if dodoro was in charge, that trade swap would've been treated as a master stroke, alas, rosa was criticised for the action.

playing 2 steps ahead.
no really one washed up desperado sought attention by being the odd man out (and criticised the trade)

for the most part, it was seen as decent business.

Rubber stamping it when you see we ended up with
1 x 2024 first rounder (Isaac Kako),
2 x 2024 second rounders (Kayle Gerryn, #37, Angus Clarke #39)

2 x 2025 first rounders (Melbourne 1st, Essendon 1st)
2 x 2025 second rounders (Essendon 2nd, St.Kilda 2nd)

add in that we have two NGA kids looking increasingly likely to go between 20 - rookie drafting, we could absolutely leg up off the back of that trade

i was shitposting, i recall being a bit confused until someone explained that we'd need it to match an earl(ier) bid on kako when the trade happened.

WalshistheGOAT the win on Saturday night was not because Merret had 37 touches, or because Draper dominated the ruck battle, or Ridley took a customary 9 marks. Shiel having 30 in a turn the clock back performance.

IT was because 40 gamer Jye Menzie kicked 4 goals. Because 9 gamer (and he should be leafing the rising star voting right now) Archie Roberts controlled things across half back with 28 touches. injury prone but returning to fitness Zac Reid playing his best game for the club. Dont forget more responsibility being placed onto the shoulders of 51 gamer Ben Hobbs.

I know it was only Melbourne who are 0 - 5, but to have these kids steering the ship was a huge step forward. A very team and well balanced team

(edit. Starting writing a post but then accidentally replied to the other comment. Sorry, will delete)

What always baffled me is that the 2000-2001 side never kicked on to become.....if not a "Dynasty" then at least a consistent contender for many years.

That 2000 Premiership team was NOT an old side. It had only a handful of blokes from 28 and older, and the bulk of the team was early to mid 20s. They should have been set up for extended success.
Brisbane and Fitzroy merged to make a super team. No team in history has the level of talent that Brisbane team had. That's why that side underperformed.

Brisbane and Fitzroy did not merge.
Oh right.

The merger between Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears, now known as the Brisbane Lions, occurred in 1996 due to severe financial difficulties faced by the Fitzroy Football Club. The struggling Fitzroy club sought a merger to survive, and Brisbane Bears ultimately took over Fitzroy's AFL operations. This was a unique event in AFL history, as it marked the first time two teams had merged in the league.

That doesn't really explain why Essendon completely fell away as a contender, though.

Brisbane may have been an awesome team, but with a relatively young and utterly dominant team, you'd have thought the Bombers would at least be sticking around at the pointy end for a long time.

Brisbane mentally broke Essendon. They fired Sheedy and never recovered. Takes a lot to restore winning culture once you've lost it. I remember Essendon being absolutely brutal.

Not going anywhere fast. Finals sides would be putting 6-8 goal wins up against the Eagles.
Brisbane only beat them by 3-4 goals....
We have also been very open about the fact that we are rebuilding. Also we have 2nd youngest side this week apart from West Coast.... Wtf are u talking about finals for.

Salary cap pressure lost them a couple of players after 2001 but the 2000 'best. team. everrr' wasn't old at all.

Lloyd, Lucas, Hird, Jason Johnson, Fletcher, Misiti, Wellman etc. were all 27 or under.

Draper and Bryan out long term in successive weeks is a massive blow

Do we have a diagnosis on Draper? Looks like he was told to keep playing….then some lower leg injury happens.

Isn’t he OOC? Could be an interesting time if he doesn’t get the contract offers because of this.

UFA end of year. Looked like a textbook achilles which is 12 months out. I had a minor tear in mine when I was young and it was awful, couldn't imagine doing the full snap.

Essendon are fielding a pretty young team but the list profile is confusing. Other than Dylan Shiel who is OOC who is an obvious senior player you would not expect to line up in Rd 1 2026?

Not having Parish, Langford and now Draper is not by design. Two Metre Peter was out injured then came back in tonight and was BOG.

we need to send every physio we have over to goldys house to get him ready.

no other team i am aware of has had their 2 main Ruckman go down in the same season with season ending injuries.

just brutal

Yep, horrible luck. For a couple of games it wouldn't be too bad but 12 month injuries is just shocking stuff. Have to imagine they'll attack the MSD to target a couple of back ups.

yeah, goldy will have to rotate with someone until the MSD until we can sort it out.

problem is there's like ****in 20 rounds left.

pretty ****ed situation.

at least some kid out there is going to get his shot at the big time.

Mercuri's form fell off a cliff as well.... so was like being 4 players down when you add Heffernan, Blumfield and Caracella moving on and the ins were nowhere near good enough.

recruiting was awful and sheedys coaching starting to fall off too.

Wright wasn’t injured. We choose the Bryan/Draper set up last year and he wasnt part of the structure only came in because Bryan was injured. Did well though.
