Roast Essendon in no mans land

Yep, horrible luck. For a couple of games it wouldn't be too bad but 12 month injuries is just shocking stuff. Have to imagine they'll attack the MSD to target a couple of back ups.
We have 2 alongside Goldy in the 2s already. Not sure the MSD would find us any better option. Just throw what we've already got in.

we need to send every physio we have over to goldys house to get him ready.

no other team i am aware of has had their 2 main Ruckman go down in the same season with season ending injuries.

just brutal
Going back a while but in 1997 St Kilda lost their number two ruckman Lazar Vidovic not long before the finals and then lost number one ruckman Peter Everitt in the first final.

It’s easy to read into what last nights game means for Essendon but it’s also disrespectful to west coast. Their pressure in the first quarter cut our game plan up and they scored well on the rebound. Plenty of good young kids coming through for them, liked the look of Hough, Hewett and Williams.

As others have said, we are likely to be anywhere from 10th to 16th and will have down patches a plenty this year. I’m happy if the down patches still result in a win or even competitive losses and we Keep blooding our youngsters etc.

I'm always a fan of seeing Essendon lose but a win is a win, you take it.

St Kilda's last two efforts in 2023 and 2024 vs West Coast in Perth have been very close games that we somehow fell over the line in as well. Not ideal, but you take it.

Draper out is devastating... at least you have Goldstein on the list and hopefully you can grab someone in the midseason draft.

Every "worst since Fitzroy" team since, errr, Fitzroy won the odd game here and there. 2023 we lost 5 games by 100+ and 3 by less than 10. Wouldn't read any more into Essendon beating WC than Carlton last week.

It's curious that in our last 4 seasons of shitness Essendon have managed to lose to WC and win 3 games by under 10 points but doesn't actually mean anything. Adelaide go in dry when they play us and have been just as mediocre. If you win 14-15+ games it doesn't really matter how much you beat WC by, ask Brisbane.

Wright always kicks a bag on us even did it when we had barass. I wouldn't read that much into it.

It’s funny this is the first time since when Knights was coach where I’m more concerned about the coach of the club than the direction of the club.

So I guess the title of the thread has been correct for 15 years

The title of this thread is completely fair given our last two decades but I’m okay with the trajectory of everything now that Rosa is in charge of list management.

I’m not, but Essendon need to nail the next two drafts and the rise could be swift.

The club is in an envious position draft wise. Over the last two years the club has drafted Caddy, Kako and Roberts. All three look like 200+ game players for the club. Alongside Day-Wicks and Johnson, who are getting praised in the VFL.

This year, they have maybe two Top 10 picks within the draft along with two second rounders. Add to this, the club has two NGA players who are touted to be Top 20 picks.

In 2027, a draft that will be extremely compromised, the club has access to Bewick and Rodan if he nominates as an NGA.

It is the next few drafts that could shape the club for the next 15 years. And I have far, far more trust in Rosa getting the job done and shaping the list than I would if Dodoro was still around.

Probably not this early in the season. It's pretty brutal.

Round 16 onwards 2019 we had to play A. Aliir in the ruck because Naismith, Sinclair and McLean were all cooked..

Plus Waterman copped it mid week in the media so was always likely to respond, and just because he’s in a crap team doesn’t mean he isn’t an absolute beast.

Feel like they’ve gone forwards in some areas of the ground in the past 3 wins, but backwards in terms of progression.

Reid has found some confidence down back, a massive plus that he’s showing something resembling his best.

Roberts has had a breakout month really.

But Setterfield & Shiel to the midfield I’m not a huge fan of tbh. Gets a couple of wins on the board but would like to see Durham, Hobbs & Tsatas get the keys. Thought Tsatas played really well the game he broke his finger in & feel like he should have been let loose.

Obviously things like playing Goldy now are unavoidable, but I think they’re going to finish mid table with Shiel & Setterfield in the middle.

Maybe that’s alright when getting the Dees 1st rounder but is it gonna fast track Tsatas & Hobbs?

These two just aren't good enough.

Wright was huge though & seems obvious to keep playing him to help Caddy out. Caddy got a very tough role with no Langford, Stringer & Wtight to start the year & only having the 2nd ruck as the tall forward - so I feel like Caddy can get some confidence going now

Very harsh on Tsatas in particular who didn’t come into the league as a ready made player.

Was match leader for clearances v Crows, broke a finger, hasn’t played since.

Might be some issues with spread & out of stoppage work (like many inside mids - Crouch, Phillips, Brodie, Setterfield etc) but I don’t feel like he’s had a chance to showcase improvement either.

If they don’t let him kick he should be absolutely fine.

Brisbane and Fitzroy merged to make a super team. No team in history has the level of talent that Brisbane team had. That's why that side underperformed.

Wasn't Chris Johnson the only one of the 8 Fitzroy players picked up in 1996 who was still around for the Brisbane threepeat?

Main board the same as dons board in criminally underrating Setterfield and thinking he is way older than he is.

He is 27 and had a career plagued by injuries. His best footy is awesome and his big body laying tackles, blocks and taking hits is very important at the moment.

Lots of talk about how Richmond, West Coast and North are all rebuilding and that they're showing good signs. Essendon have fielded a younger team every week and are 3-2 with a game in hand. Yet when they lose, they don't get the 'well they're young' excuse that the others do. Nobody expects Essendon to top 8. Regardless of how the wins have come, or who against; winning is a good thing.

easier to hang shit on a club that never truly bottomed out. finishing 8th and lower isn’t exactly a sign of rebuilding in the grand scheme of things

Second youngest team this week, even younger than Richmond.

If anyone is in no man's land it's Gold Coast. You guys have owned the most real estate in "no man's land" for 15 years.

Port Adelaide have been playing infield a team with an age profile basically the same as Essendon. Fremantle quite a bit younger as well.

Essendon are like Carlton. They can’t go up and they keep pretending they’re not down. No mans land.
