some anonymous business person.

But I don't really see how anyone can look at EFC and not see a factional shitshow at the **** factory. Hopefully it's starting to improve now but I'm at the point where I'll believe it when I see it

Your coteries still exist.

they will always exist.

the key is to not let them exert control over everything.

its a problem we will always have to deal with unfortunatley.

Are we now too shit to be in no mans land? I hope so

You can describe Essendon as many things but right now, you can’t say they’re in no mans land.

They’re putting out the youngest and most inexperienced side in the league each week.

The key planks at either end have played 12 games (Reid) and 13 games (Caddy). The first ruck (Bryan) has played 22 games.

They’ve played three games this season and had four debutants.

Of course things can change, but it’s pretty clear where Essendon is at right now.

Agree. I haven't read through this thread and it's probably already been answered but was that the view of supporters going into this season? That it was a rebuild? Nothing wrong with it. Just wondering if the supporters understood where things were at?

Not to the level of Richmond fans I guess but the writing was on the wall for anyone paying attention

I have asked before but never really been told why, but seriously, why did Dodoro stick around so long? How was that even possible? He was not good, had a bad rep with other clubs and to my knowledge never landed a big recruit who did anything good... Bombers fans please help me understand this.

He’d give club info to the people with money who pay the bills and tell dirty jokes.

They liked him and kept him around

Slimy greasy fella had friends in high places threw others to the bus

You will find with clubs like Essendon and the Blues from history had people in high positions that were only there to build up there own portfolio away from footy Business etc rather then a focus on football Dodo was one of those fellas

I think it was eth-dog just answered this on our boar,d literally this morning

essentially he came from the ground up before it became a full time role. when it moved more professional he was able to sell his (lack of) achievements and keep his job. Then when it came push to shove, was able to sell he was best man for the job when no one else was able to..

or something like that

I guess it depends who is paying attention (so not many)

The main reason is that the club was very insular for a period of 20 years and he was part of the guard.
But also he was given unreasonable leeway because the club blamed its failures on outside causes.
You still see it a lot, people will blame Dodo for all our problems but will also firmly believe our list was good enough and would've won a flag around 2013-14-15 if not for the supplements saga.

so mate of the cotories basically? Surely the Essendon cotories want to win games lol...
They cut costs in fundamental departments within the club E.G the VFL program

To sell a belief that we could win while cutting costs at the club as much as possible is all they care about Club was ran like a cooperate business

A bit harsh to say Essendon's in "no mans land". If they kept doing the same thing for the last 20 years, then yes - but there has been self reflection at the club on the need for change. As much as I don't rate Brad Scott as a match day coach, he has helped from the time he had his interview and basically said that a rebuild is necessary.

Dodoro is gone, there's investment in the draft, and a willingness to change culture in getting rid of players like Jake Stringer. It's OK to go backwards onfield, as long as there's the willingness to ride out the tough times. (You also don't want to cut too deep and get rid of all the experienced players, and end up like North has for 10 years - so it's ok to keep playing Dylan Shiel and those type, even if they aren't going to be part of the future success - they can help protect some of the heat the young players get.)

A former Essendon employee who joined a few years ago said that he couldn't believe how bad the club was after he was there for about a week, compared to his previous club, and that he knew he'd made a mistake. That sums up where Essendon was. Things are changing, but it does take time, and you need luck with the draft. But having a stable off-field structure is essential.

So he’d be perfect as a Director of an ASX 200 company then ?.

Essendons coterie groups still would a lot of power. There are 2 players i know of that are getting a game because the coterie groups threatened to pull funding if they didn't play.

These same groups continually campaign for the likes of hird.

The club is stuck in the 80s

Why would these groups care about individual players getting or not getting a game ?. Is it because they are family members ?.

This is fascinating.

Coteries sponsor players to feel part of the team. They get access to these players almost like you would get access to your best mate.
When your investment (for some it's a minimum of 20k per year) begins to lose its appeal, you either withdraw your funding, reinvest, or advocate (fight)

What does the club care if these groups sponsor players ?. Does the money go to the club ?.

Sounds like they should scrap the whole scheme if it’s holding back the club

Interestingly I heard Jenkins on the radio on Sunday talking about the Bombers and how they could structure themselves to have 3 top 10 picks in this years draft. This includes:

  1. your own pick (which quite possibly will be a high pick)
  2. Melbourne's pick (I think it was Demons...traded at last years draft and which quite possibly will be a high pick)
  3. Trade out Darcy for a top 10 pick

If the Bombers go down this path, that's one heck of a handy haul.

What do you think Bomber supporters?

Darcy as in Parish? No one is giving up a top 10 pick for him
